Mass shooting at L.A. street takeover leaves 1 dead, 6 injured
A person was killed and six others were injured in a mass shooting at an illegal street takeover in Carson on Sunday, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials confirmed.
Deputies responded just before 3 a.m. to reports of gunfire near Harmon Avenue and Charles Willard Street, where authorities said an illegal street takeover was underway.
When deputies arrived, they found multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds.
One man was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other victims were transported to a hospital in critical condition, while four others sought medical treatment on their own, investigators said.
Footage of the aftermath obtained by KTLA showed a grisly and chaotic scene, with victims lying in the street suffering serious injuries from the gunfire.
A woman who witnessed the violence but asked not to be identified said the gathering had been peaceful moments before the shooting.
“Everything was so nice and then out of the blue,” she said. “It was just like a tragedy going on.”
The witness said she was standing only a few feet away when she saw the gunman approach one of the victims and begin firing.
“He started walking toward the victim and started shooting at him,” she said. “That’s when I started running, and after that I heard four more shots going on.”
She described the shooter as acting erratically during the attack.
“He’s kind of like going crazy with his hand movement, so that’s when I decided to start running,” she said.
Another woman at the scene said one of the victims was her close friend. She said she rushed toward the gunfire and tried to save him while waiting for police to arrive.
“My first instinct was to control the bleeding, feel his pulse and make sure he was still breathing,” she said. “I called 911. I was literally asking everybody to help me pick him up.”
She said two of her other friends were also struck by gunfire. One remains hospitalized and is undergoing surgery after a bullet lodged in his spine.
“A whole family lost a son who was still growing,” she said. “Nobody deserves to have their life ended at such an early age.”
Investigators have not said what led to the shooting and, as of Sunday night, no arrests had been made.
After detectives finished processing the crime scene several hours later, another vehicle arrived and began performing donuts on the same street where the shooting occurred, KTLA’s Jillian Smukler reported, underscoring the ongoing problem of illegal street takeovers despite the deadly violence that unfolded at the scene just hours earlier.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call the L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-222-8477 or leave tips online at www.lacrimestoppers.org.

LASD releases video of man shot by deputy after allegedly charging them with knife
Warning: The video included in this story contains graphic content
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has released officer-worn body camera footage of a deputy shooting a man who allegedly charged them with a knife in the Azusa area on May 20.
The shooting happened after officers responded to reports of an attempted suicide at a home on the 5500 block of North Orangecrest Avenue in an unincorporated area near Azusa around 3:30 p.m.
When deputies arrived, the man, identified as 38-year-old Dilen Flamino, allegedly charged at the nearest deputy with a 3-inch knife. Deputies were armed with a taser and 12-gauge beanbag gun, but were down the street from the deputy that Flamino is seen rushing toward in the video. The deputy called for his partners to bring in the beanbag gun, but resorted to firing his handgun at Flamino during the sudden attack.
“He’s coming up guys,” the deputy is heard saying in the video before opening fire. “Bring the stunbag! Stunbag!”
Video of the shooting shows the man writhing on the ground and tossing the knife away at the request of deputies after he was shot.
Flamino was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He was treated for his injuries. No deputies were injured in the shooting. The incident remains under investigation.
