A Rhode Island high school hockey team won the state championship just weeks after a deadly shooting at a local rink.

The February shooting at a hockey arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, left three people dead, plus the gunman.

The three people killed were all related to Colin Dorgan, a high school senior who is a member of the Blackstone Valley team that beat Lincoln 3-2 in quadruple overtime in the Division 2 state championship game on Wednesday, March 18.

“I truly felt it in my heart and my soul that they’re still with me,” Dorgan told the media after the game. “I love them so much, and they’re still here and I know it.”

Dorgan tied the game late, before his team prevailed in the fourth overtime.

Good morning! Happy Wednesday! We’ll see the humidity rising through the day and it will be very humid for the next couple of days. We do have some shower chances ahead, but most of the next few days will be dry.

Dew points will rise into the 60s today…especially this afternoon. Tomorrow, with dew points in the 70s, it’ll be very humid (and the weather looks hot for Thursday, too). The dew points and thus the humidity will drop into the weekend.

Rhode Island energy assistance program extends deadline amid surge in demand

An energy assistance program designed to help Rhode Islanders struggling to pay utility bills has extended its application deadline amid rising demand for financial assistance.

The United Way of Rhode Island announced that residents now have until June 30 to apply for aid through the Good Neighbor Energy Fund.

The program provides one-time emergency utility assistance to income-eligible households that need help paying a bill or avoiding a service shutoff but do not qualify for other state or federal assistance programs.

Demand for help has increased sharply.
