Tall Ships begin historic Boston parade of sails

ABOARD THE BARCHETTA – In a prelude to history, the Tall Ships are assembling in Boston Harbor as The Eagle leads today’s flotilla to meet Old Ironsides.

It’s a day the city won’t soon forget with small boats darting in toward the majestic U.S. Coast Guard ship to snap a watery selfie.

A cool breeze is carrying the ships toward Castle Island for the parade. We’re tailing them all. I’m with Herald staff photographer Stuart Cahill as we follow the pride of nations to the docks.

A flyover is imminent as you witness the choreography planned years ahead come to life.

To our aft is the Mayflower II as it approaches Castle Island. A city tug boats nudged it into place and peeled away to shower the parade in a stream of water from its cannon.

Our past and future is forever tied to this Harbor and it is a fitting tribute today to that economic lifeline. We’re now passing Castle Island!

Two fighter jets just blasted over with the USS Constitution firing off its guns. Amazing!

Another Red Sox player sidelined as clubhouse bug makes its way around

Earlier this week Willson Contreras left a game early and missed the next two after coming down with an illness that left him feverish and feeling dizzy.

That bug appears to be working its way around the Red Sox clubhouse and is now affecting another lineup regular.

Masataka Yoshida is set to miss his second consecutive game due to illness, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy confirmed Sunday. Yoshida was not at the ballpark on Saturday, and while he did return on Sunday he wasn’t yet fit to play.

“He’s under the weather, we’ve got some of that stuff going around,” Tracy said. “Yesterday spent the day away from the field, similar to Willson he’s back in the building today, fever is gone, some symptoms have resolved but similarly he’ll probably do some work but we’ll see how he feels as he goes, I’m sure he’s still feeling it a little bit.”

Since starting the season primarily as a bench player due to a lineup logjam in the outfield and at designated hitter, Yoshida has gotten everyday playing time since the New York Mets series just prior to the All-Star break. During that stretch Yoshida has batted .306 with three home runs, 14 RBI, an .884 OPS and more walks (8) than strikeouts (5).

“He’s been incredible,” Tracy said. “The guy can really hit, we know that, he can go through his spurts but when he gets on a spurt, on a good one, it just seems like every ball is hit hard. The other day he hit five balls hard, four of them were barreled, I mean, he’s been swinging it.”

It’s been an impressive return to form for a player who has struggled to get regular playing time throughout his time in Boston, first due to injury and more recently due to the club’s roster make-up. Earlier in the season Yoshida was frequently asked about his role and whether or not he might like to be traded to a club where he’d have a clearer path to play, and despite having every reason to be upset he never demanded a trade or complained about his situation.

“He’s been a pro. At the time in that situation he knew his role was to be ready to go and come off the bench and take big at bats in pinch hit spots and at the time he was actually doing that fairly well too,” Tracy said. “I think the roster always dictates the situation, Masa since I’ve known him is the ultimate pro and he’s going to do whatever he feels like needs to be done to help the team.”

Abreu back, Durbin off

In addition to Yoshida, Caleb Durbin was also absent from Sunday’s lineup, with Anthony Seigler slated to start at third base in his place. Tracy said Durbin isn’t sick and that this was a scheduled day off to give him a rest amid the ongoing 16-day stretch without an off day.

“Durbin is just a day. That’s part of the guys that we’ve been kind of running into the ground and you’re going through this stretch and you feel like hot day game one of those guys I need to get off their feet,” Tracy said. “At some point during the road trip I have to tend to (Ceddanne Rafaela) and (Andruw Monasterio) too, but Durbin’s been grinding hard and I felt like today was the way to do it.”

Wilyer Abreu did return to the Red Sox lineup after missing Saturday due to lingering soreness from fouling a ball off his leg.

Upcoming starters

Tracy confirmed that the Red Sox will slightly reshuffle their starting rotation for the upcoming series in Toronto, starting with Sonny Gray on Monday, Patrick Sandoval on Tuesday, Ranger Suarez on Wednesday and Payton Tolle on Thursday. Jake Bennett will be lined up to start Friday’s series opener in Pittsburgh.

“This (bullpen) day today allows up to keep Gray on line, gives the two kids the six-day, which is what we want, and gives Sandy a seven-day which isn’t a bad thing for him either,” Tracy said. “All of the stuff we talked about managing during this 16-gamer.”

Rutschman feeling good

Adley Rutschman is scheduled to lead off as the designated hitter for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday. Tracy said all of the reports out of his first game with the WooSox on Saturday were good and the plan now is to see how he feels coming out of the weekend before deciding whether or not he’ll be ready to join the big league team.

“We’ll have to talk to him and see,” Tracy said. “He’s scheduled to DH today and I think he’ll probably lead off so he’ll probably get at least three more at bats, and we’ll see how he feels.”
