Slimming jabs labelled ‘no panacea’ as exercise prevents 3m illnesses a year

Sir Chris said: “Being physically active is one of the best things we can do to stay healthy and independent throughout our lives, and sport is one of the most enjoyable ways to achieve this.

“The greatest health gains are from helping people who do little activity to do a bit more. This report shows that we need to make it easier for particular groups to engage in physical activity, including sport.”

Ministers are already considering whether swimming and gym rehab schemes could be prescribed on the NHS to help solve Britain’s worklessness crisis.

Back-pain sufferers have been referred by their GP for swimming or exercise sessions under pilot schemes at 94 sites. Researchers said the exercise schemes could mean millions of people suffering from musculoskeletal pain could receive help sooner, instead of being left to languish on NHS waiting lists.

‘A fit and happy nation’

Lord O’Donnell, the economist and former Cabinet secretary, said: “Constraints on public spending are severe. This makes it more important than ever to focus our investments on those most in need and where we can make the most difference. This new evidence from Sport England starts to point the way.”

Stephanie Peacock, the sports minister, said: “These findings from Sport England underline just how vital sport and physical activity are to creating a fit and happy nation. Supporting the country to get active will be crucial in achieving our mission of building an NHS fit for the future.

“We are committed to giving people every opportunity to lead active lives for all the brilliant benefits it brings, helping to tackle some of the nation’s most pressing health issues.”

I'm a health writer, and these are the 2 fitness tools helping me transition my workouts into the new year

I'm a health writer, and these are the 2 fitness tools helping me transition my workouts into the new year

I’m late to the smartwatch game, but I’m obsessed with my TicWatch Atlas, which has all the bells and whistles I need to stay on top of my workouts.

As a runner, my favorite feature is the built-in GPS, which allows you to track your runs, bike rides and hikes without the need to tote along a phone. I also love the heart rate monitor, which I use to stay in my target heart rate zones. If you’re new to the concept, following the American Heart Association’s guidelines is a good starting point.

In addition to offering multiple sports modes to track your workouts, including everything from swimming to yoga, the TicWatch Atlas syncs to your phone to make it easy to track a variety of health metrics. It provides a snapshot of your daily activity levels, sleep quality and even your current stress levels, by using heart rate variability. This is particularly nice during the holidays, when stress levels often spike. For instance, I may know I’m extra stressed, but seeing it reflected on the app is a good reminder to take a time out. Lately, I’ve been leveraging this information and opting to do a quick meditation session on ALO Moves to help keep me centered.

While I’m not particularly tech-savvy, this model is extremely user-friendly. The best part? It not only motivates me to stay active, but it gives me real-time data to reach my goals more effectively. If you lead an active lifestyle and love a good gadget, this smartwatch is a great option.

8 health and fitness tips to stave off an indulgent Christmas

Let’s face it, we all know that Christmas and the holidays can be a pretty indulgent time of the year. Even if you’ve promised yourself this is the year where you take it a bit easier, you take your eye off the ball for just a few days and all of a sudden you’re 18 iced mince pies deep and your chiseled physique now resembles that of a melted ice cream.

Just me? Perhaps, but keeping on top of your fitness at this time of year is almost impossible; the gyms are closed, the food is rich and calorific, and the drinks (alcoholic or otherwise) flow non-stop. Cutting loose in December is also doubly impactful because January is often the time of year when people try to make the biggest dent in their fitness. I can’t even count how many times I’ve tried to start a New Year fitness push, lacing up my best gym shoes while in the worst shape of my life.
