Reclaim Idaho submits 100,000 signatures
▶️ Take heed to this text now.
Dozens of cheering Reclaim Idaho volunteers turned in additional than 100,000 signatures for verification on the Idaho State Capitol on Wednesday as a part of their effort to position a $300 million schooling funding poll initiative on November’s poll.
Reclaim Idaho co-founder Luke Mayville reiterated Wednesday that he thinks the volunteer-led initiative effort has exceeded the necessities to position an initiative on the poll, which embody gathering signatures from no less than 6% of registered voters statewide (about 65,000 voters) and signatures from no less than 6% of voters in 18 totally different legislative districts.
Mayville mentioned the schooling funding initiative is important as a result of Idaho legislators aren’t offering sufficient monetary help to offer a high quality schooling to each Idaho little one.
“In latest many years, particularly within the final 20 years, the vast majority of our legislators have failed to satisfy their obligation,” Mayville instructed a crowd of volunteers and supporters. “They let Idaho sink to fiftieth out of fifty states in funding for public faculties.”
Mayville instructed the Idaho Capital Solar that county clerks have already accomplished the primary section of the signature verification course of. Based mostly on the counties’ certification, Mayville mentioned greater than 70,000 of the 100,000 signatures are legitimate and Reclaim Idaho volunteers met the 6% threshold in 20 totally different legislative districts, not simply 18.
Now, Mayville mentioned the Idaho Secretary of State’s Workplace will spend about 10 days or so conducting one other signature verification. If the secretary of state verifies the signatures and certifies the poll initiative, it should seem on Idahoans’ Nov. 8 poll, possible as Proposition 1.
There are a variety of the reason why particular person signatures wouldn’t be licensed as legitimate, together with if the one who signed isn’t a registered voter or Idaho resident, if the writing or signature on the petition is illegible or if the deal with the one who indicators writes down doesn’t precisely match the registered voter’s deal with on file with the state.
A poll initiative (like a referendum) is a type of direct democracy the place the voters of Idaho — not state legislators — will resolve whether or not or to not go Reclaim Idaho’s schooling funding initiative.
Assuming the initiative is licensed for the poll, Idaho voters will resolve whether or not to approve greater than $300 million in public faculties funding per 12 months that will probably be paid for by growing the company earnings tax charge from 6% to eight% and creating a brand new tax bracket at 10.925% for people making greater than $250,000 per 12 months or households making greater than $500,000. The schooling funding initiative doesn’t have an effect on the gross sales tax charge or property taxes.
It might take a easy majority of voters to approve the poll initiative. If it passes, People who make lower than $250,000 and households who make lower than $500,000 won’t see a tax improve.
If the initiative is accepted, the cash may go towards growing instructor pay, hiring extra academics, investing in packages similar to music, artwork, career-technical teaching programs, classroom supplies or textbooks and extra.
Reclaim Idaho is similar nonprofit, nonpartisan group behind the profitable 2018 Medicaid growth poll initiative, which handed with 60.6% of the vote.
What are the arguments for and towards the schooling poll initiative?
Some Republican legislators distinguished in schooling circles have already come out in opposition to the schooling initiative.
“My response is that it’s an enormous tax improve,” Home Training Committee Chairman Lance Clow, R-Twin Falls, instructed the Solar final 12 months.
Senate Training Committee Chairman Steven Thayn, R-Emmett, additionally got here out towards the initiative.
“Initially, I believe it’s based mostly on a false assumption that cash will enhance schooling, and that isn’t essentially the case,” Thayn beforehand instructed the Solar. “The No. 1 want in schooling isn’t extra money.”
As an alternative Thayn, who misplaced his main election in Could, mentioned he supported extra faculty selection choices, parental involvement and overhauling Idaho’s faculty funding components.
However Reclaim Idaho organizers and volunteers mentioned legislators haven’t completed sufficient to satisfy their responsibility within the Idaho Structure to offer a “common, uniform and thorough” system of free public faculties.
Retired volunteer April Frederick heard about Reclaim Idaho due to its success with increasing Medicaid eligibility. She mentioned she determined to assemble signatures to help the schooling poll initiative after reflecting on her personal schooling and deciding that each one Idaho youngsters deserve a high quality schooling. Frederick mentioned she personally gathered greater than 3,000 signatures, beginning with Fourth of July occasions in 2021 and persevering with with knocking doorways in Nampa, Kuna, Gooding, McCall, Meridian, Emmett and Twin Falls.
Frederick mentioned she encountered bipartisan help throughout the state, whatever the neighborhood she visited or occasion she attended to assemble signatures.
“Folks all over the place I went signed,” Frederick instructed the Solar. “We couldn’t gather signatures quick sufficient.”
Volunteers younger and previous gathered signatures and helped submit signatures to the state on Wednesday.
Anise Welty, a 13-year-old Reclaim Idaho volunteer who gathered signatures knocking on doorways together with her mom has participated in additional than 30 signature gathering occasions since June 2021, Mayville mentioned.
“I began as a result of I see how exhausting academics work for his or her college students,” Anise instructed a crowd of greater than 100 folks on the Capitol.
“Reclaim Idaho’s initiative will encourage academics to remain the place we want them,” Anise added.
Blanca Romero Inexperienced, the primary Latina elected to the Blaine County College Board, instructed the gang on the Capitol that pay and help for academics is so low in Idaho that she described the instructor scarcity as a disaster. Romero Inexperienced mentioned that her district has 30 unfilled educating positions that she worries will go unfilled as a result of folks can’t afford to reside in Blaine County, which incorporates the Solar Valley Resort and cities of Hailey and Ketchum, on a instructor’s wage.
Passing the schooling initiative may improve funding for faculties, which might permit districts to extend instructor pay, rent extra educators and cut back class sizes, Romero Inexperienced mentioned.
