A Texas man was arrested after police say he attacked another man with a machete-type knife during a traffic quarrel.

Michael Martin Ochwat, 66, was arrested Wednesday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, the New Braunfels Police Department wrote on Facebook.

When officers arrived, they found a 55-year-old male victim who had suffered a slash wound to his upper body.

Paramedics were called to the scene and provided immediate medical attention before transporting the victim to a hospital in serious but stable condition. The victim has since been released from the hospital.

The preliminary investigation indicates the victim was involved in a dispute with another driver as they were both in their vehicles. Both drivers exited their vehicles when the suspect, who has since been identified as Ochwat, confronted the victim with a machete-type knife.

Jocelyn Nungaray was sexually assaulted before alleged murder by illegal immigrants, family says

Published

on

Jocelyn Nungaray, the 12-year-old girl allegedly killed by illegal immigrants in Texas, was sexually assaulted before being strangled, according to her family and recent forensic tests.

Nungaray’s family confirmed to FOX 26 Houston on Tuesday that she was sexually assaulted before she was killed.

Two Venezuelan nationals – 21-year-old Johan Jose Martinez-Rangel and 26-year-old Franklin Jose Peña Ramos – are charged with capital murder in connection with her death. The two men crossed illegally into the U.S. earlier this year.

Both suspects are accused of luring her under a bridge, strangling her and leaving her for dead in a creek.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office received the lab results in connection with the investigation into Nungaray’s death.

While the test results show she appeared to have been sexually assaulted, as semen was found on her, the DNA match has not come back yet, a source close to the investigation told Fox News.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement to Fox News it will have “no comment on the evidence in this case until the appropriate time.” The Houston Forensic Science Center declined to provide details.

The family now awaits the court’s acknowledgment of the new evidence, and seeks a revoked bond as they look for justice in Nungaray’s death.

Her grandfather, Kelvin Alvarenga, told FOX 26 that it is going to be nearly impossible for the family to “get rid of this feeling of loss.”

If the suspects are found guilty of sexual assault, they would be eligible for the death penalty, which Nungaray’s family opposes because they would rather the suspects sit with what they did for the rest of their lives.

“I want them to remember Jocy the rest of their life,” Melfri Vargas, Alvarenga’s wife, told FOX 26. “I want, every time they go to sleep, they remember what they did and show the others you don’t mess with our child, you don’t mess with the United States, you don’t mess with Texas.”

With the suspects in this case being two illegal immigrants, the little girl’s death has sparked political discourse over U.S. immigration policy.

“I want them not to just use my granddaughter as a political base, but to know her name is Jocelyn Nungaray,” Alvarenga told FOX 26. “We just want to make a difference for Jocy. We don’t want Jocy’s memory or name to be easily forgotten.”

Alvarenga would like the individuals responsible for Nungaray’s death to face life without parole, stressing the importance of them being reminded every day of what they did to the girl.

“I rather for them to remember this in general population,” he said. “Life without parole, that way they can remember every night when they go to bed, the horrific deal that they did to our family.”

Her family said they are grateful for the support they have received from city and state leaders, and former President Trump.

“God bless him, because at the telling of the day, I wouldn’t want my daughter’s accident to go as another statistic for the city of Houston or the state of Texas. With former President Trump reaching out, my blessings to him and God bless him,” Alvarenga said.

Nungaray’s mother, Alexis, has been struggling in the aftermath of her daughter’s death, family told FOX 26. Nungaray also had a 5-year-old brother who the family said asks for his sister every day and wishes to be with her.

“She’s a single mom and one of the hardest things for her and us to explain to a 5-year-old that his Cici will not be at home anymore,” Vargas said. “He asks when is he going to see Cici. We try to explain the best way we can to a little one. It’s not an easy thing to do. He always asks for her, he wants to go see her.”

The two suspects are due back in court in September.

Oklahoma schools chief spars with CNN host over teaching the Bible in classrooms in heated interview

Published

on

Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters defended a new mandate requiring the Bible to be incorporated into classroom lessons during a heated clash on CNN on Tuesday.

“The Bible includes beheading, rape and incest,” CNN host Pamela Brown said to Walters at the start of the interview. “Do you support teaching children about those topics?”

Walters did not directly address Brown’s question, but explained that referencing the Bible was necessary to understand historical documents and important events in our nation’s history, from its founding to the Civil Rights movement.

“It had a profound influence on American history. It was the best-selling book in American history. To not teach that in the classroom is academic malpractice,” he told Brown.

Oklahoma Schools Chief Ryan Walters debated CNN’s Pamela Brown on the Bible being taught in Oklahoma public schools on CNN on Tuesday.

The two sparred as Brown continued to press him to answer if the more graphic elements in the Bible were acceptable in the classroom.

“Will you allow teachers to teach all aspects of the Bible? How are teachers supposed to know what of the Bible to teach and what not to teach? It’s a simple question,” she asked again, before referencing the conservative figure’s fight to eradicate pornographic books from school classrooms and libraries.

“Let me be crystal clear: The Bible is not on the same plane as ‘Gender Queer’ and ‘Flamer,’ Walters retorted. “These are pornography.”

“We have academic standards that tell our teachers that you are to talk about the Bible in reference to the Mayflower Compact, letters from a Birmingham Jail, the Declaration of Independence,” he continued. “It‘s very clear from primary sources that these individuals referenced in our history, they referenced the Bible. So, look, when it‘s historically accurate, we’re absolutely going to include that. I mean, think about how absurd it would be to teach about the Pilgrims if you don‘t mention their intention for moving to the New World? It‘s crucial and we‘re not going to allow the radical Left to continue to push a false history on our kids that said that faith played no role. Well, just read the history. It’s clearly there.”

Brown continued to push back on Walters’ arguments, offering counterpoints to his stance on the influence of the Bible and Christianity on the founding of America.

“We should note… God is not mentioned in the Constitution. It is mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, but not a Christian God, right, and it also says that all men are created equal. And one would argue it‘s not creating a stature of, ‘If you‘re a Christian, if you believe in the Bible, you are of a higher stature,’” she responded.

Walters maintained his argument and told the CNN host, “People can be offended by that, they may not like it, but they can’t rewrite our history.”

“To censor the Bible out of our schools is to create our schools to be state-sponsored atheist centers,” he continued. “Our position is purely historical.”

The new directive from the top education official requires all public schools in Oklahoma to add the Bible and the Ten Commandments as “instructional support into the curriculum across specified grade levels.” The religious text will be referenced as appropriate in the study of “history, civilization, ethics, comparative religion…as well as for their substantial influence on our nation’s founders and the foundational principles of our Constitution,” the memo states.

Walters said in the memo that his directive aligns with educational standards approved in May 2019.

Although Louisiana Republican Gov. Jeff Landry signed a bill into law last week requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every classroom by 2025, Walters says Oklahoma is the first state to require the Bible be used in all classrooms, effective immediately.
