White Sox 2nd fastest in MLB to lose 100 games
CHICAGO — Andy Ibanez homered and had three RBIs as the Detroit Tigers sent the Chicago White Sox to their 100th loss with a 9-4 victory on Sunday.
Andrew Vaughn doubled, homered and had two RBIs for the White Sox (31-100), who need to go 12-19 to avoid tying the 1962 New York Mets, who were 40-120-1, for the modern major league record for most losses in a season. Chicago will fall short of the all-time record held by the Cleveland Spiders, who finished 20-134 in 1899.
In MLB history, only the 1916 Philadelphia A’s, who were 29-100-1, reached 100 losses in fewer games than the White Sox.
“We have been talking about it all year. It’s beating a dead horse at this point. We are not where we want to be,” White Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi said. “[Interim manager Grady Sizemore] said it best: ‘Unless you win the last game of the year, it doesn’t matter.’ So, I think everyone has moved on.”
Colt Keith had three hits and three RBIs for the Tigers (65-66), who have won four of five. The two teams will conclude their four-game series Monday.
Chicago has lost 100 or more games six times in franchise history and in consecutive seasons for the first time. They went 61-101 last season under manager Pedro Grifol, who was fired Aug. 8. Chicago is 3-11 under Sizemore.
“We know where we are at,” Benintendi said. “We know it’s not good.”
The White Sox dropped a club-worst 106 games in 1970. Their worst winning percentage is .325, when they went 49-102-1 in 1932.
Bryan Sammons (1-1) allowed a run and three hits in 4⅓ innings for Detroit to earn the victory.
“It wasn’t the most efficient day on the mound,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “But offensively, we did a lot of really positive things.”
Starter Jonathan Cannon (2-8) gave up five runs and eight hits in four innings for the White Sox.
“Obviously, no one wants to lose 100 games, especially with still a month to go,” Cannon said. “But we’re going to keep coming here every day, getting our work in and keep just going out there and trying to win some ball games.”
Benintendi and Vaughn hit back-to-back doubles off opener Beau Brieske to put the White Sox ahead 2-0 in the first.
Detroit’s Kerry Carpenter doubled, reached third on center fielder Dominic Fletcher’s fielding error and scored on Keith’s single to cut the lead to 2-1 in the third. Chicago had four errors.
Vaughn hit his 15th homer, a solo shot, off Sammons in the third to increase Chicago’s lead to 3-1.
Zach McKinstry singled, stole second and scored on Parker Meadows’ triple to make it 3-2 in the fourth.
The Tigers scored three runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Carpenter, Keith and Jace Jung hit consecutive singles to tie it before pinch hitter Ibanez grounded into a fielder’s choice and Trey Sweeney singled to bring in the other runs.
“In every inning, you give yourself a puncher’s chance when you are creating opportunities for yourselves,” Hinch said. “That’s what you have to hang your hats on, and just keep grinding.”
Ibanez hit a two-run homer off Enyel De Los Santos in the seventh and Keith added a two-run double in the eighth.
“Everyone in that locker room is aware of the record and how frustrating it is, absolutely,” Sizemore said.

