BRUNSWICK COUNTY, Va. — Authorities are investigating after a body was discovered Tuesday along Route 1 in Brunswick County near the Mecklenburg County line.

The Brunswick Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene after receiving a 911 call at approximately 6:48 a.m.

The body was found just two feet off the roadway with no apparent attempt to conceal it, according to investigators.

Officials described the deceased as a white male, estimated to be in his late 40s or early 50s, with brown hair and a mustache.

The body was found naked and had visible scratches, though investigators noted there were no obvious signs of trauma such as gunshot or knife wounds.

Investigators reported no identifying marks or tattoos were present on the body.

The man’s remains have been transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond for identification and to determine the cause of death.

The Mountaineers made their biggest leap in Baseball America College Baseball Top 25 rankings, jumping six spots to No. 8 and five places in Perfect Game top 25 to fourth, while moving one notch to No. 16 in D1Baseball to 16th and No. 13 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, and stayed put at No. 10 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

West Virginia lost its first midweek game of the season after traveling to Penn State and falling 3-2, but kept its Big 12 Conference winning streak alive, extending it to 14, following a three-game sweep of UCF.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) – Virginia State Police is investigating a three-vehicle crash that killed one driver in Shenandoah County on Friday at 8:35 a.m. on John Marshall Highway, two-tenths of a mile east of Back Road.

A 2011 Ford F-250 was traveling east on John Marshall Highway when it crossed a double solid yellow centerline, sideswiped a westbound 2010 Subaru Outback, and collided head-on with a westbound 2022 Toyota Camry, according to VSP.

VSP said the driver of the Toyota, 28-year-old Alysia M. Coffelt, of Strasburg, Virginia, died at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Ford, 44-year-old, Roy J. Mongold Jr., of Fisher, West Virginia, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Winchester Medical Center for treatment. He was not wearing a seatbelt, VSP said.

The driver of the Subaru, a 24-year-old woman from Charlottesville, Virginia, and an adult female passenger were not injured. Both were wearing seatbelts.

VSP added that charges are pending as the crash remains under investigation.
