Suspect in West Virginia double murder found dead in Ohio motel

BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio — A suspect in a double murder in Vienna, West Virginia on Friday afternoon was found dead inside a motel room in Bellefontaine, Ohio early Saturday morning, officials say.

The U.S. Marshal’s Service and members of their Task Force contacted the Bellefontaine Police Department just before midnight Friday about a homicide suspect who was possibly in the Bellefontaine area, according to WHIO.

The suspect was believed to have killed two people in Wood County, Virginia. According to the news outlet, they left the area in a stolen car. The U.S. Marshal’s Service was able to track down the vehicle at the Comfort Inn on Northview Drive.

The U.S. Marshal and their Task Force and the Bellefontaine Police Special Response Team worked to secure the motel as well as evacuate rooms by the alleged suspect’s room, according to WHIO.

Officers attempted to speak with the suspect when they heard a single gunshot was heard from inside the room. Eventually, officers entered the room and found the suspect dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to the news outlet, the suspect’s identity has not been released due to next of kin notification.

The suspect was wanted in connection with a double murder in Vienna, West Virginia Friday afternoon.

Vienna Police Department said, just before 5 p.m. officers were called out to 1003 38th Street. Two people were found dead with apparent gunshot wounds inside the house. A family member had found them and contacted the police.

Police identified the two as Thomas J. Platt, 45, and Christy L. Roseberry, 43. Investigators were able to determine a suspect after obtaining a search warrant, speaking with witnesses and gathering other information.

“Vienna Police gathered information on the suspect and contacted surrounding law enforcement agencies to apprise them of the ongoing investigation and to be on the lookout. Vienna Police quickly received assistance from the United States Marshals, who arrived at Vienna PD Headquarters and assisted with gathering information on the possible whereabouts of the suspect,” police said.

Vienna Police Department confirmed that the suspect was found in Ohio just after 2 a.m. Saturday morning dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Major broadband funding to benefit rural Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (WDBJ) – July has been a big month for the effort to deliver universal broadband in Virginia.

Recent announcements from the state and federal governments promise major funding to complete the job.

Last week, the state awarded more than $40 million from the Virginia Telecommunications Initiative for 10 different projects serving 20 localities.

And the Biden administration approved Virginia’s initial proposal for more than $1.4 billion under the Broadband Equity Access and Deployment Program.

“We are getting very close,” Gov. Glenn Youngkin told WDBJ7 in an interview Monday morning.

With the latest BEAD funding, Youngkin said the goal of bringing reliable high-speed internet to all Virginians is within reach.

“This is part of ‘the Virginia way,’ which is to make sure that everybody has full access to educational opportunities, to job opportunities and of course to life,” Youngkin said. “And the internet is incredibly important.”

Several localities in western Virginia applied for the latest VATI grants. And at least three in our area, Botetourt, Franklin and Rockbridge counties, received awards.

“We’ve got a lot of hand-climb poles, a lot of rock, a lot of terrain challenges, so yes we were very, very happy,” said Rockbridge County Administrator Spencer Suter Monday afternoon.

Suter said the VATI awards were especially sweet after unsuccessful applications in 2022 and 2023.

And he said the county hopes to benefit from the BEAD funding in the future.

“I would like for folks to know that we have never quit, and we won’t quit and we’re going to keep pushing until everybody has access to quality broadband,” Suter said.

The latest round of federal funding flows from the Biden administration’s infrastructure law that passed with bipartisan support almost three years ago.

The next step is to identify all of the remaining locations that lack access and are not part of any other broadband project.

The state hopes to begin accepting applications from service providers later this year.

Boston College Football 2024 Opponent Preview: Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech fans have high hopes for the 2024 campaign. All college football fans know, there are few better environments in the country than Lane Stadium. Coach Pry will look to bring the Hokies back to the top of the ACC standings in his 3rd season.

When: Thursday, October 17th, 2024 @ 7:30pm

Where: Blacksburg, VA

Last Season (7-6 overall, 5-3 in ACC)

Virginia Tech finished above .500 last year for their first time since 2019. They ended the season with a win in the Military Bowl against #23 Tulane, which gave them their first bowl game win since 2016. The Hokies haven’t been relevant in the ACC since that 2016 season. Hopefully, they will build off last year’s momentum and become a contender once again. According to Bill Connelly of ESPN, Virginia Tech is ranked #1 (95%) in returning offensive production percentage and #12 (77%) in their defensive production percentage.

Departing Players

As mentioned above, the Hokies coaching staff did a great job of retaining talent. In this NIL era, that is no small feat. Some key losses from the Hokies roster are Bryce Duke, Dae’quan Wright, and Da’Wain Lofton. On the defensive side of the football, Derrick Canteen, the Hokies number 3 cornerback, will not be returning to Blacksburg. There were also zero Hokies drafted in this years’ NFL Draft.

This Year

Coach Pry and the Hokies will lean on Quarterback Kyron Drones. Drones established himself as one of the best dual-threat Quarterbacks in the country last season throwing for 2,085 yards and 17 touchdowns while rushing for 818 with 5 scores. Drones torched Boston College in 2023 throwing for 218 yards and 2 touchdowns while also adding 135 yards on the ground.

Drones will have weapons at his disposal. The entire offensive line is returning along with All-ACC Third team running back Bhayshul Tuten. Drones’ top 4 receiving targets, Ali Jennings, Stephen Gosnell, Da’quan Felton, and Jaylin Lane, will also be back in Blacksburg. The Hokies are poised for a solid campaign in 2024, if they can capitalize on the momentum the gained from last season.
