Obituary: Jean Waters – The Eastern New Mexico News
Our dear mother, Jean Waters, passed away peacefully from this life into the loving arms of our Lord, surrounded by her family on January 20, 2024, at the age of 97. She would have celebrated her next birthday on February 10, 2024. Jean was born in Warren, Arkansas to Victor and Helen VanArsdel. She attended school there through 6th grade. The family moved to Little Rock where she attended school until she graduated from high school. Jean attended college at TSCW (now TWU) in Denton, Texas and earned bachelor’s degrees in advertising & design and journalism. Denton is where she met her future husband, Maurice. They married on June 5, 1949, at The Little Chapel in the Woods in Denton.
Jean was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and a great grandmother. She was always there when we needed her. She had many friends and was very active in the community and First Presbyterian Church in Clovis. Some of her friends called her “Never-Say-No” Waters. Some of the many areas she was involved in over the past 70 plus years in the community are PTA, Girl Scouts, United Way, Chapter G PEO, Meals on Wheels, First Presbyterian Food Bank, Bible study and Circle leader at First Presbyterian Church. Jean and her family were active members of First Presbyterian Church since 1951 when her young family, Dr. Maurice Waters and infant daughter moved to Clovis.
She is survived by her children: Nancy (Bill) Skaggs of Weatherford, Ok, grandchild, Cindy (Tate) Behne of Weatherford, OK; Dr. Sally Waters (Tom Beier) of Ruidoso, NM; Dr. Mark (Desiree) Waters of Clovis, NM, grandchildren, Hunter (Brooke) Waters of Ruidoso, NM, Dr. Cameron (Dr. Sarah) Waters of Lakewood, CO, Dr. Caitlin Waters of Scottsdale, AZ; Dr. Jack (Tammy) Waters of Clovis, NM. Jean is also survived by 5 great grandchildren: Dax, Zane and Vanna Behne; Laken and River Waters.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; Victor and Helen VanArsdel, and her husband; Dr. Maurice Waters.
We invite ALL of our family and friends to the visitation. It will be held on Sunday, January 28, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Muffley Funeral Home, 1430 Thornton Street.
