No. 1 South Dakota State is looking to cap off an undefeated season by claiming its second consecutive FCS championship with a win over Montana in the FCS Championship game on Sunday afternoon.

The Jackrabbits, riding a 28-game win streak, are hoping to become just the fifth repeat champion in FCS history. Last season, they trounced North Dakota State in the championship, 45-21.

Last time out, South Dakota State drubbed fifth-seeded Albany in the semifinals, 59-0.

Montana, the No. 2 seed, enters the showdown at 13-1 after a pair of thrilling playoff victories. The Grizzlies beat Furman in overtime in the quarterfinals before outlasting North Dakota State in a double-overtime classic in the semifinals. Montana denied a potential game-tying two-point conversion to secure the win.

The Jackrabbits tout the No. 1 scoring defense in the FCS, allowing just 9.7 points per game. And they boast the third-highest scoring offense, with 38.4 points per game. That unit is led by quarterback Mark Gronowski — the MVP of last year’s championship game — and Isaiah Davis, the FCS’s leading rusher.

Quarterback Clifton McDowell anchors a versatile Montana offensive outfit. Defensively, the Grizzlies have a formidable unit, too; they allow just 16.8 points per game, the fifth-best in the FCS.
