Nevada basketball drops close game to Vanderbilt for its first loss of the season
Nevada battled back after falling into a hole in the second half, but the Wolf Pack suffered its first loss of the season, 73-71, to Vanderbilt on Thursday in the Charleston Classic in Charleston, S.C.
The Wolf Pack plays VCU at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Seton Hall beat VCU, 69-66, in overtime Thursday.
Tyler Rolison and Kobe Sanders each had 13 points to lead Nevada as the Wolf Pack fell to 4-1. Brandon Love had 11 points and Nick Davidson added nine points and nine rebounds.
The Commodores led 59-47 midway through the second half. Nevada got back within one in the final minutes but could not get any closer.
Nevada led by 10 in the early going before Vanderbilt rallied to take a 37-35 lead into the break.
Nevada shot 54 percent for the field (29-of-54) while Vanderbilt shot 47 percent (28-59). Both team shot 6-of-15 from 3-point range.
Nevada had a 33-30 edge in rebounding. Both teams had 13 assists. Nevada committed 16 turnovers while Vanderbilt had 13.
A.J. Hoggard, a Michigan State transfer, led Vanderbilt (5-0) with 18 points, Jason Edwards added 16 and MJ Collins had 15. Vanderbilt plays Seton Hall at 2 p.m. Friday.
Nevada’s bench contributed 28 points, 24 for Vanderbilt’s bench.
The Pack had a lull in the second half before clawing back.
It was the first time Nevada had played Vanderbilt.
Former Utah State coach Ryan Odom is the coach at VCU now.

STATELINE, Nev. – The next meeting of the Nevada State Legislative Committee for the Review and Oversight of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and the Marlette Lake Water System is scheduled to be held this Friday, July 17 at 12:30 p.m. at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency office in Stateline, Nev.
The committee, comprised of eight state legislators, holds meetings every other year during interim sessions to discuss the work of TRPA, the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program, and Nevada state agencies in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
During the July meeting, speakers will provide informational presentations to the committee on water quality and lake clarity, aquatic invasive species, and the latest scientific research taking place at Tahoe.
This is the fifth of six meetings scheduled through August of this year. Other priority topics that have been heard this year include transportation, housing, forest health, and wildfire. The committee webpage has all previous meeting materials and topics listed here. Members of the public are welcome to attend in person or online and to provide input in writing or during scheduled public comment times.

NORTH LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — As temperatures climb above 100 degrees across Southern Nevada, many people are looking for ways to stay cool. But for thousands of outdoor workers, escaping the heat is not much of an option.
Construction crews across the Las Vegas valley are working through the dangerous conditions while taking precautions to protect themselves from heat-related illness.

Construction workers in Southern Nevada take precautions to stay safe in triple-digit heat
“It’s miserable. It’s the truth,” said Caitlin Johnson, a project engineer and safety officer at a construction site.
Johnson helps oversee the project and is also responsible for making sure workers stay safe while spending long hours outside in extreme heat.
“You can’t get out of it,” Johnson said. “There’s work that’s got to be done out in the heat.”
To help protect workers, Johnson said the site follows safety measures, including cooling stations required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
“OSHA makes it so easy so everyone has a basic foundation that everyone starts with, so the cooling stations are definitely OSHA required,” Johnson said.
Crews have several ways to manage the heat, including taking breaks at shaded cooling stations stocked with water and electrolytes. Workers also wear loose, long clothing to help protect themselves from the sun and adjust their schedules by starting earlier to avoid the hottest parts of the day.
Johnson said heat safety is something workers need to take seriously.
“This could be a life-and-death situation,” Johnson said. “Making sure that everyone is taking regular breaks for whatever they need, whether it’s 15 minutes, 30 minutes, because they are starting to feel the heat effects, is really important because we want everyone to go home just the way they came in.”
Johnson said workers should watch for warning signs of heat-related illness, including feeling lightheaded, dizzy, nauseous or simply not feeling well.
She also emphasized the importance of looking out for coworkers.
“When they notice someone is not doing great, they can be that voice if they are not hearing it or seeing it,” Johnson said.
As summer temperatures continue to rise, officials and safety experts remind outdoor workers to stay hydrated, take breaks when needed and speak up if they begin feeling the effects of the heat.
