Kansas City Chiefs' Chris Jones holds out in contract standoff, skips training camp
Defensive tackle Chris Jones of the Kansas City Chiefsfailed to report to the team’s training camp on Saturday, according to multiple reports. The reason behind his absence lies in an ongoing contract dispute between the player and the team.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter sheds light on the situation, revealing that both parties are currently at odds, making it challenging to reach a consensus on a new contract extension for Jones. As a result, his holdout could extend beyond the two-week camp.
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport disclosed that Jones is set to incur a hefty fine of $50,000 for each day he misses at the training camp. Such penalties serve as a significant deterrent, but it remains to be seen whether they will hasten negotiations or push Jones further away from the table.
Jones, who is entering the final year of his current contract, finds himself amid a rapidly rising defensive tackle market. His impressive performance on the field has garnered attention, especially with the recent blockbuster four-year, $96 million deal signed by New York Jets’ Quinnen Williams, setting the bar for lucrative contracts at the position.
The 28-year-old defensive tackle has undoubtedly proved his worth. Last season, Jones boasted an astonishing 21 percent pass-rush win rate, making him the undisputed best in the NFL at his position. His skills have earned him numerous accolades, including four Pro Bowl selections and both first-team and second-team All-Pro distinctions.

Jones inked a four-year, $80 million contract in July 2020, and since then, he has thrived on the field, clinching a second Super Bowl victory and making an impact in every game. This year, he is slated to take home a base salary of $19.5 million, with additional incentives potentially boosting his earnings even further.
The determined defensive tackle can earn an extra $500,000 through a workout bonus, while an impressive 10 sacks during the season could secure him an enticing $1.25 million incentive bonus. Jones has consistently proven himself, with 15.5 sacks last season, which earned him a well-deserved third-place finish in the defensive player of the year balloting.
Throughout his seven-year NFL career, Jones has demonstrated his prowess, accumulating an impressive total of 65 sacks in 107 games, 86 of which he started. His consistent performance has made him one of the most formidable defensive tackles in the league.
As negotiations continue, Jones remains focused on securing a contract that reflects his undeniable talent and value to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Titans’ Jeffery Simmons, Rams’ Aaron Donald,Washington Commanders’ Daron Payne, and the Giants’ Dexter Lawrence are among those who have recently signed significant deals, setting a precedent for Jones’ potential payday.
While the standoff continues, Chiefs fans anxiously await news of a resolution that will bring their star defensive tackle back to the field. Until then, all eyes are on the negotiation table, hoping to witness an agreement that satisfies both parties and keeps Chris Jones donning the Chiefs’ colors for years to come.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – One woman died Saturday night after she was shot in unknown circumstances, the Kansas City Police Department reported.
KCPD was dispatched to the 7600 block of Monroe Avenue around 10 p.m. on Dec. 28.
As officers were en route, a woman on her way to an area hospital flagged them down to let them know she had a shooting victim in her car who needed help.
When the officers pulled the woman out of the car, they noticed apparent gunshot wounds and started giving her medical treatment until paramedics arrived. The woman was ultimately taken to the hospital and later died.
Investigators do not currently know what led up to the shooting, nor do they have anyone in custody. They are searching for evidence and possible witnesses as they investigate the woman’s death as a homicide.
Her identity has not yet been released.

Kansas State just might add another accomplishment to a season that ended without a College Football Playoffs berth.
With Colorado’s 36-14 loss to BYU in the Alamo Bowl, the Wildcats can now at least make a case for being the No. 4 team in the Big 12. That would put them ahead of coach Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes.
Colorado entered the postseason with the fourth spot behind Arizona State, BYU and Iowa State. The Wildcats ended their season with a 44-41, comeback victory against Rutgers in the Rate Bowl. Iowa State also held off the Miami Hurricanes in the Pop-Tarts Bowl.
Baylor is awaiting its matchup with LSU in the Texas Bowl while TCU crushed Lafayette in the New Mexico Bowl and Texas Tech fell to Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl.
The Bears, Horned Frogs and Wildcats could all finish with four losses. K-State might get the edge because of their win against Colorado. The Buffaloes, who were led by quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, defeated Baylor 38-31 in September. As for TCU, two of its losses were to bottom-tier UCF and Houston.
Although the Wildcats lost to Houston, it was their only loss to a team with a losing record. The other defeats were to BYU, Arizona State and Iowa State, all bowl teams. The title of fourth-best is meaningless but it could provide much-needed momentum heading into next season and serve as a recruiting pitch this spring.

Dense fog reduced visibility to less than a quarter mile in parts of central, south central, and southeast Kansas on Saturday morning, December 28, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

A dense fog advisory would remain in effect until 10 am CST, the NWS said.
