2 men near Oprah's Hawaii ranch arrested on suspicion of illegal hunting

Two 19-year-old men arrested on a public road in Hawaii that runs through Oprah Winfrey’s property on the island of Maui last month were suspected of illegal hunting, officials said Monday.

The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) identified the men as Luke Allen and Ty Munoz, both of Upcountry Maui.

Conservation officers stopped Allen and Munoz just before midnight on June 21 after witnessing them allegedly using a spotlight for hunting purposes, according to the state agency. The suspects were found near the intersection of Thompson Road and Kamaʻole Road, in the Kula area of Upcountry Maui, authorities said.

The public road runs through private property owned by the Oprah Winfrey Ranch. Winfrey reportedly owns nearly 1,000 acres on the island.

“Last month, DLNR reached out to Upcountry ranchers regarding their efforts to prevent illegal poaching throughout the area and we agreed to cooperate,” Winfrey’s production company, Harpo, told The Associated Press in an emailed statement on Monday. “The arrests did not happen on the property.”

Both men were arrested on suspicion of hunting on private lands without permission, not having a hunting license, hunting with the use of an artificial light and other violations. Allen was also arrested for an unregistered semi-automatic rifle.

Mother, two toddlers identified in fatal Morgan County off-road vehicle crash

A 22-year-old mother and her two young children were killed in a crash between an off-road vehicle and a pickup in Morgan County on Wednesday.

Destiny Mena and her sons Benjamin and Isaiah were passengers in a Polaris RZR that ran a stop sign and crashed into a pickup truck about 3:30 p.m Wednesday at the intersection of County Road C and County Road 31, 20 miles south of Brush.

Mena, Benjamin, Isaiah and the 22-year-old driver, who has not been identified, all died in the crash. The pickup driver was seriously injured, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Mena and her sons were identified in a verified GoFundMe created to raise money for their funeral expenses. State Patrol officials said one of the boys was 2 years old and the other was 1 year old.

“Our family is trying to wrap our heads around this sudden and shocking loss, we are asking for support to cover funeral costs and lessen the financial burden of not only having to lay one loved one to rest but three,” organizer James Medina wrote on the page.

USA Today just named this San Diego dog park best in the nation

Fiesta Island Dog Park has been recognized as the nation’s best dog park for the second time as part of USA Today’s annual “10Best” Readers’ Choice Awards.

The 90-acre park on Mission Bay, which was first honored in 2016, is home to an extensive off-leash area, trails and a beach. USA Today described the space as “perfect for an evening on the beach with the pooch.”

Nominees were submitted by a panel of experts and voted by USA Today readers. The top three were rounded out by Newtown Dream Dog Park in Johns Creek, Ga., and Minto-Brown Island Park in Salem, Ore. Fiesta Island was the only park in California that received a top-10 finish.

The park is maintained by Fiesta Island Dog Owners, or FIDO, a non-profit group responsible for clean-up events, pet ownership advocacy and collaboration with authorities. The organization hosts 16,000 members, who were encouraged to vote for the park, according to their website.

Board member Kathy Parrish said in a press release that the first-place finish is a testament to the “hard work” and “passion” community and board members put into the park.

“This honor will further inspire us to continue our efforts in maintaining and improving this cherished space,” Parrish said.
