The good, the bad and the ugly of fall calving in Iowa

Many producers throughout the state have simply endured the extreme warmth and humidity we count on from Iowa summers. Sadly, many additionally skilled far much less rainfall than we’re accustomed to over that very same time interval. A lot of the western United States wants rain and has for a while. Cow liquidation has been a necessity in lots of the predominant cow-calf producing states. A climbing calf market and powerful bred cow costs have Midwestern producers contemplating a fall calving herd…and now could be the time to make that call. Bulls want turned out subsequent month.

The well-known Eastwood spaghetti western The Good, The Dangerous, and The Ugly is an efficient strategy to fall calving for any rookies on the market. There are a whole lot of optimistic elements of fall calving, but additionally some issues that put Iowa producers at a definite drawback to these in different elements of the nation.

We’ll begin with The Good

Many producers who’ve historically calved within the early spring have termed fall calving as EASY. There are a selection of causes for that. To begin with, the cows calve on grass as an alternative of in a drylot, which makes the illness strain and bacterial load a lot much less. Secondly, the climate is significantly extra snug on common than February blizzards or March mud. We’ll speak concerning the draw back of that in a minute. Lastly, and perhaps an important a part of the simple, is calving ease. On common, fall calves come lighter than their spring counterparts. Plus, cows have grazed (exercised) all summer time and are merely in higher form to endure labor. All mentioned, there’s much less help vital, so a discount in labor usually is realized. That’s good, as a result of the mix or the grain cart awaits this time of yr.

One other profit to fall calving could be bull energy. If a producer spring calves too, it’s doubtless the bulls have been standing idle since August, tearing up feed bunks, hay rings and no matter else they will discover. Put ‘em again to work about Thanksgiving by means of Groundhog Day, and also you’ll get a 75-day calving window. The bulls might be happier breeding cows in cool December than sweltering July. You’ll be happier too, because you don’t must chore the bull pen for 75 days. The bull battery nonetheless will get a four-month break to get well earlier than breeding the spring herd commences once more. Keep in mind to semen test in November previous to turnout. Forgetting this step is usually how fall calving herds begin; extra on that in The Ugly part.

Now for The Dangerous

The trade usually refers to “spring” calves as something born from January 1st to Might 31st. Equally, the “fall” calving window appears to start out in August and finish round Christmas. Relying on which finish of the autumn window you select, the challenges could be far completely different. Beginning in August by means of the primary half of September can drive cows to endure labor in excessive warmth and humidity. Entry to shade is crucial within the early fall. Sadly, that usually pushes cows to calve close to Iowa’s shady creek banks, the place wobbly newborns can get in actual hassle. The opposite problem of early fall is flies. Nothing loves a moist nostril and udder greater than flies, and so they can pose some actual issues to contemporary calves. Contemplate a topical remedy for fly management or perhaps a garlic-laced mineral to fight this challenge. Higher but, discover a hilltop with timber, the place breeze is extra prevalent, and create a fall calving pasture. Construct or create a water system if there isn’t a pure one.

The autumn calving system in Iowa requires each fed cattle and substitute females to endure two Iowa winters earlier than they will generate any income for the operation. Delivered feed comes at a value, notably when gas, grain and hay costs are excessive like they’re at present. Feed effectivity and progress endure as effectively; Iowa cattle merely have to make use of a bigger portion of their weight loss plan to remain heat than their southern rivals. On the flipside, weaned fall calves in Iowa could possibly be used as backgrounders, capturing the surplus grass progress we expertise in Might and early June. Capturing that extra progress in a spherical bale appears to be extra in style, particularly when farm labor is preoccupied with planting soybeans and spraying corn.

