Mi Trees project to plant more than 50 million trees in Michigan
The state of Michigan is attempting to plant extra timber this yr — and officers need the general public to hitch in, too.
The “Mi Timber” marketing campaign, launched on Arbor Day in April, is encouraging folks to plant timber wherever they’ve the suitable house.
A part of the 1T effort, an initiative of the World Financial Discussion board to plant one trillion timber throughout the globe, Mi Timber has pledged 50 million timber throughout the state by 2030.
“It isn’t that one tree’s going to maintain these points, however that is the purpose. Each tree that we are able to get into the bottom goes to be a step in the fitting course,” stated Kevin Sayers, city and group forestry coordinator for the Michigan Division of Pure Assets’ forest assets division.
Timber might help with a wide range of completely different climate-related issues. Along with offering nice shade once they attain maturity, timber may improve carbon sequestration, Sayers stated, a course of that reduces the quantity of carbon dioxide within the air. They will additionally mitigate stormwater issues by intercepting rainfall from storms.
In additional city locations like Detroit, timber may scale back one thing often known as the “warmth island impact.” A warmth island is a spot sometimes in a metropolis the place temperatures are larger than elsewhere, in accordance with the Environmental Safety Company, due partially to buildings and roads that “re-emit the solar’s warmth greater than pure landscapes resembling forests and water our bodies.”
A warmth island could be as a lot as seven levels larger than outlying areas in the course of the day, the EPA stated. That may result in elevated electrical demand as folks flip up the air con, up the creation of dangerous air pollution and simply make it typically much less snug for everybody.
“There are such a lot of good, optimistic issues that come from planting timber,” Sayers stated. “It isn’t nearly constructing resilience for international local weather change. There’s loads of human well being, bodily well being and social enchancment that occur because of planting timber. Wildlife habitat is improved, water high quality is improved … there’s a variety of completely different advantages.”
Michigan DNR expects to plan greater than six million timber this yr on state forest land, which Sayers estimated could also be barely forward of what the state usually does in a yr.
To hit that fifty million purpose, members of the Division of Pure Assets are additionally encouraging members of the general public to plant their very own timber. The division has even launched an interactive map for folks to report the place they’ve planted timber.
In a Might information launch, the division estimated that almost 270 folks had already pinned greater than 50,000 timber to the map. In that very same launch, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer stated that the hassle was necessary to “defend our state’s inexperienced areas.”
“Michigan’s pure magnificence and assets are the delight and pleasure of each Michigander,” Whitmer stated, touting the funding the state has dedicated to parks as a part of her “Constructing Michigan Collectively Plan.”
If you wish to plant a tree that can final for a very long time and help the surroundings, specialists like Sayers advocate you be particular with the timber you choose to plant.
Contemplate planting native timber to your space, which might help help native wildlife by offering meals and shelter. Sayers additionally recommends ensuring that the tree you are planting is in the fitting house for the place you wish to put it — take into account how massive it will likely be when it reaches its full peak and whether or not it could be too near buildings or utility strains.
Additionally ensure that it’s planted appropriately for the soil you are planting it in and for the quantity of water it’ll get. DNR recommends watering day by day for the primary week the tree is planted after which as soon as per week after (and fewer, if the bottom feels moist). Workers at native conservation districts and even backyard facilities might help discover the very best tree on your wants, and assets are additionally out there on-line from teams such because the Arbor Day Basis.
“We’re hoping to plant timber which can be going to be right here for the long-term,” Sayers stated. “As a way to do this, it begins with getting the fitting tree, getting it in the fitting location and getting it in there the fitting means. For those who begin with poor high quality in any of these issues, it is like simply throwing cash right into a gap.”

You can watch the episode below:
Michigan State coach Tom Izzo addressed the media after Thursday’s contest.
Below is a partial transcript from Izzo’s opening statement:
Izzo: “Well, when you have a game like that, it’s hard to even know what to say except — that was Matt Larson that said it walking up the steps — I hope every media person, every alum, every student and every fan, appreciates the specialness we have here. The alumni reunions that we have every year are incredible, but for that many former Izzone members to come back over 20 and 30 years was special. Special for me, I think special for my team. And I almost felt sorry for Washington; I mean, they probably thought they were coming in here and there’d be no students. And that group was so good and so fired up; there was no entitlement, none of them left, none of them transferred. They were unbelievable. And I could have stayed there for a half hour after and thanked each and every one of them. But in all the things that happen, please appreciate that this place is different. It’s different. You can say it about places all over — this place is damn different. And I’m just thankful for them, I’m thankful for our marketing people, I’m thankful for our Izzone coach and I’m thankful for all the people that put in the work to get this thing done. I don’t want to make it bigger than the game, but for Tom Izzo, it’s bigger than the game. And when Matt said it to me walking up the steps, I thought it was special.”

Michigan State football lands Division II transfer WR Rodney Bullard from Valdosta State
Jonathan Smith continues to replenish his roster and Michigan State football’s receiver room.
The Spartans picked up a pledge Thursday from wideout Rod Bullard, a transfer from Division II Valdosta State in Georgia. The 6-foot, 170-pound native of Albany, Georgia, has two years of eligibility remaining after redshirting in 2022 and playing 28 games the past two seasons.
As a sophomore in the fall, Bullard caught 42 passes for 1,001 yards with 12 touchdowns and an average of 23.8 yards per catch. The Blazers lost to Ferris State in the Division II national title game, and Bullard had three catches for 15 yards in the 49-14 loss.

Michigan basketball signee enrolls early, will practice with team
A member of the Michigan men’s basketball 2025 recruiting class is already on campus.
Oscar Goodman, a 6-foot-7 forward from New Zealand, is enrolled for the winter semester, which started on Wednesday, a team spokesperson said. Goodman will not appear in games this season but will be allowed to practice and participate in other team activities.
The spokesperson said this was not a typical “reclassification” — when an athlete graduates early and competes in college a season ahead of a typical schedule — but a byproduct of New Zealand’s school calendar.
Goodman will be listed as a freshman on the roster (he wasn’t listed on the online version as of Thursday morning) and a redshirt freshman next season. The rest of the Wolverines returned to campus on Wednesday after a week-long stay in Los Angeles, where they beat USC and UCLA.
“Oscar arrives in Ann Arbor as an accomplished international player and prospect, who was just named to the New Zealand senior national team,” Michigan coach Dusty May said in a statement upon Goodman’s signing in November.
“He comes from a tight-knit family that values everything that we want our program to be about. His training at the NBA (Global) Academy, as well as his eagerness and ability to compete, will allow him to affect our program positively from day one.”
Goodman, from Opunake, is ranked as the No. 75 player in the 2025 class according to the 247Sports composite. He was an all-star at the 2024 FIBA under-17 World Cup after averaging 17 points, 6.3 rebounds, and three assists per game.
Michigan’s 2025 class also includes Orchard Lake St. Mary’s guard Trey McKenney, the No. 1 player in Michigan and No. 19 prospect nationally, and wing Winters Grady (No. 82), an Oregon native currently playing for Prolific Prep in Napa, California. They figure to arrive in Ann Arbor in the summer.
