Padres acquiring White Sox pitcher Dylan Cease: reports
Pitcher Dylan Cease’s name has been linked to trade rumors for quite some time.
On Wednesday, ESPN reported the long-awaited trade for the right-handed pitcher had been finalized.
Cease, who has spent his entire major league career with the Chicago White Sox, is expected to join the San Diego Padres.
The White Sox will receive multiple prospects in exchange for Cease, according to multiple reports. Cease, 28, had somewhat of a disappointing season in 2023, finishing with a 4.58 ERA after receiving the second most AL Cy Young Award votes in 2022.

However, Cease has performed well during spring training this year. His ERA sits at 2.16.

He is one of just five pitchers to log 200 strikeouts each of the past three seasons. Gerrit Cole, Kevin Gausman, Aaron Nola and Corbin Burnes are the others.

Chicago is coming off a down year, finishing 2023 with a 61-101 record. The team made several notable front office changes, including promoting assistant general manager Chris Getz to lead the franchise’s baseball operations.

Cease will likely be one of the top pitchers in the Padres starting rotation, alongside Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove.
The Padres open the 2024 MLB season later this month with a two-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Seoul, South Korea.

Tennis star mocks jeering crowd with provocative dance after Australian Open victory
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
An Australian Open match quickly turned personal for Yulia Putintseva.
The Kazakh went against Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey, who apparently had the home crowd by her side.
Much of the crowd was filled with Turkish flags for the match, but the fans went home disappointed after Putintseva earned a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory.

Upon jeers from the crowd following the win, Putintseva cupped her hand to her ear to mock the fans, resulting in loud boos.
After shaking hands with Sonmez, she then danced provocatively near her bench.
“Honestly, it was a really crazy atmosphere here. Look at them (Turkish fans). They’re very passionate about what they’re doing. It’s very great to see, especially against me, because I love this kind of battle.”
While her comments on the fans were in good spirits, she took a shot at the fans off the court after claiming they had been disrespectful.

EX-AMERICAN TENNIS STARS RIP REPORTER OVER QUESTION TO AMANDA ANISIMOVA
“What can I do? It’s just some people have education of tennis and, unfortunately, some of them not,” she told reporters, via the New York Post. “But I’m very happy that I kept my calm, because Yulia last year would probably throw something at them.”
Putintseva’s best world ranking is 20th, which she earned last year. This is the furthest she has advanced at the Australian Open. She has also reached the quarterfinals of both the French Open and the U.S. Open. She has three WTA titles to her name.