“The standard of a kid’s schooling mustn’t depend upon their ZIP code,” Romero Inexperienced mentioned.
Leah Jones, a second-grade instructor from Twin Falls, additionally spoke in favor of the schooling initiative on Wednesday. Jones mentioned Idaho instructor salaries lag salaries in neighboring states, and he or she mentioned the Nationwide Training Affiliation has completed surveys displaying 51% of Idaho academics have thought-about leaving the classroom.
Jones mentioned the dearth of funding signifies that every year she spends her personal cash shopping for faculty provides and cabinets for her classroom. One 12 months, Jones estimated she spent $4,000 of her personal cash on her classroom.
“It’s not simply concerning the wage,” Jones mentioned. “It’s concerning the lack of help within the classroom.”

Whether you’re traveling by plane, train or automobile, Idahoans are ready to travel over the Thanksgiving holiday. AAA estimates that nearly 464,000 Idahoans will celebrate the holiday somewhere at least 50 minutes from their hometown.
If you’re one of the Idahoans traveling by car, AAA says that if you want to avoid heavy traffic the best time to hit the road is in the early morning November 26-December 2. So where are Idahoans headed for the Thanksgiving holiday this year? This time around Anaheim, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Honolulu, Phoenix, San Diego, Bend, Ft. Lauderdale and Jackson are the Top 10 domestic destinations for Idahoans. Some of these cities are destinations that will keep the family busy. Others are relaxation destinations. Each of them offers something cool in their own right, but unfortunately there are several that have the dishonor of being on the list of the most “Bed Bug Infested Cities in America.”
How Dangerous are Bed Bugs?
These little blood suckers aren’t known to spread diseases like West Nile Virus or Dengue like mosquitoes do. They’re more annoying than anything else. The CDC explains that if you become a bed bug buffet overnight, you may not realize it when you wake up. Before enjoying your blood, bed bugs inject you with an anesthetic and an anticoagulant so it’s highly unlikely that the bite would wake you up or leave behind evidence that you were bleeding. A few days later, those bites may swell or become itchy like other bug bites. Bed bugs have also been linked to more serious, non-visible symptoms like insomnia and anxiety.
Why Are Bed Bugs a Travel Concern?
Well, bed bugs are sneaky travelers themselves. Their bodies are skiing and flat, which means they can creep into everything from seams of your luggage, to folds of your clothes or inside a pillowcase on the pillow you brought from home. They can go quite a while without feeding, so they’ll just hang out and wait till you unpack your belongings at home. That’s when they’ll emerge, enjoy you as a meal again and start to spread in your bedding, furniture or other areas of your home.
When you travel to areas known to have a high infestation, your risk of bringing them home rises. This list is important to check because bed bugs aren’t prejudiced. They’re just as likely to infest an upscale room at a luxury hotel as they are college dorm rooms and homeless shelters.
How Can I Tell If My Room Is Infested with Bed Bugs?
They’re tiny, so detecting them with just your eyes can be difficult. They’re also known to hide in more areas than we listed above. Cracks, crevices, indentations in headboards or behind wallpaper are also popular hiding spots for bed bugs. The most tell-tale sign that a room has a bed bug issue is rusty colored blood spots on the mattress or furniture. (And if you’re not asking questions about blood stains in your hotel room or Airbnb, we’ve got questions for you.) You may also find their molted exoskeletons or smell a sweet, musty odor.
3(ish) of Idaho’s Thanksgiving Destinations Rank Among America’s Most Bed Bug Infested Cities
Orkin releases an annual bed bug report which ranks cities based on the number of bed bug treatments they performed between December 1, 2022 and November 30, 2023. We cross referenced that with AAA’s list of most most popular Thanksgiving destinations for Idahoans and discovered that three-ish of the cities overlap.
Seattle ranks as the #4 most popular Thanksgiving destination for Idahoans this year. It also ranks #44 for bed bugs.
What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas…except for bed bugs. Vegas is the second most popular Thanksgiving destination for Idahoans and made the bed bug report for the first time. You’ll find Sin City at #35.
And finally we say “three-ish” because while Anaheim, Idaho’s #1 destination Thanksgiving 2024 doesn’t appear on the list, but nearby Los Angeles does. They’re #5 for bed bugs!
Planning a trip elsewhere? Here’s a look at Orkin’s full list to help you prepare to be on the lookout for signs of bed bug infestations when you arrive at your hotel or Airbnb.

NIC enrollment climbs after fall count
Enrollment at North Idaho College grew 15% since last fall, according to State Board of Education data.
There are 4,585 students at the college this October, up from 3,979 in 2023 and 4,296 in 2022. However, the college is still 3% down in overall enrollment from four years ago.
The growth comes as NIC fights to retain accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. The college Wednesday welcomed three new trustees, who ran on a platform of retaining accreditation and creating stability for the school.
The numbers continue a jump noted in August, after enrollment increased for the first time in more than a decade. In 2011, NIC had 6,750 total students.
The October numbers capture both full-time students, at 1,209, and part-time students at 2,898, an 18% increase. The part-time list includes high school students taking dual-credit classes. There are 478 students enrolled in career-technical programs — a 14% increase from last year, but a 22% decrease from four years ago, when 612 students took CTE courses.
Tami Haft, NIC’s dean of enrollment services, presented the enrollment data to NIC trustees Wednesday, and audience members applauded the news of enrollment increases. Haft noted that the college attracted 211 new students, a 37% rise in new student enrollment.
Here’s how NIC’s student enrollment breaks down:
- 47% of students are in programs to transfer to a four-year university.
- 38% are in dual-credit courses.
- 10% are in career-technical education.
- 5% are in non-degree programs.
