1 shot outside of funeral service for Cleveland 23-year-old killed while holding baby: Police

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – Police are investigating a shooting that occurred Friday morning outside of the funeral service for the 23-year-old woman killed while holding her baby.

CPD says the shooting happened following a possible attempted robbery outside of the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, located at 3290 E. 126th St.

The shooting occurred in the middle of the church’s celebration of life for Di’Mesha Wright. Wright was fatally shot Dec. 14 while holding her baby.

Gunfire rang out as three women spoke at the podium, all of which caught on video.

Those in attendance then rushed from their seats.

“This is unbelievable that things go to this measure in the house of God,” one man said. “I’m not talking about the reaction to what just happened. I’m talking about all these guns going off for no reason.”

“If you’re not helping our community, you need to be gone,” the man continued.

Congresswoman Shontel Brown (OH-11), who attended the service, said the gun violence needs to come to an end.

“The level of gun violence is devastating and demoralizing. It’s unfathomable that while we were mourning a young woman who was shot and killed, gunfire would be heard outside her service. My heart breaks for everyone who endured today’s assault while memorializing the life and violent loss of a loved one. People should at least be able to attend a funeral in peace. As a member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, it’s painful to see what my friends and loved ones are needlessly enduring. As a member of Congress, I’m going to continue fighting for gun safety legislation, because no one, no community, deserves to live in fear.”

Cleveland City Councilman Michael Polensek said he, on behalf of the entire Cleveland City Council, was outraged by the shooting.

“It’s a complete disregard for human life,” Polensek continued. “It makes me sick. Something needs to be done, even if it means bringing the Ohio Highway Patrol back into the city.

“We’re not going to see an increase in officers until the fall,” he added.

Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb also provided the following statement:

“This is gun violence occurring on top of gun violence – a shooting outside a funeral service for a victim killed by a previous shooting just last week. This. Must. Stop. We are deploying every single possible resource and officers are working around the clock every day throughout the City to combat crime; however we cannot do this alone. Those who use guns to commit crimes in our city need to ask themselves when is enough going to be enough?”

Cleveland police said a man, approximately 33 years old, was shot in the leg. His current condition unknown.

CPD says the shooting remains under investigation.
