Sen. JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential candidate, on Wednesday attempted to confront Vice President Kamala Harris after the two converged on the same Wisconsin airport at the same time.

“I just wanted to check out my future plane,” Vance, R-Ohio, told reporters traveling with him after walking towards Air Force Two. “But I also wanted to go say hello to the Vice President and ask her …why does she refuse to answer questions from the media?”

Vance and Harris were both in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, for dueling events.

Harris, and her newly minted running mate Gov. Tim Walz, held an outdoor rally where hundreds of supporters lined up for hours to see the Democratic duo. Vance spoke at Wollard International, an aviation equipment manufacturer, to an intimate crowd, where he also took questions.

Although he walked towards Air Force Two, Vance said he did not speak or see Harris. Harris’ motorcade drove away as Vance walked over.

He took a jab at Harris, who is currently on a campaign swing to key battleground states after announcing Walz as her vice presidential pick, for “just giving another scripted speech.”

“I don’t think the Vice President waved at me as she drove away, but I’m glad to have done it,” Vance said.

Both Vance and Harris referenced the tarmac two-step on social media.

Vance on X, formerly Twitter, posted a photo of himself and members of his team walking away from Air Force Two. He captioned it: “This Entourage reboot is going to be awesome.”

The Harris campaign posted a video of Harris greeting young girls on the tarmac before panning to Vance’s plane taxiing on the tarmac.

The campaign used a viral audio clip of Dance Mom’s Abby Lee Miller saying: “And now I want to sit back and relax, and enjoy my evening. When all of a sudden, I hear this agitating, grating voice.” The sound is often used to depict an annoying interruption.

US presidential hopeful Kamala Harris and her newly-announced running mate Tim Walz will campaign in the key battleground states of Michigan and Wisconsin on Wednesday.

The pair will stop in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and Detroit, Michigan, a day after they kicked off their joint campaign in Pennsylvania.

The two states are part of the “Blue Wall” that Democrats will need to win to elect Harris to the White House.

Wisconsin and Michigan will also be an early test for the Midwestern credentials of Walz, who served as the governor of nearby Minnesota.

Trump calls Walz a ‘shocking pick’

Earlier on Wednesday, Republican nominee Donald Trump slammed Harris and Walz in an interview on the breakfast TV show “Fox & Friends.”

Trump called Walz a “shocking pick” and sought to paint him as a radical progressive sidekick for Harris.

“He’s a smarter version of her,” Trump said.

Trump also said he was keen to debate Harris, after he said he would skip a scheduled debate on broadcaster ABC with the Democratic nominee after US President Joe Biden pulled out of the race.

Trump has instead called for a debate with Harris on the conservative-friendly Fox network with a live audience.  

“I hear she’s sort of a nasty person but not a good, good debater. But we’ll see because we’ll be debating her, I guess in the pretty near future. It’s going to be announced fairly soon but we’ll be debating her,” Trump said.

Trump previously said he would prefer to debate Harris on Fox, which is perceived as being friendlier to him, but also said that “every network loves me very much right now.”

Comedian Nicole Byer recalled a “scary” incident with a racist hecklers at a past show in Wisconsin.

“I did shows in Appleton, Wisconsin, which I talk about in my special, and I really hated it there,” Byer said during an appearance on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Aug. 6 episode of his Dinner’s on Me podcast. “The vibes fucking sucked. Bad vibes”

She continued, “During my show, I had a white host, a Black feature, and the crowds were so unruly, and at one point, my Black featurer was on stage…. A guy in the crowd was like, ‘Smile, we can’t see you.’ I was like, ‘What the fuck?’”

Byer said she then “walked out on the floor” and asked a server, “You’re not going to say anything?” and the employee responded, “What?”

“I was like, ‘Oh my God,’” the Nailed It! host said. After the event concluded, she refused to do meet-and-greets, despite the fact they had been sold with the tickets. “I told my agent, ‘I’m just not meeting these people. I’m sure that there’s nice people in this crowd, but overall garbage. Bad people, bad vibes.’ I couldn’t believe that man said that.”

The comedian went on to say the worst part of the experience was that there were “no repercussions.”

“It just blew my mind,” she said, adding that it made the event feel “scary.” She later learned from a friend about Appleton’s history as a “sundown town,” a term which refers to cities that enforced anti-Black segregation even after segregationist laws were overturned.

The experience and subsequent revelation left her with the conviction that “I will never go back to Appleton, Wisconsin.”
