Campbell: ‘We’re in the Middle of the Circus’

Campbell: ‘We’re in the Middle of the Circus’

The Detroit Lions have high expectations as they begin their journey to New Orleans.

As the NFC No. 1 seed, the Lions had the advantage of earning a first-round bye and now need to win two games to punch their ticket to the Super Bowl. It is, in some ways, uncharted territory for an organization that has never been the top seed in the NFC.

However, this team is comprised of players that made a run to the NFC Championship game last season. It’s a young team that has valuable playoff experience, and as a result Dan Campbell does not view added expectation or pressure being attached to the team as a new experience.

“We’ve had attention for four years here. There’s been more stuff that’s been made out, that’s been built one way,” Campbell said. “We’ve been so good, we’ve been so bad. We were a laughingstock, now we’re great. And it’s been this rollercoaster of up and downs, and it’s the next week of it. This is nothing new that we’re in. This is nothing new for me, for the coaches, for the players. We’re in the middle of the circus, man, and it’s about time to perform.”

There could be more pressure facing the Lions as a result of the team holding the top seed and home field advantage. However, Campbell hasn’t allowed doubt to creep into the organization.

“I don’t think about, ‘Man, we’re the one seed, so if you guys don’t succeed, then —’ I never think like that. I don’t know, to me, I look at it as like — I know how who we are. I know what we’re about. I know how we have to prepare,” Campbell explained. “I respect the opponent, and now it’s time to go to work. That’s how I look at it. I don’t look at anything else. I don’t think of, ‘What if it doesn’t?’ The what ifs, like f**k man, I couldn’t sleep at night if I lived that way. There’s no freakin’ way. We’re the one seed, we earned the one seed. We’ve got a good opponent coming in, and we’re gonna be ready to play.”

Ultimately, the team’s goal is to reach the Super Bowl and emerge victorious. However, the team has been steady in not letting their focus divert from the upcoming opponent, and even with the postseason arriving it appears that the team will once again remain focused on the next opponent ahead.

“No, listen everything’s about this game right now,” Campbell said. “I’ve said it before, I’ve been to a Super Bowl and I’ve lost it. It stings. It’s about this week. We’ve got to find a way to win this game, this week.”

Notes

The Lions have multiple key players dealing with injuries suffered in the team’s win over Minnesota, including offensive lineman Kevin Zeitler and cornerback Terrion Arnold. Campbell did not have a new update on either player, as the team was given three days off prior to returning Monday.

“I’ll know more tomorrow. I’ll know more tomorrow where everybody’s at,” Campbell said. “Yeah, I can’t give you a straight up answer off of three days off really. I just know everybody’s treatment has gone well and we’ll see.”

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy skies. High: 24.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy skies, a chance of snow showers. Low: 11.

After most of the region saw some snow shower activity through the late afternoon and evening hours on Sunday, we’re going to keep the chance of snow showers into the forecast throughout the start of the week.

As a cold front moves through the region today, we will keep the chance of snow showers into the forecast as the lake effect snow machine is turned back on again thanks to a northwest flow. High temperatures will head into the upper 20s on Monday, will drop into the upper teens and lower 20s by Tuesday afternoon.

Expect falling temperatures throughout the day on Monday with temperatures into the lower 20s by the late afternoon and evening hours. But, once you factor in the winds, wind chills will be going below zero by the evening through the overnight hours and into Tuesday Morning for most of the region.

Another arctic blast moves in looking ahead into the middle of next week, with highs on Tuesday into the lower 20s and overnight lows into the low teens and single digits, we will see a gradual warm-up looking ahead into the end of next week. The snow showers will wind down by Tuesday night, and will keep a few flakes into the forecast on Wednesday otherwise expect plenty of cloud cover.

As we watch another front roll through the region by Thursday, we will bring the chance of snow showers back to the region for the day on Thursday. High temperatures warming up a bit, into the lower 30s by the afternoon.

Then, we will dry things out for Friday, but keep the cloud cover around, and then a chance of rain and snow showers moves into the region for the start of the weekend on Saturday. We’ll watch an area of low pressure move south of the region, and with enough cold air in place and high temperatures just above the freezing mark, we will hold onto the chance of some rain and snow showers.

Cloud cover sticks around for the end of the weekend on Sunday, but then we go back into the freezer again. High temperatures will drop into the middle 20s by Sunday afternoon.

Families welcome snow, cold, Elsa from ‘Frozen’ at Detroit Fire and Ice Festival

Detroit — After a snowfall that stuck, Detroiters took advantage of winter games and activities at the riverfront Sunday.

The Fire and Ice Festival at Robert Valade Park attracted families, especially those who are fans of the animated kids’ movie “Frozen.” Elsa, one of its main characters, visited the park Sunday afternoon.

Johnathan Schultz of Detroit, 45, was strolling his 6-month-old baby while his 4-year-old daughter Norah, who’s a “Frozen fanatic,” was blowing off steam with winter activities until she could meet Elsa.

“She was pretty hyped for it. … People are always complaining that it’s cold, I personally love the cold,” Schultz said.

“She didn’t want to sit in the ice throne. I think the ice throne was a little intimidating for her 4-year-old brain, but mom sat in the ice throne so we got a winning pic out of that.”

The Fire and Ice Festival was named after “A Song of Ice and Fire,” the book series that inspired “Game of Thrones.” The festival also featured ice sculpting, medieval strolling performers who held adventure quests for families, activities like inflatable ax throwing and sledding, live bands and items from local vendors.

Jodi Arka of Allen Park, 38, brought her 5-year-old twins, 8-year-old and 3-year-old to the festival. She wanted to get the kids out of the house during the winter season. They played inflatable basketball, throwing basketballs at multiple rims.

“We went to Atwater (Brewery), had lunch and then let them play the games in the park, check out the ice sculptures,” Arka said.

Roslyn Wiseman of Detroit, 53, was with her 3-year-old granddaughter and husband who she watched sled down a hill at the park. Her granddaughter and other girls were able to take pictures with Elsa.

“We wanted to bring the baby out so that she could sled, to get her in some participation in some cold weather fun,” Wiseman said. “I like to do things in the city, so when I see something pop up in the city we try to make it down.”

Darcie Burton of Detroit was cuddling up with her 8-month-old boy at a giant fireplace. Her 3-year-old daughter loves Elsa which was the selling point for making it out to Sunday’s event.

“We like that there’s snow on the ground,” Burton said. “We were a little bit bummed out that nobody was here a few weeks ago when it first snowed but now that it’s after the holidays, this is a great place to go.”

Until Feb. 23, parkgoers will find winter games, sledding, fireplaces, Fireside Fridays with karaoke and Self Care Sundays featuring mindfulness classes as part of Winter at Valade Park.
