1 person dead in power plant explosion in Texas

FRANKLIN, Texas (KWTX/Gray News) – One person died Wednesday in a power plant boiler explosion on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The incident occurred at 8 a.m. during the commissioning of a new auxiliary boiler, leading to the on-site team immediately calling 911 and implementing emergency response protocols.

Robertson County first responders went to the Oak Grove Power Plant in Franklin after initial reports of an explosion with multiple injuries, according to the Robertson County Emergency Management.

Upon arrival, crews found that there was an explosion from a boiler, and there was one person seriously injured who succumbed to their injuries.

“Our sincerest thoughts and prayers are with the families of those impacted by this unfortunate event, and we would like to thank the local first responders for their quick response and efforts to render aid,” said a spokesperson for the Oak Grove Power Plant.

There were no other injuries, and the incident is under control.

All other employees and contractors have been accounted for and there are no other known injuries at this time.

Oak Grove remains in operation and is generating electricity.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

Abimelec Ortiz is finishing his 2024 minor league season with a flourish.

The Texas Rangers first baseman prospect was named the Texas League Player of the Week for September 9-15.

The 22-year-old Puerto Rico native batted .524 last week for Double-A Frisco, going 11-for-21 with four home runs, a double, eight RBI, and four walks against three strikeouts. He played in five games and hit his home runs in bunches, with two in back-to-back games against Amarillo.

Ortiz has a slash line of .243/.328/.432/.760 with 18 home runs, two triples, 21 doubles, and 64 RBI over 115 games during a full season with Frisco. He’s tied for fourth in home runs in the Texas League.

Earlier this season, Ortiz was among the Rangers’ top 30 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline, but has since dropped out of the top 30.

He moved into the top 30 on the strength of a huge 2023 in which he was named the Rangers’ Tom Grieve Minor League Player of the Year.

Ortiz slashed .294/.371/.619/.990 with 33 home runs, 20 doubles, 101 RBI, and 49 walks in 109 games between Class-A Down East and High-A Hickory in 2023.

He led the minor leagues in slugging percentage, led the South Atlantic League with 26 home runs, and was fourth across the minors in home runs and OPS. Along with the honor from the Rangers, he was named to the second team of MiLB’s Prospect Team of the Year.

That came after an offseason in which he worked with former Major League star Carlos Delgado and slashed .226/.308/.380 with Down East in 2022.

The Rangers signed Ortiz for $20,000 in 2021 as a non-drafted free agent out of SouthWestern State Junior College.

A 5.1 magnitude earthquake that shook parts of West Texas and apparently centered near Ackerly Monday night was also felt in other parts of the state, including Dallas, Austin and San Antonio, according to federal authorities and social media users who went online to share their experiences.

The seismic activity occurred around 7:49 p.m., according to the “X” account of the Midland bureau office of the National Weather Service.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage from the quake.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the depth of this earthquake was 8.2 kilometers with rattling reported as far south and east as Central Texas.

“We felt it in Austin definitely,” said David Goldiner in a comment shared on X.

What’s causing the earthquakes?

Geophysicists suggest that the recent earthquakes are likely a result of oil and gas operations.

West Texas has a long history of seismic activity induced by these operations, dating back to at least the 1970s, according to Robert Skoumal, a research geophysicist at the USGS.

How to stay safe?

The USGS advises individuals indoors to move into a hallway or against an interior wall while staying clear of items that could fall and break.

For outside individuals, its recommended to stay away from buildings, power lines, and chimneys.

NORTH TEXAS — A Richardson police chase ended in Dallas Monday evening, Dallas police said.

The chase ended along the southbound service road of Central Expressway, just north of the High Five.

From the CBS News Texas chopped, apparent bullet holes can be seen in a Richardson police vehicle.

It is unknown if anyone was injured.

Dallas police are assisting. Dallas Fire-Rescue is also on the scene.