The Ugly

Normally, the ugly a part of fall calving in Iowa has to do with the rationale the herd began within the first place. The bull went sterile. They simply milked too exhausting. The cows obtained skinny. Grass obtained too quick. Calving within the spring was a wreck. The listing goes on. Relatively than culling open females from the spring herd, producers justify “rolling them” to a fall calving cow. Until the producer’s revenue margin per cow is bigger than their value to hold an unproductive cow for 5-6 months, that is hardly ever a worthwhile enterprise within the quick time period. Extra importantly, the nucleus of the autumn herd usually is a bunch of females that lack pure fertility and/or the flexibility to thrive within the surroundings they name dwelling.

Low-cost cows from drought-stricken elements of the nation are a preferred “starter pack” for a fall herd. Whereas there are generally worthwhile outcomes to this enterprise, proceed with warning. Although the females can regain weight shortly through the breeding season and thru gestation, they nonetheless might be required to regulate to the grasses you have got out there. Happily, you gained’t be asking her to lactate throughout most of this era. Nevertheless, you can be asking her to get well her physique situation and rebreed on the finish of the rising season.

All mentioned, many producers in Iowa who’ve transitioned half or all of their herd to fall calving have said, “I’ll by no means return.” The challenges of winter chilly, spring mud, scours, and pulling calves merely trump no matter trials they face within the fall. The futures markets are giving sturdy indication that herd growth must occur wherever it will probably. Moreover, everyone seems to be trying For A Few {Dollars} Extra and even A Fistful of {Dollars} in as we speak’s beef trade.

No. 17 Iowa State tries to keep focus on Kansas State, not the many Big 12 title game scenarios

No. 17 Iowa State goes into its home game against Kansas State on Saturday night as one of the Big 12 teams with the highest probability of making it to the conference championship game next week.

That calculation comes from conference officials putting pencil to paper to figure out all the scenarios that could unfold on the final weekend of the regular season.

Cyclones coach Matt Campbell said his team just needs to worry about itself and not the myriad of possibilities that could determine the matchup for next week’s Big 12 title game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“To me,” he said, “all that other stuff is wasted time, effort and energy.”

If the Cyclones (9-2, 6-2, No. 18 CFP) beat the Wildcats (8-3, 5-3, No. 24 CFP), they probably would be in. Arizona State would be the likely opponent if the Sun Devils win at Arizona.

So much would have to align for the Wildcats to advance — starting with beating Iowa State — that coach Chris Klieman said he didn’t plan to address the possibilities with his players. He said he wouldn’t have to anyway.

“The kids know,” he said.

Going for 10

The Cyclones are trying to become the first team in the program’s 133-year history to win 10 regular-season games. Wildcats’ tight end Will Swanson said he wasn’t aware of the 10-win milestone until a reporter told him. He indicated he and his teammates would like to keep the Cyclones from achieving it.

“I’ll probably have to mention that,” he said, laughing.

Up and running

K-State quarterback Avery Johnson appears to be back to his old self. The staff tried to reduce his rushing attempts after he was injured Oct. 12 at Colorado. There were no limitations on him in last week’s 41-15 win over Cincinnati. He ran 10 times for 70 yards, including a 33-yard burst and a 21-yard touchdown.

“People saw when he’s healthy, we’re really good on offense,” Klieman said.

Cold, but no snow

Temperatures are expected to be in the teens in Ames, but no snow is in the forecast. Heavy snow fell during last year’s game in Manhattan, Kansas. Abu Sama III ran for 276 yards and three touchdowns and the Cyclones’ defense made a fourth-down stop in the final minute to preserve a 42-35 victory.

“I just remember the snow and Abu running wild,” ISU receiver Jayden Higgins said. “There definitely was a lot of snow on the field.”

K-State’s Swanson said the game reminded him of a backyard football game but that it “panned out terribly.”

“Some spots there were 6 inches of snow,” he said. “I remember I caught a ball and I got tackled. I was face-first in the ground and had a pound of snow between my face and my facemask.”

Injury update

Klieman said RB Dylan Edwards could return against the Cyclones after sustaining a no-contact leg injury two weeks ago against Arizona State.

Campbell said S Drew Surges will be available and DT J.R. Singleton and TE Ben Brahmer are on track to play.
