Visiting all 41 North Carolina state parks – Salisbury Post
Ken Beaver labored for the North Carolina Division of Corrections for 32 years, each beginning as an officer and ending because the warden on the Piedmont Correctional Establishment in Rowan County. Alongside the best way, he served in numerous different jail places. The excessive stress work and a lower than energetic way of life contributed to well being points.
Beaver selected retirement early this 12 months with two main targets in thoughts. He needed to get shifting once more, each by resuming favourite bodily actions and by visiting all 41 state parks in North Carolina.
Beaver mentioned, “The previous few years of labor, I simply was not energetic the best way I had been earlier. I had repeatedly performed softball and racquetball, together with fairly a little bit of operating. I went to NCparks.gov and determined to spend the following 4 months visiting these state parks and climbing in each one. I needed to see the state and hoped to catch 3-4 parks on every journey out.”
Utilizing the North Carolina State Parks Passport, Beaver started to map out tips on how to meet his aim. He purchased a Springer Spaniel pet and named him “Miles.” All of the parks are pet pleasant and Miles turned Beaver’s climbing associate. They started the journey on March 18 at Lake Norman and completed on Father’s Day weekend at Grandfather Mountain, a month forward of his four-month aim.
Reminiscing about his favourite stops on the journey, Beaver mentioned, “All of the parks have climbing trails. Some are steep and strenuous. My son Nick joined me on among the tougher hikes, only for the sake of security. Grandfather Mountain close to Banner Elk and Gorges close to Sapphire are two of these. Pettigrew State Park close to Creswell has a pleasant boardwalk and nice views of the second largest lake in N.C.. I all the time most well-liked to do the hikes when the parks have been much less crowded and needed to get no less than three climbing miles in every park.”
Wildlife was plentiful with deer, turkey and some snakes the commonest. Beaver was warned of bobcats, water moccasins and gators, though none have been seen. Some parks have been in bear habitats, however he didn’t see them both.
Different favorites included Hammocks Seashore State Park, a ravishing public seaside with plenty of actions together with the prospect to kayak to Bear Island. The lengthy boardwalk at Goose Creek was particular, together with Jones and Salters lakes at Jones Lake. At Fort Macon, the paths have been sand, not Beaver’s favourite, preferring a extra packed floor. Whereas coming back from a six-mile path, the park employees fired one of many large cannons. Beaver mentioned, “We have been shut, and that large growth bought my consideration and spooked Miles. At Carvers Creek, which is subsequent to the Fort Bragg advanced, we bought one other dose of artillery apply and Miles didn’t take care of that both.”
The full miles Beaver hiked within the parks was 103.15. He mentioned, “On days the place I went to a number of parks, I didn’t get the total three miles in. The common was 2.51 per park. Currituck BBQ Firm in Corolla was my favourite restaurant, value mentioning.”
Beaver encourages others to go to N.C. parks. He mentioned, “The parks are household pleasant; the paths are well-kept and marked. The tenting is superb, and all of the rangers are very pleasant. They’re very pleased with their parks. I made many of the visits by visiting for day journeys. The passport program is motivating and effectively accomplished. Employees members have been completely satisfied to speak with me and stamp my passport. Among the finest issues concerning the parks are the wonderful customer facilities. Practically all of them look new despite the fact that I do know they aren’t. Individuals respect the N.C. parks as a result of the state does such a terrific job with them.”
A lot of the parks have swimming, kayaking, tenting, fishing and boating. Many have mountain biking and horseback driving. Wind browsing and grasp gliding can be found at Jockey’s Ridge, four-wheel driving on the seaside at Fort Fisher and mountain climbing at among the mountain parks. All are free aside from Chimney Rock. Practically 600 miles of climbing trails can be found to discover among the many 237,000 acres of iconic panorama within the state’s parks, recreation and pure areas. The N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation manages 4 state rivers, seven state lakes and 9 state trails.
Up subsequent are a number of new challenges for Beaver and Miles. They plan to bike the Greenbrier River Path in West Virginia with Miles driving in a pull-behind trailer. With or with out Miles, Beaver plans to hike the N.C. portion of the Appalachian Path. He’s contemplating climbing the Mountains to the Sea Path, seemingly with 2-3 companions.
Since his retirement, Beaver is assembly his targets. He mentioned, “I’ve misplaced 18 kilos and not pre-diabetic. I’ve seen a lot of the state and I’m staying energetic. I’m enjoying racquetball a number of occasions per week. It’s thrilling to consider what’s forward.”

Who will Coach Hubert Davis start with the return of Seth Trimble and the continued ascent of freshman Ian Jackson? Trimble came off the bench in Tuesday’s win over SMU because the junior guard had only practiced once and hadn’t played since Dec. 21. If Trimble returns to the starting lineup for UNC at N.C. State, it isn’t clear who else will start.

Snow drought ends: Parts of central NC gets first measurable snowfall in 2 years | Live
The North Carolina Department of Transportation gave an update Friday afternoon on its preparations and strategies for managing roadways before, during and after the winter storm.
Doug McNeal, division maintenance engineer for NCDOT’s Division 5, said NCDOT has been preparing for this during the past three days.
Division 5 covers Durham and Wake counties as well as surrounding counties up to the Virginia line.
“We’ve had about 65 salt-brine applicators out in the division. We’ve put out roughly 465,000 gallons in our division,” McNeal said.
Statewide, more than 3 million gallons have been put down.
“We’re expecting impacts across pretty much all of North Carolina. Right now, we’re transitioning to our response time,” McNeal said. “We’re starting to see a little bit of snow in the air … but it’s certainly going to get treacherous out there.”
He said 110 DOT trucks and motor graders are ready to go and an additional 150 contract trucks are loaded and staged.
“As it starts to roll in, we generally wait until you can see tracks in the road before we start taking in, applying salt,” McNeal said. “If you apply before then, it just bounces off the roads, so you need a little bit of material there to capture it but once we give it a little bit of time to activate, and we’re plowing from there.”
He said another concern with this storm is the potential for freezing rain.
“We’re seeing forecasts potentially up to a quarter-inch of ice in the area,” McNeal said.
They’ve also staged what McNeal called cut-and-shove crews.
“We’ll take and try to cut it back to the edge of the pavement and then push off everything else so that the lanes are open and then we come back after things warm up in a couple of days and clear it up from there,” he explained.
McNeal said Saturday would be a good day for people to sleep in and “enjoy that cup of coffee before you go out.”

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein declares state of emergency ahead of winter storm
(WGHP) — Governor Josh Stein declared a statewide state of emergency on Thursday evening ahead of a winter storm expected to sweep through the Piedmont Triad on Friday.
He is urging people across North Carolina to prepare for cold temperatures, snow and ice.
“This storm will likely bring significant impacts from snow, sleet and freezing rain in different parts of the state,” Stein said. “North Carolinians should pay close attention to their local weather forecast, make sure they are prepared with what they need at home before Friday afternoon and stay home if possible as ice on the roadways will likely create dangerous driving conditions.”
On Wednesday, Stein activated state resources to set into motion a cross-agency storm response and enable the potential of federal reimbursement if the event qualifies.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has begun brining roads. They will work around the clock in 12-hour shifts to plow and treat snow and ice until all state-maintained roads are cleared.
“State emergency officials are monitoring the situation and are prepared to assist the counties and municipalities if needed,” NC Emergency Management Director Will Ray said. “Residents across the state should be prepared to shelter in place. If the power goes out, be sure to operate generators outside and away from open windows or doors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.”