Detroit Tigers Seek to Extend Winning Streak vs. Chicago White Sox
The Detroit Tigers’ recent play and opponent gives them a chance to get back to .500 for the season when they face the Chicago White Sox on Sunday afternoon at Progressive Field in Chicago.
First pitch is set for 2:10 PM eastern.
The unusual four-game, wraparound series ends on Monday. Detroit (64-66) has already beaten Chicago (31-99) twice in the series, victories Sunday and Monday would allow the Tigers to get back to the .500 mark. That’s no small feat for a team trying to blend being competitive with a youth movement and an eye on the 2025 season.
Detroit is also blending true starters like Tarik Skubal — who won Saturday’s game — with relievers who are serving as openers, such as Sunday’s starter, Beau Brieske.
The 26-year-old right-hander is primarily a reliever but he will make his seventh start and his 32nd appearance of the season on Sunday.
He last pitched against the Chicago Cubs on Monday, where he threw two innings and gave up no runs on one hit. He struck out three.
In this blended role he is 1-1 with a 1.69 ERA in his last seven games, four of which were starts. He’s only pitched 10.2 innings in that span, but he has struck out 15 and walked five while giving up two earned runs. He should give Detroit a good start on Sunday.
The White Sox will counter with 24-year-old right-hander Jonathan Cannon. The rookie is preparing to make his 15th start of the season and carries 2-7 record with a 4.26 ERA into the contest. He also has a save, as he has two additional relief appearances.
In his last start on Monday he gave up five earned runs and eight hits in six innings against San Francisco. He struck out four and walked one. In his last seven games he is 1-5 with a 4.32 ERA.
The Tigers put one of their top players, infielder Javier Báez, on the 10-day injured list on Friday with spine and hip inflammation. It’s not clear how long Báez will be out of the lineup. But it does give the Tigers an opportunity to play more young players as they look to next year.
Recently, the Tigers called up both Trey Sweeney and Jace Jung to man third base and shortstop, respectively, the rest of the season. Detroit is also giving plenty of rope to catcher Dillon Dingler, one of the organization’s higher-ranked prospects who joined the team in late July and is attempting to make his own case for a role next season.
After this series concludes, the Tigers return to Comerica Park on Tuesday to begin a series with the Los Angeles Angels.

Winners and losers from Pittsburgh Steelers’ preseason loss to the Detroit Lions
DETROIT — The Pittsburgh Steelers finished out the preseason with a 24-17 road loss to the Detroit Lions, but the vibe from the final game was far different from the previous two. As the offense showed signs of life, the Steelers checked off progress boxes.
With that being said, looking back in the loss, here are some winners and losers from the game:

Hot, humid weather arrives with storm chances in Metro Detroit
A splendid summer Saturday will be followed by a sauna-like Sunday in Metro Detroit.
Daytime and overnight temperatures will increase. Saturday night, lows will be in the lower to mid 60s. The warmer locations will be near Detroit, Warren, Dearborn and Downriver. Lows will be around 60 degrees in the Thumb. Skies will be partly cloudy, and southwesterly winds will be 5 mph and lower.
Sunday
Sunday morning will bring the chance of a few sprinkles in the morning. Then, an isolated shower or thunderstorm could pop up during the afternoon and evening. The Storm Prediction Center has placed areas south of M-59 in Southeast Michigan in the marginal (level one of five) risk category, because there is a very low chance that an isolated thunderstorm could produce gusty winds. Sunday’s low risk should not warrant a change of outdoor plans, unless threatening weather approaches. Most areas will not see any rain. Plan on partly cloudy skies, but check the 4Warn Weather App for Exact Track 4D Radar and any updates.
The bigger issue for most people will be the heat. Sunday afternoon’s temperatures will reach the upper 80s in Metro Detroit and the mid 80s in the Thumb. Winds will be out of the south and southwest around 5 mph.
Sunday night, under partly cloudy skies, lows will be in the upper 60s.
Monday
The heat and humidity will turn up a notch on Monday. Drinking water and other healthy beverages will be key. Highs will be around 90 degrees, while the heat index will reach the lower 90s. It will be partly cloudy during the day and night. Lows will only be around 70 degrees.
Tuesday
The conditions will be favorable for Tuesday to get even hotter. A warmer, more humid air mass will push into Southeast Michigan, which will be followed closely by a cold front. There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms, including the possibility for a couple of them to become strong to severe. Highs will be in the lower 90s with heat indices in the mid to upper 90s.
Midweek through Weekend
A stray shower will be possible on Wednesday, but the chance is very low. There will be a slight chance of rain on Thursday and a better chance on Friday. The daytime highs will cool to near normal by next weekend.
