MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee has acquired veteran right-hander Aaron Civale from the Tampa Bay Rays in the NL Central-leading Brewers’ latest attempt to boost a starting rotation that’s been decimated by injuries.

The Brewers are sending minor league infielder Gregory Barrios to Tampa Bay in exchange for Civale. They designated right-hander Taylor Clarke for assignment to make room for Civale on the 40-man roster.

Civale, 29, has gone 2-6 with a 5.07 ERA in 17 starts this season. He has struck out 84 and walked 27 in 87 innings. Civale has a 3.82 ERA over his last seven outings.

He fared better last year, going 7-5 with a 3.46 ERA in 23 combined starts for Cleveland and Tampa Bay.

Civale owns a 33-32 record with a 4.10 ERA in 103 career starts. He will be arbitration eligible after the season and is under club control through 2025.

Barrios, 20, was batting .325 with a .367 on-base percentage, one homer, 34 RBIs and 18 steals in 61 games for the Brewers’ Single-A Wisconsin affiliate.

This move comes eight days after the Brewers acquired left-hander Dallas Keuchel from the Seattle Mariners. Keuchel, the 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner, has gone 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in two starts with the Brewers.

Milwaukee owns a six-game lead in the NL Central despite getting just 406 total innings from its starting pitchers, the second-lowest total of any major league team. The San Francisco Giants have gotten 402 innings from their starting pitchers.

Fifteen different pitchers have started games for the Brewers this season, which represents the highest number for any MLB team.

Milwaukee traded 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles before the season and knew going into the year that two-time All-Star Brandon Woodruff wouldn’t pitch at all in 2024 while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.

Wade Miley and Robert Gasser have undergone Tommy John surgery and will miss the rest of the season. Other Brewers pitchers on the injured list include starters Joe Ross (lower back) and DL Hall (left knee), two-time All-Star closer Devin Williams (back) and relievers Jared Koenig (left forearm) and JB Bukauskas (right lat).

The 2024 NBA Draft has come and gone, free agency has just begun and the Milwaukee Bucks have made just a few small tweaks to their roster thus far.

In addition to adding Delon Wright in free agency, the Bucks have added three players. AJ Johnson and Tyler Smith were taken in the first and second rounds of the draft, respectively, and Stanley Umude signed free agency on a two-way deal.

So, how many 25 and under players do the Milwaukee Bucks have and what is their potential level?

The Milwaukee Bucks, including two-way players, have nine players who are 25 or younger, starting with the previously mentioned Umude, who is 25.

Stanley Umude joins Ryan Rollins and Jaylin Galloway as the two other players on two-way contracts for the Bucks. For the sake of looking at potential, the two-way guys will be the first three discussed, and then we’ll count down the rest.

Stanley Umude played in 24 games for the Detroit Pistons in 2023-24 for an average of about 13 minutes per game. In those games, he averaged 5.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and less that one of everything else. However, his shooting could give some folks cause for optimism, as he shot 44 percent on field goals, 45.3 percent on 3-pointers and a low 58.3 percent on free throws.

The other interesting part of Umude is his build. Umude is a very intriguing size, standing at 6-foot-6 with a 6-foot-10 wingspan, so he’s definitely got the length to play good weak-side defense to pick off passes wherever he stands.

The Milwaukee Bucks grabbed a couple of other players to put on two-way contracts last season in Ryan Rollins and Jaylin Galloway. Rollins was definitely the more impressive of the two, and the playing time and numbers reflect that.

Jaylin Galloway was brought to the Bucks at the beginning of March and played just seven games for the Wisconsin Herd for about 20 minutes per game. In that decent chunk of time, Galloway scored just 4.7 points per game, grabbed just 3.4 rebounds per game, had 1.4 assists, 1.1 turnovers and 1.3 blocks per game.

Galloway had some rough shooting numbers also, tallying 40.6 percent from the field, just 14.3 percent from the 3-point line and 66.7 percent from the free throw line.

Ryan Rollins, however, showed out much more effectively in his 29.5 minutes per game for the Herd. Rollins averaged 16.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.5 turnovers and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 42.8 percent from the field, 39.7 percent from the 3-point line and 68.8 percent from the free throw line.

So, of the three two-way players the Milwaukee Bucks have, Stanley Umude has the most potential, followed by Ryan Rollins and Jaylin Galloway.

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport will have thousands of first-time visitors walking through its terminals as they arrive for the 2024 Republican National Convention.

They will arrive by plane load, from California to the Carolinas, on jet airliners and private planes. The airport is the first chance Milwaukee will have to impress.

“It’s very important to us,” airport director Brian Dranzik said. “We want to showcase the airport as the first impression for people coming in from where they’re coming in”

Dranzik has now prepared for two national political conventions.

“We’ve been very thoughtful over the past couple of years of what this experience is going to be like for people,” he said. “We were prepping like this for the DNC in 2020.”

This time, though, people are really coming. And the airport will be ready in ways we can and cannot see.

“One of the things we did a few weeks ago is recapped the entire terminal space, which took about a week and a half to complete,” he said. “Also things like runway safety, making sure the airfield is in good condition. We’re going to suspend some of our work activity. Work will conclude before the even and start up again.”

In terms of air traffic volume, the RNC will make Milwaukee’s airport just a tad busier than it would be during a normal spring break week. It’s more than equipped to handle commercial traffic.

A bigger challenge is handling the scores of private planes coming to Milwaukee, sometimes on short notice. 

“We’re trying to get information from them as to what that private air traffic looks like, but the problem with that is that they don’t have to notify us until 24 hours before they arrive, but they’ll be shutting down two runways,” Dranzik said.

The signage is already up, reminding visitors about the event. A Dunkin’ Donuts will be open just in time to greet them.

Perhaps the first test of readiness will be how things go at baggage claim.

“That’s our conversation with the airlines because they’re the ones pulling the bags off and making sure they’re getting back to the causal system,” Dranzik said. “I’m not expecting too may issues that way.”

To learn more on how to handle the mass departures on the two days following the convention, Mitchell officials reached out to the airport in Louisville which handles such crowds each year on the day after the Kentucky Derby. 

It’s all hands on deck until the last plane leaves, and the two days following the convention will be the busiest.

“When people are leaving, that’s equivalent to a Super Bowl scenario,” Dranzik said. “Everyone’s gonna want to get out at pretty much the same time.”

Dranzik is confident the airport’s final impression will be as impressive as its first.
