Illinois governor’s race highlights the reactionary politics of both Democrats and Republicans
Final Thursday night, the billionaire incumbent governor of Illinois, Democrat J.B. Pritzker, and his Republican challenger, Darren Bailey, a millionaire businessman from Xenia, shared the stage within the first of two debates upfront of subsequent month’s midterm elections. Early voting started Friday in Illinois.
Pritzker is favored to win re-election by a large margin and has been endorsed by the Chicago Tribune, which has supported each Republican gubernatorial candidate for greater than 20 years. Bailey’s marketing campaign is buttressed by greater than $50 million from Dick Uihlein by a PAC operated by Dan Proft, the ultra-conservative activist behind various media shops. Uihlein is the billionaire inheritor to the Schlitz brewing fortune.
The intervention of three billionaires within the governors race, one Democratic and two Republican, is making the Illinois governor’s race the costliest on file. Pritzker spent greater than $35 million throughout the Republican major contest to make sure that Bailey, a fascist in all however title, gained the GOP nomination for governor, beating out extra reasonable candidates.
This was a part of a nationwide electoral technique on the a part of the Democrats based mostly on the cynical calculation that they’d fare higher within the basic election in opposition to extreme-right Republicans, together with many endorsed by Donald Trump, than in opposition to much less excessive ones. This has facilitated the transformation of the Republican Social gathering into an brazenly fascistic group. Greater than half of the Republican candidates standing within the November 8 elections, together with Bailey, are election deniers who don’t settle for the legitimacy of the Biden administration.
The talk occasion itself was bitter and at instances chaotic. The candidates dodged questions with a view to take pot pictures at each other, however each candidates made crime a central level of their marketing campaign.
Bailey, who refuses to acknowledge Joe Biden gained the 2020 election, has the endorsement of the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) in addition to the Chicago FOP. He claimed {that a} rise in crime will outcome from the ending of money bail in Illinois by the “SAFE-T” Act, which fits into impact on January 1, 2023.
The legislation limits the circumstances through which a decide can order pretrial detention and take into accounts the alleged crime and the accused’s previous historical past. It’s going to possible scale back the variety of individuals incarcerated earlier than trial. It additionally permits judges to detain these accused of great crimes as an alternative of permitting them to be bailed out.
Bail reform has in style help since it is not uncommon within the US for these accused who can not afford to put up money bail to stay locked up for lengthy intervals, generally weeks or months, together with proper up till their trial. The typical pretrial detention is 34 days, based on Illinois State Police information analyzed by Loyola College of Chicago’s Heart for Felony Justice Analysis.
Republicans additionally oppose the SAFE-T Act as a result of it limits the predatory follow of utilizing bail as a funding supply. Some counties perversely depend on bail cash to help their operations, and within the debate Bailey defended this established order.
Pritzker defended the SAFE-T Act and his file of help for the police, saying, “If you wish to scale back crime, you must remedy crime, and do what I’ve achieved. Which is to extend the variety of state police, construct state-of-the-art crime labs and ensure that we’re funding violence prevention.”
On the query of abortion, Bailey was requested whether or not he’d favor any exceptions for rape and incest victims, which he averted answering by presenting the legislation as settled. He mentioned, “Illinois has essentially the most permissive abortion legal guidelines within the nation. Nothing’s going to vary after I’m governor. I couldn’t change them.”
Pritzker then said that Bailey wished to get rid of a lady’s proper to decide on. “He desires to remove ladies’s reproductive rights,” the incumbent mentioned.
Bailey’s anti-abortion place is well-known. He was requested about his 2017 comparability of abortion to the Holocaust throughout his marketing campaign for a seat within the state Home, through which he declared, “The tried extermination of the Jews of World Struggle II doesn’t even evaluate on a shadow of the life that has been misplaced with abortion.”
Within the November election, there are two open seats on the Illinois Supreme Courtroom, presently made up of 4 Democrats and three Republicans. A decide’s time period is 10 years. In keeping with Ballotpedia, Mark Curran, a Republican, as soon as a sheriff in Lake County, later a senior prosecutor with the Lake County State’s Lawyer’s Workplace and a particular assistant to the US Lawyer, will face Democrat Elizabeth Rochford, a circuit court docket decide in Lake County, simply north of Chicago. Within the different race, incumbent Republican Supreme Courtroom Justice Michael Burke is going through a problem from Appellate Courtroom Justice Mary Kay O’Brien, who’s a Democrat.
On the poll in November is a constitutional modification guaranteeing staff the appropriate to pick their illustration and collectively discount at work, to which Bailey mentioned: “My message is that this: Unions, keep in your lane and every part will likely be positive. Depart Mother and Pop and personal enterprise alone.”
Bailey mentioned, “We’re being crushed by property taxes, crime. We’re being crushed by failed schooling, and it’s all as a result of J.B. Pritzker is hellbent on turning into essentially the most radical leftist governor in America.”
Along with a big farm enterprise that produces corn, soy and wheat, Bailey operates an unaccredited non-public college, Full Armor Christian Academy, with places in Illinois and Kentucky, the place his spouse is government director. The varsity boasts of its closely armed lecturers and workers.
On gun violence, Pritzker declared, “I consider we must ban assault weapons and excessive capability magazines within the state of Illinois.” Bailey responded semi-coherently: “The Highland Park capturing, it shouldn’t have occurred due to the legal guidelines which might be on the books, however when Governor Pritzker doesn’t comply with or obey these legal guidelines, this stuff occur.”
After the Highland Park capturing, which killed seven and injured 48, Bailey said on Fb: “Transfer on and let’s rejoice the independence of this nation.”
The Bailey marketing campaign is being showered with help from essentially the most right-wing sections of the Republican Social gathering. At a Republican gala dinner in downstate Marion two days after the talk, Donald Trump Jr. stumped for Bailey. He mentioned: “[W]e want a push for sturdy Republicans in all of those workplaces. Darren Bailey’s on this room proper now. You have got an opportunity to try this right here. If there’s ever an opportunity you possibly can unseat the lunatic in your governor’s mansion proper now, it’s this yr. As a result of individuals are taking a look at each little factor that’s occurring they usually’re saying, ‘What the hell is going on to our nation?’”
Trump, Jr. employed threatening and violent political language on the occasion, saying, “We’re sick of turning the opposite cheek. We’re sick of the live-and-let-live whereas they’re on the market day by day attempting to destroy our values, our beliefs, our freedoms and our Structure. Right here in Illinois, get him to the governor’s mansion. It is a conflict of attrition, guys, and like I mentioned, each facet of your existence is on the desk.”

According to Friday’s official NFL transaction report, the Kansas City Chiefs made a roster move on Friday. The team signed former Illinois defensive end Owen Carney, making room on the roster by waiving linebacker Luquay Washington.
Carney checks in at 6 foot 3 and 275 pounds. Now 25, he first joined the league as an undrafted free agent for the Miami Dolphins in 2022, but didn’t make the regular season’s initial roster. That November, the Cincinnati Bengals signed him to their practice squad — and then to a reserve/future contract for 2023. But once again, he didn’t make the team’s regular-season roster.
Over five seasons in Illinois, Carney appeared in 55 games, recording 116 tackles (53 solo, 21.5 for loss), 16 sacks, a forced fumble and three passes defensed.
The Chiefs now have 91 players under contract, with a full complement of 90 players on its active roster. (Offensive tackle Chukwuebuka Godrick has an International Pathway Program roster exemption). We now estimate that the Chiefs have $14.1 million in cap space.
