September 23 – Shea Langeliers delivered a three-run, pinch-hit home run, Ken Waldichuk made a successful return to the rotation and the Oakland Athletics snapped an eight-game losing streak with an 8-2 thumping of the visiting Detroit Tigers on Friday night.

Esteury Ruiz chipped in with a two-RBI single in a three-run seventh inning for the A’s (47-107). They exploded for seven runs over a two-inning stretch after having been held to a total of 14 runs in the first seven games of what had been a winless homestand.

After a two-run home run by Carson Kelly, his second of the season, flipped a one-run deficit into a 2-1 Tigers lead in the fifth, the A’s jumped on the Detroit bullpen for four runs in the sixth. The rally was ignited by a leadoff homer from Brent Rooker off Will Vest (2-1). It was Rooker’s 29th long ball of the season.

An error by Tigers shortstop Javier Baez and single by Lawrence Butler set the stage for Langeliers. The pinch hitter greeted Detroit’s third pitcher, Tyler Holton, with his blast to left field that propelled the hosts into a 5-2 lead.

The uprising came immediately after the visitors pulled starter Sawyer Gipson-Long, who left with a 2-1 lead after allowing just four hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out four.

Ruiz’s big hit in the seventh came after Oakland had loaded the bases as Zack Gelof walked, Seth Brown doubled and Rooker was hit by a pitch. Butler followed Ruiz with a sacrifice fly, increasing the Athletics’ advantage to 8-2.

Waldichuk (4-8), who had served as a bulk-innings reliever in his previous two outings, enjoyed one of his best starts of the season, limiting the Tigers to two runs and four hits in six innings. The left-hander struck out seven without issuing a walk.

Rooker scored twice and Ryan Noda had two hits for the A’s, who have beaten the Tigers in three of five meetings this season.

Baez had two doubles and Miguel Cabrera his 17th two-bagger of the season for Detroit (72-82), which was out-hit 9-5.

The Washington Nationals, who have equaled their longest winning streak of the season, will shoot for a fifth straight victory during the second game of a three-game series at Detroit on Wednesday.

The Nationals pulled out a 5-4, 10-inning win over the Tigers on Tuesday with Lane Thomas driving home the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly. Washington won the last three games of a four-game series against the Atlanta Braves over the weekend. The Nationals won four straight in late April, all at Miami.

Detroit right-hander Reese Olson (1-7, 3.43 ERA) will look to halt Washington’s success while attempting to bounce back from his worst outing of the season. Olson, who has pitched far better than his record suggests, surrendered eight runs and 12 hits in four innings against Milwaukee on Friday.

The Brewers’ first five runs came in the second inning.

“I think I made some good pitches that were able to find holes,” Olson said. “As a whole, I’m not really happy with my performance. Combined maybe a little bit of bad luck with some poorly executed pitches, all in one inning. It kind of unraveled on me. …

“I’ve been pretty good up until this point. I’ll look back at maybe what I can improve on, but for the most part, flush this one and move on.”

In his previous outing, he gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings at Boston on June 1. Olson entered the month with a 1.92 ERA.

He will be facing Washington for the first time.

The Nationals will counter with right-hander Jake Irvin (4-5, 3.12 ERA), who has delivered four consecutive quality starts. During that span, he has given up four runs in 24 1/3 innings (1.48 ERA). Irvin has notched 26 strikeouts and just five walks in those outings.

In his latest start, he held the Braves scoreless for six innings on Friday.

“A lineup like that is a daunting task, and those guys are really good over there,” Irvin said. “For me, it’s all about competing, just making really good pitches and keeping a high level of pitches throughout all those innings.

“For me, it was changing speeds. Me and (catcher Drew Millas) were working hard between innings, kind of what the plan was going to be, how we were going to attack these guys, and I thought it all went pretty well.”

Irvin pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the third inning.

“He’s learned so much in a short period of time (about) how to stay in control in situations like that,” Washington manager Dave Martinez said. “High-leverage situations don’t seem to rattle him that much, don’t seem to bother him. He knows what he needs to do, and he worked really good. And that says a lot about Millas, too. Millas called a good game.”

Irvin lost his only previous outing against Detroit, allowing six runs (four earned) in 2 2/3 innings on May 19, 2023.

