Jacksonville Jaguars at Indianapolis Colts odds, picks and predictions

The Jacksonville Jaguars square off against the Indianapolis Colts Sunday in Week 1 NFL action. Kickoff from Lucas Oil Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET (FOX). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Jaguars vs. Colts odds, and make our expert NFL picks and predictions.

The Jaguars are looking to build off of a 9-8 campaign in 2022 that saw them advance to the AFC Divisional Round before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs. With the addition of WR Calvin Ridley this offseason, QB Trevor Lawrence is expected take another step forward in his 3rd season.

The Colts finished with a dismal 4-12-1 record in 2022, which led to them replacing former head coach Frank Reich with Shane Steichen from the Philadelphia Eagles. After cycling through veteran quarterbacks in recent years, Indianapolis will now give the keys to the offense to rookie 1st-round QB Anthony Richardson, who they selected 4th overall.

Jaguars at Colts picks and predictions

Prediction

Jaguars 30, Colts 20

Moneyline

The Jaguars (-225) are favored to win Sunday’s season opener, but I’ll AVOID their moneyline at the current odds and look for better value on the spread.

Against the spread

BET JAGUARS -4.5 (-110).

The Colts don’t seem to have much to look forward to this season outside the arrival of Richardson under center. Indianapolis will be without its star RB Jonathan Taylor after he was placed on the PUP list to start a season.

The Jaguars tallied a 7-2-1 record ATS in their final 10 games last season and should pick back from where they left off in Week 1.

Over/Under

OVER 46 (-110) is how I’d wager on the total in this divisional bout as the Jaguars are poised to have an even better offense in 2023 upon adding Ridley to an already-talented receiver room.

The Colts are going to have a new-look defense that will be littered with inexperienced players, which will lead to more scoring opportunities for the Jaguars.

Meanwhile, Richardson’s rushing ability is enough to give Jacksonville’s defense a little trouble to begin the season.

Warm and muggy start to the week

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Temperatures will be running nearly 10° above average for the next couple of days.

This morning:

We’re mainly clear overhead, but there are a few areas of fog that have developed, mainly in the northern and southeastern parts of the state. Fog is not likely to become a widespread issue, but it could be dense in some spots considering how much rain we had over the weekend.

Meanwhile, temperatures are running very warm, hovering into the low and mid-60s here this morning.

Monday:

We are really going to heat things up as we roll through your Monday afternoon. Temperatures will already be very close to 80° by around lunchtime and surge into the mid and upper 80s later this afternoon. Dew points into the 60s will make it feel a bit more uncomfortable this afternoon as well.

Monday night:

Clouds will slowly build as we head through the overnight hours. There is an outside shot for an isolated thunderstorm in the western portions of the state nearing daybreak. Overnight lows will hover into the mid-60s.

Tuesday:

Much of Tuesday will be dry, with mostly sunny skies. Again, it will be pretty warm and humid, with highs into the mid-80s. There’s also a chance for some isolated thunderstorms to develop with the heat of the afternoon.

Wednesday:

An upper-level disturbance will roll through on Wednesday along with a cold front, and that should bring widespread showers and thunderstorms to much of the state. Many areas will see anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 inch of rainfall in the midweek.

High temperatures top out at around 80° on Wednesday afternoon.

8 day forecast:

We’re in for a cooldown as we head through the end of the week and into the weekend. There are some leftover showers on Thursday, but much of the day should be dry with highs near 80°. We’ll fall back into the mid-70s as we head into Friday and the start of the weekend on Saturday. The humidity will be much lower during this time frame as well. There is an outside chance for showers and thunderstorms to wrap up the weekend on Sunday, with highs near 80. It appears we’ll see another cooldown early next week, with highs in the mid-70s for Monday of next week.

'Hoosiers' legends celebrate 70th anniversary of 'Milan Miracle' at iconic Indy hardware store

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Customers stopping by Sullivan’s Hardware and Garden on Saturday might have had the chance to bump into a pair of basketball legends.

Indiana Basketball Hall-of-Famer Bobby Plump and former actor Maris Valainis dropped in the hardware store at 71st Street and Keystone Avenue for a special visit celebrating the 70th anniversary of Milan High School’s win at the 1954 Indiana High School Athletic Association Boys Basketball State Championship.

Plump shot the game-winning basket for Milan High School in the 1954 State Championship, more commonly called the “Milan Miracle” and retold by the film “Hoosiers.” The IHSAA later awarded Plump the Trester Award for mental attitude and sportsmanship.

Valainis’ tie to the “Miracle” comes from acting days when he portrayed “Jimmy Chitwood,” the character based on Plump in the 1986 movie.

The two men enjoyed their morning at the hardware store signing autographs on photos and basketballs, and taking calls on a local radio show.

Many might ask why the two “Hoosiers” chose to spend their time celebrating at the well-known shop, and the answer comes from a handful of unique connections.

While 2024 is the 70th anniversary of the championship, Sullivan’s Hardware also marks its 70th year in business. But the connections don’t end there – both Plump and Valainis have personal ties to the store.

Store managers shared with News 8 that Plump’s family had an account at the store, and he has remained a lifelong customer. Additionally, Valainis worked at Sullivan’s Hardware for some time before being cast in “Hoosiers.”

Plump spoke to News 8 about what happened in life after sinking the winning shot.

“There wasn’t very much money made back in the NBA then, (but) the state department sent us to Mexico for three weeks, we were in the Middle East for seven weeks. And for a kid from Pierceville, Indiana, when they said, ‘We’re going to the Middle East,’ we had to get a globe and turn it around and find out where the hell the Middle East was!”

He continued by expressing his love for the people who have remembered him and the “Milan Miracle” after all this time.

“It’s just been a wonderful, wonderful time, and I’m just appreciative of the fact that people remember. They’ve been awfully nice to me,” he said.
