A motorcyclist died Saturday from suspected heat exposure in California’s Death Valley National Park, and another was hospitalized as sweltering temperatures shattered records in the West over the weekend.

Officials did not release any details about the motorcyclist who died. The other motorcyclist was rushed to a Las Vegas hospital for “severe heat illness,” the park said in a statement. No details about their condition were immediately provided.

The two victims were riding through the Badwater Basin area of the park as part of a group of six motorcyclists, the park said. The other four members of the party were treated at the scene.

Temperatures at the park over the weekend hit a high of 128 F.

The scorching temperatures prevented emergency medical helicopters from responding, as the aircraft cannot generally fly safely over 120 F, officials said.

The park was under an “extreme summer heat” alert, which advises visitors to avoid hiking after 10 a.m., drink plenty of water and “travel prepared to survive.”

Park Superintendent Mike Reynolds echoed a similar warning in a statement.

“While this is a very exciting time to experience potential world record setting temperatures in Death Valley, we encourage visitors to choose their activities carefully, avoiding prolonged periods of time outside of an air-conditioned vehicle or building when temperatures are this high,” Reynolds said.

Officials warned that heat illness and injury are cumulative and can build over the course of a day or days.

“Besides not being able to cool down while riding due to high ambient air temperatures, experiencing Death Valley by motorcycle when it is this hot is further challenged by the necessary heavy safety gear worn to reduce injuries during an accident,” the park statement said.

Despite another disappointing one-run loss to the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday, there were plenty of smiles for the San Francisco Giants.

Logan Webb and Heliot Ramos were both named to the All-Star team for the first time in their careers. Webb earning his first nod comes as a surprise due to his dominance over the past few seasons, but nonetheless, it’s a well-deserved honor for one of the top pitchers in baseball.

Manager Bob Melvin was proud of the two, acknowledging how big of a deal it is. He had the following to say, according to Henry Palattella of MLB.com.

“It’s a cool day,” Melvin said. “It’s always one of those special days that’s very well-received in the clubhouse.”

Guys around the clubhouse shared their emotions with their teammates, too, all expressing how proud they were.

Webb wasn’t focused on making the All-Star Game, but did say that it’s an honor.

“It’s an honor to be able to say that I’m an All-Star,” Webb said. “I wasn’t expecting anything. I was going into it saying, ‘Whatever happens, happens.’”

If he doesn’t pitch, he’d have about 10 days off. He’s hoping that isn’t the case.

“If I don’t pitch, it’s going to be like nine or 10 days off,” he said. “I don’t know who makes that decision, but I’d love to throw in it.”

Not to take anything away from Webb, but he was expected to be an All-Star. That doesn’t mean it’s not an incredible honor, but the right-hander could win the Cy Young Award this year.

Ramos, however, came out of nowhere, and Melvin even said that no one could’ve predicted he’d be this type of player.

“I don’t know how anyone could have predicted this,” Melvin said.

Even Ramos wasn’t expecting it.

“I still can’t believe it,” Ramos said. “I’m here and I’m very grateful. I wasn’t planning on being here so it’s a blessing that it happened. I play my heart out every day; not to be an All-Star but just because I want to help the team win.”

Despite no one thinking this was something that could happen before the season started, it’s beyond deserved. Ramos is slashing .300/.372/.522 with 12 home runs and 10 doubles in 207 at-bats.

The 24-year-old has been one of the best young players in baseball and is a big reason the Giants are in their current position despite all of the injuries they’ve dealt with.

DENVER (KDVR) — The largest regional park in Arapahoe County is reopening Monday following a massive remodel that took more than a year.

Dove Valley Regional Park underwent an $18 million makeover that began in March 2023. On Monday at noon, the park will reopen.

According to the Arapahoe County Government, the 35-year-old park has doubled in size and now occupies over 90 acres.

“Upgrading the facilities and amenities in our parks will help more people spend time outdoors, stay active, and build stronger relationships with their neighbors,” said District 2 Commissioner Jessica Campbell. “By investing in our parks, we are investing in the future of our county and a healthy quality of life for our residents.”   

If you head to the new and improved park on Monday, here is what you can expect:

• Upgraded athletic fields 
• New roadway access and parking lot 
• Walking trails 
• New 165-car parking lot 
• Large playground for ages 2-12  
• New off-leash dog park 
• Outdoor fitness equipment station with stair climb overlook 
• Shade pavilion with picnic shelters 
• Sledding hill for winter months
• Refurbished restroom facilities 

Arapahoe County also said the park will have a bike park and pump track, which are expected to open later this summer.

The $18 million makeover was funded by the Arapahoe County Open Space Sales and Use Tax, which the county said helps fund and improve services in the area.

The Dove Valley Regional Park is located at 7900 S. Potomac Street Road in Centennial and is right next to the Denver Broncos training camp facility and the Centennial Airport.
