New Covid – 19 Vaccine arriving in Michigan
LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The Food and Drug Administration and the Center for Disease Control are urging Americans to get an updated COVID-19 vaccine as the nation sees a rise in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.
You may know someone who has COVID right now, and maybe you’ve tried to get the new vaccine… but it’s not easy to find.
The new vaccine started arriving in Michigan this week; but because the global health emergency is over, supply isn’t as plentiful as it was during the pandemic.
Dr. Nike Shoyinke, the Ingham County Health Department Medical Health Officer said, “We will see this fall season, this cold season, increased cases of COVID-19. We now have a new COVID-19 vaccine that is available to some extent.”
It was just last week, the FDA and CDC gave the green light to the updated COVIDvaccine. Unfortunately, the supply isn’t keeping up with the demand. People who thought they had an appointment to get one, get a cancellation notice blaming a delay in shipments.
“I think we’re still a little low in terms of shipping and where it’s going but the plan is that hopefully by early October the vaccine will be available to everyone who wants it and needs it,” says Dr. Shoyinka.
Some patients expecting insurance to fully cover vaccine appointments, and even COVID, testing have been surprised to learn they may have to pay out of pocket.
Jon Baker, the Administrative Director of Laboratories at Sparrow says, “During the pandemic declaration the federal state authorities wanted us to be doing that and the insurance companies were covering that but after the end of the official pandemic declaration we’re not able to do that anymore.”
The end of the pandemic has also created new changes when it comes to testing. In many cases, you need a doctor’s note to get a lab test.
“We no longer are able to provide orders and test people who haven’t seen their physicians before,” says Baker.
The Biden Administration announced Wednesday, starting Monday, it will start sending out free at-home Covid tests by request. The link to request a test can be found here. People will be able to use that link to request four free tests.

Here’s what’s next for Donald Trump in Michigan after guilty verdict
As former President Donald Trump heads toward sentencing on July 11, several factors are at play as an appeal is all but sure.
Appeals, which are an uphill slog, also take time.
“There is a distinct possibility that there may be some stay of the sentence,” said Thomas Cranmer, Principal at Miller Canfield. “The Court of Appeals might be asked to intervene on the theory that if he is sentenced on July 11 what he might be given would actually be served before the appeal could be heard.”
With polling suggesting the race between the current and former president is tight here there’s no question the verdict galvanizes Trump’s base of support in Michigan but what about those voters who are less than charmed with both major party candidates.
“I can’t imagine this is going to cut Trump’s way,” said University of Michigan political science professor Dr. Ken Kollman.
In a state where it certainly appears each of the candidates is going to need every last vote to win, Kollman likens the situation to a tie ballgame.
“The little things at the end are going to matter this is the first one of these events and I think in a tied election like this, I think this is a very momentous event that happened today,” Kollman said.

Second Michigan farm worker contracts avian flu from infected dairy cattle
A second human case of bird flu has been diagnosed in a Michigan dairy farmworker. It’s the third known human case of bird flu in the U.S. this year.
The first two identified cases — one in Texas in April, one earlier this month in Michigan — had very mild symptoms, mainly conjunctivitis or eye redness. But the latest infected worker had acute respiratory illness with cough, the CDC said.
State officials said neither of the infected Michigan farmworkers were using full personal protective equipment like a mask, ventilator, gloves and coveralls. State and federal agencies are advising workers who could be exposed to the virus to use that equipment.
Avian flu has now been found in dairy cattle on farms in 10 Michigan counties, and poultry have also been infected on farms in four Michigan counties.
The CDC says the risk of getting bird flu is elevated among those exposed to infected dairy cattle, but low for the general public.

Michigan State Police conducting motorcade training on West Michigan freeways
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Police officers in West Michigan are preparing for election season today, but they are not rehearsing their stump speeches.
The U.S. Secret Service is coordinating motorcade training with several area departments on Thursday, May 30. The training will help Michigan State Police Troopers, Sheriff’s Deputies, and local police officers be ready to help should key members of the Biden and Trump campaigns make stops in West Michigan.
The operation was not publicly talked about ahead of time.
Large groups of cruisers have been see traveling on freeways around Grand Rapids this morning, some with their lights on and traveling at high speeds.
If you see them, give the cruisers plenty of space.