Trinity Rodman becomes NWSL’s highest-paid player after she re-signs with Washington Spirit
Trinity Rodman has re-signed with the Washington Spirit, ending a months-long saga that led the NWSL to adjust its salary cap rules in order to retain one of its biggest stars.
Financial details of the three-year contract weren’t released, but ESPN reports that the deal is worth more than $2 million annually, including bonuses, making Rodman the highest-paid athlete in NWSL history.
In a news release, the Spirit described the deal as “one of the most significant contracts in the NWSL and the women’s game worldwide.”
“I think I’ve always had a vision and an idea of what I wanted my legacy to be,” Rodman said at an event announcing her new deal Thursday at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. “And for me, we’re doing that and I’m so grateful for that.”
Rodman is currently training with the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team in Carson. At age 18, she was selected No. 2 overall by Washington in the 2021 draft. Rodman went on to win the league’s rookie of the year award and record the game-winning assist in extra time during the NWSL championship game that season.
In 2024 and 2025, Rodman helped the Spirit return to the championship game.
“Getting drafted here and developing and maturing and learning — and failing — at the Spirit, in D.C., it’s become so much of my legacy and my story,” Rodman said. “But on top of that, I still feel like there’s so much more I have to give and so much more that I want to do.”
Rodman’s initial contract with Washington expired on Dec. 31, making her a free agent. A gold medal winner for the United States at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Rodman was rumored to be getting interest from European teams that don’t have the same salary restrictions.
“I can’t think of the Washington Spirit without her,” Spirit owner Michele Kang said at Thursday’s event in L.A. “And I hope she can’t think about her career without the Washington Spirit. So this is really monumental and it was really important, not only for the Spirit, especially for our fans who expect to see her. They come to Audi Field and that’s where Rowdy Audi clearly came out.”
Lakers legend Magic Johnson, a minority stakeholder in the Spirit, called Rodman’s re-signing a “big win for the entire National Women’s Soccer League!”
“Michele and the Spirit leadership spoke about the vision for the franchise, creating sustainable success, implementing innovation and being a standard bearer for women’s sports,” Johnson wrote on X following Thursday’s event. “Keeping Trinity as a Spirit player was a big step to fulfilling that vision. I want to congratulate the entire Spirit organization for getting the deal done! I know our incredible fan base is as excited as I am.”
Rodman and the Spirit had previously reached an agreement on a four-year, multimillion-dollar contract in early December. That deal was rejected by the NWSL as being against the spirit of the league’s salary cap, which is set at $3.5 million for each team for the 2026 season and will rise each year until hitting $5.1 million in 2030.
The NWSL Players Assn. filed a grievance against the league for nixing the contract agreement, alleging that the move violated the collective bargaining agreement.
Weeks later, the league adopted a “High Impact Player” rule allowing teams to spend up to $1 million over the salary cap for star players that meet certain criteria. The union also has filed a grievance over that rule, claiming that the league is not allowed to “unilaterally create a new pay structure.”
Spirit president of soccer operations Haley Carter says the “High Impact Player” rule figured into Rodman’s new contract and that neither NWSLPA grievance would alter the deal.

Urban Meyer tabs Rutgers as next program to match Indiana’s improbable CFP run
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
Indiana football claimed the school’s first-ever national championship earlier this week. The Hoosiers’ stunning rise has sparked questions about which program could be next.
Urban Meyer, who coached Florida and Ohio State to national championships, made his pick. The college football studio analyst believes Rutgers could be the next program to take the sport by storm, saying the Scarlet Knights are in prime position to become the “next Indiana.”
“Give me three programs that could be the next Indiana, meaning teams that are used to losing, have really bad records and can somehow rise from the ashes to become national champion,” Meyer said on “3 and Out,” a podcast Meyer co-hosts alongside Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram II and Rob Stone.

The Hoosiers’ rise from college football’s most loss-laden program to dominance started last season, when Curt Cignetti arrived in Bloomington and coached Indiana to its first playoff appearance.
Indiana was defeated in the first round by last year’s eventual national champion runner-up Notre Dame. But the latest edition of the playoffs was a much different story. Indiana dominated Alabama in the Rose Bowl before soundly defeating Oregon in the semifinals.
The Hoosiers then outlasted Miami in this past Monday’s title game to secure a 16-0 record and claim the national championship trophy.

Meyer worked with Rutgers coach Greg Schiano at Ohio State, with the current Rutgers head coach serving as the Buckeyes’ defensive coordinator for three seasons. In addition to the Scarlet Knights, Meyer also named Rice and Wake Forest as programs that could go from among the worst teams to the best.
INDIANA’S CFP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: A HISTORIC RUN BY THE NUMBERS
“I have no idea about Rice, no idea about Wake, but I’m going to throw them out there because if Indiana can, they can,” Meyer added. “But I will say Rutgers because Greg Schiano — who I’m biased; he’s a great friend and a great football coach — he had him in the top five in the country at one point in (2006).”

Rutgers got off to a 9-0 start in the 2006 season and surged to No. 7 in the AP Top 25. After winning the Texas Bowl, the Scarlet Knights finished the season ranked No. 12.
Rutgers ended its most recent season with a 5-7 record. The school’s 708 defeats currently rank third on college football’s all-time list. Despite recent success, Indiana still leads college football’s all-time losses list. Rutgers is scheduled to play Indiana in 2026.
