Op-Ed: California’s carbon-offset forests aren’t trapping much carbon. Here’s how to do better
Many corporations promising “net-zero” emissions to guard the local weather are backing that declare by investing in huge swaths of forests to recapture carbon. It seems this technique isn’t working very effectively.
On paper, carbon offsets seem to stability out an organization’s carbon emissions: The corporate pays to guard timber, which take up carbon dioxide from the air, lowering the corporate’s internet affect on the local weather.
Nonetheless, our new satellite tv for pc evaluation reveals what researchers have suspected for years: Forest offsets won’t be doing a lot for the local weather.
Once we checked out satellite tv for pc monitoring of tree shares and logging exercise in California, we discovered that forest biomass isn’t rising within the state’s 37 offset undertaking websites any greater than in different areas, and timber corporations aren’t logging lower than they did earlier than corporations invested in defending that land.
The findings ship a reasonably grim message about efforts to regulate local weather change, they usually add to a rising listing of considerations about forest offsets. Research have already proven that initiatives are sometimes overcredited at the start and won’t final so long as anticipated. On this case we’re discovering a much bigger subject: an absence of actual local weather profit over the ten years of this system up to now.
However we additionally see methods to repair the issue.
In California, landowners can obtain carbon credit for conserving the inventory of timber on their property above a minimal required “baseline” stage.
Forest homeowners can then promote the carbon credit to corporations, with the concept the funding has protected timber that may in any other case be lower down. Massive oil and fuel corporations use offsets to fulfill as much as 8% of their state-mandated reductions in emissions.
California has one of many world’s largest carbon offset packages, with tens of thousands and thousands of {dollars} flowing by way of offset initiatives, and is commonly a mannequin for different international locations which might be planning new offset packages. Forest offsets and different “pure local weather options” have obtained a substantial amount of consideration from corporations, governments and nonprofits, together with in the course of the U.N. local weather convention this month in Egypt.
Offsets are taking part in a big and rising position in local weather coverage, they usually must be backed by the perfect obtainable science.
Our research used satellite tv for pc knowledge to trace forest biomass, tree harvesting charges and tree species in offset initiatives in contrast with different related forests in California.
Satellites supply a extra full document than on-the-ground reviews collected at offset initiatives. That allowed us to evaluate all of California since 1986, each earlier than and after the offset program started in 2012.
We discovered that carbon isn’t being added to biomass on these lands quicker than earlier than the initiatives started or quicker than in areas that aren’t used as offsets. Additionally, though tree biomass could also be stored above the baseline as required, timber from these lands has been closely harvested and continues to be harvested. Many offset websites are owned and operated by giant timber corporations.
In some areas, initiatives are being placed on lands with lower-value tree species that aren’t in danger from logging. For instance, at one giant timber firm within the redwood forests of northwestern California, the offset undertaking is barely 4% redwood, in contrast with 25% redwood on the remainder of the corporate’s property. The offset undertaking’s space is overgrown with tanoak, which isn’t marketable timber and doesn’t must be shielded from logging.
Our analysis factors to a set of suggestions for California to enhance its offsets protocols. That is significantly well timed because the California Air Sources Board will maintain a public workshop Wednesday to debate science, knowledge and instruments towards future amendments to the offsets protocol.
One is to start utilizing satellite tv for pc knowledge to watch forests and make sure that they’re certainly being managed to guard or retailer extra carbon. Publicly obtainable satellite tv for pc knowledge are bettering and can assist make carbon offsetting extra clear and dependable.
California can even keep away from placing offset initiatives on lands which might be already being conserved. We discovered a number of initiatives owned by conservation teams on land that already had low harvest charges.
The state may enhance its offset contract protocols to verify landowners can’t withdraw from an offset program sooner or later and lower down these timber. At present there’s a penalty for doing so, nevertheless it won’t be excessive sufficient. Landowners might be able to start a undertaking, obtain an enormous revenue from the preliminary credit and lower down the timber in 20 to 30 years — paying the penalty at the moment in {dollars} which might be prone to be value much less due to inflation.
Lastly, California ought to require offset initiatives to construct in additional of a buffer to account for the warming local weather. The state requires solely 2% or 4% of carbon credit be put aside in an insurance coverage pool in opposition to wildfires, despite the fact that a number of initiatives have been broken by latest fires. The pool could quickly be depleted as yearly burned space will increase in a warming local weather. The insurance coverage pool should be giant sufficient to cowl the worsening droughts, wildfires and illness and beetle infestations.
As soon as they’ve a clear-eyed view of how forest offsets work — or don’t — coverage makers ought to think about investing in different climate-mitigation measures, like photo voltaic and electrification initiatives in low-income city areas. Such investments could present cheaper, dependable and simply outcomes.
With out enhancements to the present system, we could also be underestimating our internet emissions, contributing to the earnings of huge emitters and landowners, and distracting from the true options of transitioning to a clean-energy economic system.

