College football bowl game Wednesday predictions: Oklahoma State vs. Texas A&M

This is Part 2 of the Post Action College Bowl Guide.

Sometimes, it seems foolish to risk hard-earned money on bowl games. Dozens of teams show up after multiple weeks off, unrecognizable from the groups that spent the fall together. Coaches are gone. Stars have too much to lose to show up. Backups and role players are weighing offers in the transfer portal.

So, why even bother making predictions?

Because it beats the alternative.

Tulane (+10.5) over Virginia Tech

By now — after watching the past few weeks, after watching the past few years of games impacted by opt-outs — you should know not to overreact to the absence of any coach or player this time of year.

Tulane will be without head coach Willie Fritz and quarterback Michael Pratt, but the Green Wave will have much of their 11-win core, which took down Caleb Williams and USC in last season’s Cotton Bowl. Backup quarterback Kai Horton has seen few snaps, but has made the most of them, leading Tulane to an overtime win at Houston last year and during a close battle against No. 11 Ole Miss this season.

Duke’s Mayo

North Carolina (+6.5) over West Virginia

Drake Maye is off to prepare for his selection as a top-two pick in the NFL draft, triggering overwhelming action on the Mountaineers. Yet, the line hasn’t budged. North Carolina will still put up points, with the nation’s fifth-leading rusher (Omarion Hampton) and a dual-threat quarterback — “I feel like I can do everything,” Conner Harrell said. “West Virginia doesn’t have much film, they’re going to have a tough time, not really knowing.” — going against the nation’s 79th-ranked defense.

Louisville (-7) over USC

The Trojans have allowed an average of 42.4 points over their past eight games. Best of luck keeping pace without a former Heisman-winning quarterback (Williams), as well as the team’s leading rusher (Marshawn Lloyd) and receiver (Brenden Rice).

Betting on College Football?

Texas

Oklahoma State (-2) over Texas A&M

Continuity counts for something. While the Cowboys — who have won five of their past seven bowl games under Mike Gundy — will have virtually their entire roster available, Jimbo Fisher’s former team will be missing double-digit players who have either opted out or entered the transfer portal, including their starting quarterback and tight end, top-two receivers, leading tackler, three cornerbacks and a pair of five-star defensive linemen from their top-10 defense.

Three missionaries from Oklahoma-based group fatally shot in Haiti

Three people from an Oklahoma-based missionary group, including the daughter and son-in-law of a Missouri state representative, were shot and killed in a gang attack in Haiti as they were leaving an event at a church, the organization said Friday.

State Rep. Ben Baker and Missions in Haiti Inc. identified the victims as Davy Lloyd, son of the organization’s founders; his wife, Natalie Lloyd, Baker’s daughter; and Jude, its country director (the organization did not provide a last name). They were coming out of a church Thursday evening when they were ambushed by “a gang of 3 trucks full of guys,” Missions in Haiti said on its Facebook page.

Oklahoma State vs. Arizona softball super regional schedule, times, TV channels, live streams for 2024 NCAA games | Sporting News

Oklahoma State and Arizona emerged from their respective regionals after the first weekend of the 2024 NCAA softball tournament and are set to face off in the Stillwater super regional this weekend for a shot at the Women’s College World Series.

The No. 5 Cowgirls dominated the Stillwater regional, beating Northern Colorado, Kentucky and Michigan by a combined 16-3. Lexi Kilfoyl is OSU’s biggest threat on the mound with a 1.08 ERA in 155 innings pitched—she will test Arizona’s high-firing offense as arguably the best arm the Wildcats will face all year.

Arizona participated in Arkansas’ Fayetteville Regional, knocking the No. 12 Razorbacks into the losers’ bracket where they were upset by Villanova. Arizona then took down Villanova 9-4 to advance to Stillwater and is one of two unseeded teams in the super regionals along with Baylor.

Base errors, home runs dooms FSU softball in Game 1 of NCAA Super Regional at Oklahoma

Florida State softball struggled offensively and defensively against the Oklahoma Sooners in its loss in Game 1. Now the Seminoles are in a must-win situation to stay in the NCAA Softball Tournament.

No. 15 Florida State softball couldn’t afford any mistakes.

Especially against the defending Women’s College World Series champs, No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners.

On Thursday evening, FSU dropped to OU 11-3 in Game 1 of the NCAA super regional. The game ended in a run-rule, following a walk that secured the Sooners’ victory.

With missed opportunities to score on base, the Sooners (50-6) took advantage of the Seminoles’ (45-14) costly errors.

The Seminoles only recorded four hits but managed to find ways to get on base. Oklahoma’s defense was not rattled.

The miscues on base led to missed opportunities for the Seminoles to make it a competitive game. Even when the Seminoles loaded the bases twice, Oklahoma’s defense would follow through with two different double plays, making the Seminoles settle for less than what they would’ve hoped.

The Seminoles have been battle-tested all year, going through adversity such as injuries and starting five freshmen.

Head coach Lonni Alameda downplayed any pressure her Seminoles face going into the best-of-three series, noting that they must execute defensively despite being at a disadvantage.

“So I don’t feel they feel the pressure of producing, and we even talked about it earlier that they just got to keep doing what they’re doing,” Alameda said. “And we have a very potent lineup, so you know if they can do that any inning, good things can happen.”

The Seminoles, led by Devyn Flaherty, were able to tie it at two in the top third. Flaherty finished the night with two RBI following an RBI single from the senior. Jahni Kerr gave FSU’s third and final run in the Top 5 to extend the game for one more inning.

FSU softball’s pitching defense struggled against Oklahoma

Oklahoma hit four home runs on its home field.

Half of them came from infielder Alyssa Britto, who led the Sooners with three RBI after the game. Tiare Jennings and Kinzie Hansen also homered for the Sooners.

“I mean, we have to keep them off balance, and so we’ll make an adjustment tonight,” Alameda said. “(That) is making sure we do a better job mixing that change-up in there.”

Freshman Ashtyn Danley was the losing pitcher. In two innings, she allowed five runs, six hits and three hits. Alameda emphasized that the pitching defense must improve.

“You know, it’s been a pitching defense thing all season long,” Alameda said. “So I don’t think that we can hang our heads by any means on the outside. Like, we’ve got to be able to make some adjustments.

“We’ll go back and watch the tape learn try and see if we could be a little bit better tomorrow.”

What’s next for FSU softball?

To keep their WCWS hopes alive, the Seminoles must avoid a clean sweep by the Sooners and force it to Game 3.

FSU will return to Loves’ Field on Friday at 8 p.m.
