Atomos Space Announces First Orbital Demonstration Mission
In-space logistics provider Atomos Space will launch two internally designed spacecraft into orbit February 2024, the Broomfield, Colo.-based company announced today.
The vehicles, named Quark and Gluon, will perform rendezvous, docking, refueling, and orbital transfer in a demonstration mission dubbed “The Singing Astronomer” (after astronomer and opera singer Caroline Herschel, the first woman to receive a salary as a scientist), the company says.
Atomos Space was founded in 2018 and has raised more than $26 million in three rounds of funding and $5.5 million in United States government contracts. The February 2024 launch will be the company’s first orbital mission.
The Quark Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV) and Gluon spacecraft will launch on SpaceX’s Transporter 10. After separation from the launch vehicle, the OTV will attempt to rendezvous and dock autonomously to Gluon. Once docked, Quark will refuel from Gluon before commencing further release, docking, propulsive and orbital transfer demonstrations, the company says.
“Nothing like this mission has been attempted since DARPA’s Orbital Express, which had a budget more than 20x ours,” notes Atomos CEO Vanessa Clark. “The size of our team–less than 40–makes this especially extraordinary.”
Atomos calls its OTVs “space-residents,” as they are intended to reside in low orbit. This architecture puts the “last mile delivery vans at the arrival airport and not on the plane with the cargo,” Clark says. “We gain performance and greatly reduce our costs by making it reusable. Having our OTVs staged on-orbit is a huge change to the status-quo.”

Lake Effect Snow Could Disrupt Roads Across Northern Ohio This Week
-Advertisement-
Cleveland, OH – Snowfall will sweep into Ohio late Sunday evening, potentially impacting Monday morning commutes, especially south of US-30. Drivers in Cleveland and surrounding areas are urged to prepare for slick conditions and reduced visibility during peak travel times.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Cleveland, the storm will arrive after midnight and persist through Monday afternoon. Snow accumulation is expected to vary, with areas south of US-30 seeing 2-4 inches, while northern regions may receive less than 2 inches. A sharp gradient in snowfall amounts is predicted, making road conditions unpredictable across the region.
High winds, gusting up to 32 mph, are expected Monday, further reducing visibility. Motorists are advised to use caution and allow extra travel time. Blustery conditions will persist through Monday evening, and wind chills will make temperatures feel even colder.
Looking ahead, scattered snow showers will continue through midweek. Tuesday’s high is forecast at 29°F, with light snow possible. By Wednesday, expect additional flurries and a high near 25°F. The colder pattern is set to linger through the week, with highs in the mid-20s and overnight lows dipping into the teens.
Stay updated with local weather advisories and check road conditions before heading out. Emergency kits with blankets, water, and flashlights are recommended for those traveling longer distances.

Livelsberger was married and had an eight-month-old daughter.
His father last spoke with him on Christmas.

At the time of the truck explosion on New Years Day, 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger was on holiday leave from his station in Germany.
He married his second wife in 2022 and became a father last year.
They lived in Colorado Springs with his family while he traveled back and forth to Europe.
Livelsberger married his first wife here in Ohio, according to Franklin County Court records showing he applied for a marriage license in late 2012.

His family said he had no signs of extremist beliefs or mental health issues.
Right now the FBI and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police are trying to determine a motive.
“So as I mentioned, the motivation at this point is unknown. We are, as I mentioned earlier, following investigative leads both domestically and internationally as well. And so that includes search warrants and witness interviews, collecting forensic information, and basically trying to compile the facts,” said FBI Special Agent Spencer Evans said at a press conference Thursday.
