EAGLE â At a ceremony held at North Star Public Charter School in Eagle, Idaho Governor Brad Little signed House Bill 422, known as the Accelerating Public Charter Schools Act, into law.
The new legislation aims to streamline the process for the development and operational support of charter schools in Idaho. Governor Little emphasized the role of charter schools in providing diverse educational options and models, noting their significant contribution to the state’s educational landscape. He pointed out that charter schools, which now number 74 across Idaho and serve approximately 30,000 students, have seen a 30% increase in enrollment over the past five years. These institutions represent nearly 10% of all public school students in the state, with about 10,000 students currently on waitlists to attend charter schools.
House Bill 422 seeks to reduce bureaucratic hurdles for charter schools, offering greater flexibility for high-performing institutions while providing additional support for those facing challenges. This move is part of a broader strategy to promote school choice within Idaho, as outlined by Governor Little in his State of the State address earlier this year.
Idaho has been recognized for its diverse array of school choice options, including an open enrollment policy that allows parents to select the public school best suited to their child’s needs, regardless of geographical boundaries. The state has also been commended for its return on investment in educational initiatives.
Governor Little reiterated his commitment to expanding school choice in a manner that is fair, responsible, transparent, and does not detract from public school resources.
