Wisconsin DNR ending sturgeon guards on Wolf River

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The state Division of Pure Sources is ending its follow of posting volunteer guards alongside the Wolf River to guard spawning sturgeon from poachers.

WLUK-TV reported Wednesday that Sturgeon for Tomorrow has been posting guards alongside the river across the clock every spring for many years in coordination with the DNR to guard the fish.

DNR Regional Conservation Warden Ben Treml says there’s been no main complaints or poaching instances for a minimum of 15 years and coordinating the volunteers is numerous work and it’s exhausting to search out individuals prepared to work in a single day. He added that no volunteers have patrolled the river for the final two years throughout the pandemic.

Jim Patt is the president of the southwest chapter of Sturgeon for Tomorrow. He says he’s not proud of the DNR’s determination. Nobody is aware of how a lot poaching is basically happening, he stated, and if phrase will get round that the guards aren’t on the river any extra poaching may improve.

Columbia Co. Sheriff’s Office Dive Team searching for missing man

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Wis. (WMTV) – The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday night they are searching for a 63-year-old man that went underwater in Lake Wisconsin on the Wisconsin River.

Officials said numerous 911 calls came into the county’s dispatch center around 2 p.m. reporting a person that had gone underwater and not resurfaced.

Many area residents began searching for the man in their personal boats until CCSO’s Dive Team arrived and began searching, officials said.

Authorities were unable to find the man and called of the search for the night due to the darkness. The search will resume Sunday morning.

The area north of Tipperary Point is under an emergency slow-no-wake order. The Sheriff’s Office added it is vital that boaters abide by that order to keep divers safe and search efforts unhindered.