The Tigers failed to hold a 4-3 lead on Tuesday, surrendering an unearned run in the eighth inning that tied the game. Detroit committed two errors in the frame, including one by shortstop Ryan Kreidler. He was promoted from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday when Javier Baez was placed on the 10-day injured list due to lumbar spine inflammation.

“Javy has had bouts with the back dating back awhile,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “He’s managed it. But I had a meeting with him over the weekend and he let me know it was harder and harder for him to feel like he could get through the game.”

Trial begins for man accused of killing well-known Detroit Synagogue president

DETROIT, Mich. (WILX) – The accused killer of well-known Detroit Jewish community leader Samantha Woll sat before a jury in Detroit on Tuesday.

The prosecution and defense set up their cases as they gave opening statements surrounding the brutal murder.

“The evidence in this case is going to show you the man that did this to her is the defendant Michael Jackson Balanos,” said Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Ryan Elsey.

Michael Jackson Bolanos has been charged with felony murder, home invasion and lying to police.

Elsey pieced together a murder mystery puzzle, claiming Bolanos stabbed Woll to death during a home invasion last October.

“She was bloody, she was barefoot, she was cold to the touch at that time when the police arrived they found a trail of blood that led to her body to her townhome,” said Elsey.

Defense attorney Brian Brown argued Bolanos is innocent, and brought up the possibility of another suspect, Woll’s ex boyfriend.

“To me, that would indicate a crime of passion,” said Brown.

The prosecution wanted to clear up the confusion.

“He called police during what he would describe as a panic attack… He had essentially convinced himself that he may have killed Ms. Woll but he couldn’t remember anything about it,” said Elsey.

It’s just the beginning of the trial.

Report: Detroit Tigers would listen to offers on top trade chip Jack Flaherty

Will the Detroit Tigers be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline this season?

That question won’t be answered for another six weeks or so with the trade deadline scheduled for July 30 this season and the Tigers’ hovering around a .500 record (32-33 entering Tuesday). But that hasn’t stopped the speculation about what all 30 teams will be up to when the deadline arrives.

In an article on the Athletic with 30 rumors and things to watch before the trade deadline, MLB writer and former front office executive Jim Bowden listed Tigers’ right-handed starter Jack Flaherty, who has had a bounce-back season in Detroit’s rotation after joining as a free agent, as one of the “best starting pitchers expected to be traded at the deadline.”

Flaherty is listed as one of the most attractive starters in the market along with Jesús Luzardo (Marlins), Luis Severino (Mets), Tyler Anderson (Angels), Erick Fedde (White Sox), Garrett Crochet (White Sox) and Trevor Williams (Nationals), with all of them carrying “exorbitant” asking prices due to the lack of elite starting pitchers available.

Later in the piece in a different bullet point, Bowden wrote, “The Tigers won’t trade Tarik Skubal but they’ll listen on Jack Flaherty, who is having a strong season with Detroit. Flaherty (3.22 ERA, 11.64 strikeouts per nine innings) could bring back a haul.”

Flaherty, who will be a free agent after the season, has thrown 72⅔ innings in 12 starts this season and holds a 3-4 record with a 3.22 ERA. Flaherty has the fourth-most strikeouts of any pitcher in the American League at 94, trailing Skubal, Kansas City’s Cole Ragans and Crochet. He is fifth in the AL in WHIP (0.96), second in strikeouts per nine innings (11.64) behind Crochet and fourth in FIP (2.71). He has accumulated 1.9 fWAR this season, the sixth-most of any AL pitcher, potentially putting him in All-Star consideration.

Last season, the Tigers ended up as sellers and shipped Michael Lorenzen to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for current Double-A Erie infielder Hao-Yu Lee, but couldn’t execute a deal to flip pending free agent pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez, who left Detroit for Arizona in the offseason.

The Tigers entered Tuesday sitting 2½ games behind the Minnesota Twins for the final AL wild-card spot and 10½ games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the division lead with the trade deadline 50 days away. The Tigers have a highly-ranked prospect system that could either facilitate a trade or help fill in spots on the roster if president of baseball operations Scott Harris decides on a sale of veterans such as Flaherty based on the Tigers’ outlook in the standings in six weeks.

The Padres, Brewers, Cardinals, Braves, Guardians, Diamondbacks and Red Sox are all teams mentioned by Bowden as teams that could be potential be buyers in the starting pitching market.
