Here’s the latest on fires burning in western Colorado
DENVER (KDVR) — Fast-moving fires in western Colorado, including on the Colorado-Utah border, continue to burn Sunday afternoon.
On the Colorado-Utah border, the Snyder Mesa Fire has burned over 28,000 acres as of Sunday morning, prompting evacuations in Mesa County, officials reported. At that time, the fire was 0% contained.
The Snyder Mesa Fire broke out sometime Friday evening or Saturday morning, according to the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit. Several fires, including the Knowles and Gore fires, combined on Saturday to form the Snyder Mesa Fire.
Three federal firefighters died and two were injured while responding to the Knowles and Gore fires on Saturday.

Ouray County has declared a state of emergency due to the Gold Mountain Fire. The fire sparked on Saturday on U.S. Forest Service land, according to the Ouray County Sheriff’s Office. The fire has triggered mandatory evacuation orders and roadway closures.
Ouray County officials reported the Gold Mountain Fire burned 560 acres as of 1:08 p.m.

The Colorado Avalanche alumni will be facing off against the Denver University hockey alumni very shortly on Aug. 23.
These two alumni teams are taking to the ice at Magness Arena at the University of Denver, marking the second annual event. The event additionally allows the Colorado Alumni Association to support numerous nonprofits through its philanthropic giving and scholarship program. Last year’s game saw the DU Alumni capture an 8-7 shootout victory over the Avs.
Franchise legends Peter Stastny, Michel Goulet and Adam Foote will be coaching the Avalanche in addition to Hockey Hall of Famer Pierre Turgeon. For the Pioneers, two-time National Champion head coach George Gwozdecky will be behind the bench alongside Joe Colborne.
Key players returning to represent the Avalanche include Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg and Milan Hejduk — while Paul Stastny, Tyler Bozak and Matt Carle are among those playing once again for the DU side.
In net for the Avs alumni squad will be 2010 Vezina Trophy winner and former goaltender Ryan Miller.
Here is a brief look at the full rosters (per NHL.com) for the gam, and some key accomplishments from some of the members as they look to represent their previous organizations once again.

Joe Sakic – Sakic currently serves as President of Hockey Operations for the Avs after having captained the Avalanche to a pair of Stanley Cup championships as a player in both 1996 and 2001.
Peter Forsberg – Hockey Hall of Famer Forsberg announced his retirement on Feb. 14, 2011. A Calder Memorial Trophy and Hart Memorial Trophy winner, Forsberg finished his NHL career with 885 points.
Milan Hejduk – Hejduk played his entire 14 year career with the Avs and is second in Colorado franchise history in games played (1,020).

Gabe Levin – For Denver, Levin was the winner of the Dr. Art Mason Memorial Award (Top Scholar-Athlete) and Dr. Ken Bredesen Award (Most Sportsmanlike Player). Levin made an instant mark at DU, appearing in 37 games during his freshman campaign in 2012-13.
Kyle Ostrow – Ostrow played for DU from 2007-10. He was voted the captain of the 2010-11 Pioneers.
Paul Stastny – Stastny actually forewent his final two seasons of eligibility with the University of Denver and signed a multi-year contract with the Avalanche. For DU, he was a junior captain and also helped lead the Pioneers to the second of back-to-back National Championships in 20024-05.

George Gwozdecky – Inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 2020, Gwozdecky is known as a hockey coaching icon at the University of Denver. He as head coach at DU for 19 seasons and compiled a 443-267-64 overall record and won NCAA titles in 2004 and 2005.

It wasn’t the most in-depth assessment offered by Colorado’s Quentin Gibson.
Still, when asked the difference between high school — where Gibson routinely put up video game numbers — and his first year in the CU football program, the second-year receiver was equally obvious and on-point.
“They move a lot faster,” Gibson said of the Division I defenders tasked with tracking him down.
The thing is, Gibson can move pretty fast, too.
Gibson showed flashes of his sizeable athletic ability last year, particularly as a returner on special teams. With some of the growing pains of adjusting to college life behind him, Gibson is vying for a role in the receiver rotation while making plans to be a more dangerous asset in the Buffaloes’ return game.
“Just take advantage of everything they give to me,” Gibson said. “Every opportunity, try to make a play. I wouldn’t say (last year) was humbling, because I wasn’t getting the ball before my senior year (of high school). When I’m not on the field, I’m able to watch the people that’s playing. Just learning from them.
“I’m going to show you all a lot more than last year. That was just a glimpse.”
By his own admission, Gibson said digesting the playbook last year was a challenge. That’s nothing out of the norm for first-year players, yet this year Gibson was challenged to learn an entirely new playbook featuring several more chapters. A year of experience has increased Gibson’s wisdom accordingly, though, and absorbing the voluminous tome that explains new offensive coordinator Brennan Marion’s Go-Go offense hasn’t been difficult so far.
“Last year, I had a little trouble with learning the plays first year in. It was hard for me,” Gibson said. “This year, coming in, it’s normal. The Go-Go offense is great. There’s about 800 plays.”
After biding his time at North Crowley (Texas) High School, Gibson flourished as a senior while helping his squad win the Class 6A state championship. Gibson recorded 181 receiving yards and three touchdowns on just seven receptions in the title game, finishing the season with 2,009 yards and 36 touchdown receptions. Gibson added a pair of rushing touchdowns, scored another on a punt return, and even threw a 74-yard touchdown in the state playoffs.
At 5-foot-9, 155 pounds, Gibson didn’t make an immediate splash with the Buffs but still teased some of that prolific versatility. Gibson ranked second in the Big 12 in overall kickoff return yards (597), though that bulk total was at least partially attributable to how many points the Buffs surrendered (thus necessitating kickoffs). More encouragingly, Gibson ranked second in the Big 12 in kickoff return average at 23.9, with a long of 46 yards.
Gibson averaged just 4.7 yards on 15 receptions (71 total yards) and added two rushing attempts for nine yards.
It was just a taste, no doubt. But Gibson plans to make a much bigger impact this season. And to help CU’s receivers make life easier for Julian Lewis, the Buffs’ talented but unproven young quarterback.
“(Lewis) is continuing to grow every day,” Marion said. “He’s still a young kid. He still has a lot of growth to do. He’s not going to be a final product year one. But he’s doing a really good job of being the same guy, consistent every day, and his teammates are respecting him for it.”