Caitlyn Jenner says she'd 'destroy' Kamala Harris in hypothetical race to be CA gov
SAN FRANCISCO – Caitlyn Jenner, the gold-medal Olympian-turned reality TV personality, is considering another run for Governor of California. This time, she says, if she were to go up against Vice President Kamala Harris, she would “destroy her.”
Jenner, who publicly came out as transgender nearly 10 years ago, made a foray into politics when she ran as a Republican during the recall election that attempted to unseat Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2021. Jenner only received one percent of the vote and was not considered a serious candidate.
Jenner posted this week on social media that she’s having conversations with “many people” and hopes to have an announcement soon about whether she will run.

She has also posted in Trumpian-style all caps: “MAKE CA GREAT AGAIN!”
As for VP Harris, she has not indicated any future plans for when she leaves office. However, a recent poll suggests Harris would have a sizable advantage should she decide to run in 2026. At that point, Newsom cannot run again because of term limits.
If Jenner decides to run and wins, it would mark the nation and state’s first transgender governor.

Northern California 6-year-old, parents hailed as heroes for saving woman who crashed into canal
LIVE OAK — A six-year-old and her parents are being called heroes by a Northern California community for jumping into a canal to save a 75-year-old woman who drove off the road.
It happened on Larkin Road near Paseo Avenue in the Sutter County community of Live Oak on Monday.
“I just about lost her, but I didn’t,” said Terry Carpenter, husband of the woman who was rescued. “We got more chances.”
Terry said his wife of 33 years, Robin Carpenter, is the love of his life and soulmate. He is grateful he has been granted more time to spend with her after she survived her car crashing off a two-lane road and overturning into a canal.
“She’s doing really well,” Terry said. “No broken bones, praise the Lord.”
It is what some call a miracle that could have had a much different outcome without a family of good Samaritans.
“Her lips were purple,” said Ashley Martin, who helped rescue the woman. “There wasn’t a breath at all. I was scared.”
Martin and her husband, Cyle Johnson, are being hailed heroes by the Live Oak community for jumping into the canal, cutting Robin out of her seat belt and pulling her head above water until first responders arrived.
“She was literally submerged underwater,” Martin said. “She had a back brace on. Apparently, she just had back surgery. So, I grabbed her brace from down below and I flipped her upward just in a quick motion to get her out of that water.”
The couple said the real hero was their six-year-old daughter, Cayleigh Johnson.
“It was scary,” Cayleigh said. “So the car was going like this, and it just went boom, right into the ditch.”
Cayleigh was playing outside and screamed for her parents who were inside the house near the canal.
I spoke with Robin from her hospital bed over the phone who told us she is in a lot of pain but grateful.
“The thing I can remember is I started falling asleep and then I was going over the bump and I went into the ditch and that’s all I remember,” Robin said.
It was a split-second decision for a family who firefighters said helped save a stranger’s life.
“It’s pretty unique that someone would jump in and help somebody that they don’t even know,” said Battalion Chief for Sutter County Fire Richard Epperson.
Robin is hopeful that she will be released from the hospital on Wednesday in time to be home for Thanksgiving.
“She gets Thanksgiving and Christmas now with her family and grandkids,” Martin said.
Terry and Robin are looking forward to eventually meeting the family who helped save Robin’s life. The family expressed the same feelings about meeting the woman they helped when she is out of the hospital.
“I can’t wait for my baby to get home,” Terry said.
