A teenager was killed in a shooting at a racetrack in South Carolina Saturday night, officials said.

At about 8:30 p.m., the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office said there was “a heavy law enforcement presence” at Ware Shoals Dragway following a shooting. That’s at 16924 U.S. 25 in Ware Shoals.

According to the Laurens County Coroner’s Office, 17-year-old Greenwood resident Calvin Lamont Parker Jr. died from the injuries he suffered “as a result of this incident,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday, WSPA reported.

No other injuries were reported.

Although the sheriff’s office said it believed the shooting was an isolated incident, and there was not a threat to the community, it did ask people to avoid the area following Saturday night’s gunfire.

The Best of Both Worlds car & bike show was being held at Ware Shoals Dragway on Saturday, according to the venue’s Facebook page.

There was no word about a shooter or shooters, or anyone else involved in the gunfire. Information about a motive for the shooting was not available.

No arrests have been reported by the sheriff’s office, which is continuing to investigate the shooting.

A Poor Outing For Zander Sechrist

Tennessee baseball needed a strong outing from starting pitcher Zander Sechrist after exhausting a good chunk of its reliable bullpen arms int he first two games of the weekend series.

Things couldn’t have started better for Sechrist as the left-handed pitcher struck out the first two Vanderbilt batters he faced.

But things went poorly from there for the left-handed pitcher. RJ Austin gave Vanderbilt a two-out baserunner with a single to right field and then Alan Espinal took Sechrist deep for a two-run homer an at-bat later.

Vanderbilt added another run in the second inning when a Jonathan Vastine blooper dropped in right field for a two-out RBI single.

Tennessee went to the bullpen to open the third inning making it a three-run, two inning outing for Sechrist. The lack of offensive production compounded the issue but it was still a poor outing for Sechrist.

JD Thompson Tosses A Gem For Vanderbilt

Sunday’s matchup was the only game that Vanderbilt didn’t announce its starting pitcher before the series. But JD Thompson one upped already strong outings from Bryce Cunningham and Carter Holton the first two games of the weekend series.

The left-handed pitcher came out dialed in striking out the side in the top of the first inning. It jumpstarted what was a fantastic outing for Thompson. He allowed just two hits while striking out nine Vols in six shutout innings. His one shortcoming was a somewhat shaky command— three walks and two hit batters. But it mattered little as he worked his way out of the few tight spots he found himself in.

Tennessee didn’t oft threaten against Thompson. The Vols came their closest to adding a run in the fifth inning when Hunter Ensley worked a leadoff walk and Dean Curley was hit-by a pitch. But then Thompson struck out both Robin Villeneuve and Cal Stark before getting a Christian Moore fly out to get out of the inning.

Vanderbilt needed a series finale win to salvage the weekend badly. Thompson answered the bell and held down a fantastic Tennessee offense.

Strong Nate Snead Outing Keeps Tennessee In Striking Distance

After throwing just three pitches to get the final two outs of game two of the weekend series, Tennessee called upon Nate Snead to relieve Sechrist has he’s done almost every weekend this season.

Snead turned in a strong long relief outing in the series finale, allowing no runs on five hits and one walk in 4.1 innings of relief. The flame throwing right hander struck out four Commodores batters in what was a stout appearance.

The transfer pitcher showed the importance of Tennessee using his versatility out of the bullpen over the weekend as he both closed a game and was an effective long reliever.

Snead’s strong outing was good enough to keep Tennessee within striking distance but it mattered little on a quiet afternoon for the Vols’ offense.

As the regular season winds down, Big 12 tournament seeding and the padding of its résumé for the NCAA tournament will be on the line for Texas.

Texas closed out a weekend in Orlando with Sunday’s 10-7 win over Central Florida. With the three-run victory over a UCF team that it beat on Friday but lost to on Saturday, UT secured its eighth series win in Big 12 play.

Texas (32-20, 17-10) also used Sunday’s score to pull within a half-game in the Big 12 standings of second-place Oklahoma State (34-16, 17-9), which had its Sunday showdown with Texas Tech cancelled by weather. West Virginia (31-19, 17-10) is also tied with Texas for third place. Oklahoma State, Texas and West Virginia all have three conference games left on the schedule as OSU is set to travel to Houston (25-26, 7-19) this upcoming week while UT hosts Kansas (29-18, 15-12) and West Virginia must go to TCU (30-17, 13-14).

The top two teams in the Big 12 standings will receive a first-round bye at the conference tournament. Oklahoma (32-17, 21-6) has already clinched the No. 1 seed and its first-ever regular championship in a Big 12 regular season.

On Sunday, Texas squandered a 5-0 lead before it pulled away behind a three-run sixth inning and the two runs it scored in the eighth frame. The Longhorns were paced offensively by Jared Thomas’ four-hit performance and Rylan Galvan’s two-run homer.

Central Florida, which boasted a top-40 RPI, was able to spoil the homecoming of UT starting pitcher Lebarron Johnson Jr., who hails from Jacksonville. But Charlie Hurley and Gage Boehm combined to pitch 4 2/3 innings of four-hit relief, and those two pitchers were respectively credited with the win and save.

Texas does not have a midweek game on this upcoming week’s schedule. The UT-Kansas series will get going at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Thursday night.
