Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders win a huge pay raise

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders have gained a significant victory … something the NFL team they work for hasn’t done in a while.

Arguably the most famous cheerleaders in the world, it traditionally hasn’t been a high-paying job. In 2019, the Cowboys settled a lawsuit with a former cheerleader that led to the squad doubling the per-game pay from $200 to $400.

That’s a 100% increase, but the cheerleaders are about to get a much larger bump in pay … 400%.

That’s according to a member of the squad, who revealed the pay raise during an episode of the Netflix series “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.”

“Our efforts were heard and they wanted to give us a raise,” four-year veteran Megan McElaney said on the show. “And we ended up getting a 400% increase, which is like, life-changing.”

It seems like the raise shouldn’t put too much of a dent into the wallet of team owner Jerry Jones. The Cowboys are worth an estimated $10.1 billion, making them not only the most valuable team in the NFL, but also the world’s most valuable sports team.

The cheerleaders have been a fixture on the Cowboys’ sidelines since 1961. The squad saw its fame explode in the 1970s when former General Manager Tex Schramm had the squad begin wearing a more revealing uniform and begin performing dance routines, a departure from traditional cheerleading.

The cheerleaders have toured the world as part of USO shows, have appeared on TV shows and had a made-for-TV movies released in 1979 and 1980.

We have a little bit more than a month until Miami Dolphins training camp begins and their secondary is still a big question mark. With CB Jalen Ramsey expected to be traded sometime soon, the most proven cornerback on the team is Kader Kohou. The Dolphins have been talking to some veteran players and could possibly sign one of them before training camp begins. Or perhaps they’ll let the young guys develop and hope that their pass rush will be enough to help out. The Dolphins will get back Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb after both dealt with injuries last season. Plus the development Chop Robinson showed as the season went on left many fans excited to see his potential.

You can check out that story here, and the rest of the day’s round-up below.

Hispanic journalist arrested during metro Atlanta protests in ICE custody

A Hispanic journalist arrested during Saturday’s immigration protest is now in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, agents have confirmed to FOX 5.

On Wednesday evening, activists held a news conference to demand his release and for the charges against anyone arrested to be dropped.

What we know:

ICE agents picked up Mario Guevara, 47, from the DeKalb County jail overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, according to the agency.

They say the El Salvadoran man is here illegally. Guevara’s attorneys say he had a work authorization and was working toward getting a green card.

Now, his future is unknown.

What they’re saying:

Activists say Guevara should never have been arrested.

They say he listened to officers. Video reviewed by FOX 5 made it appear Guevara was on the sidewalk when officers arrested him, but he’s charged with obstruction of law enforcement officers, walking improperly in a roadway and unlawful assembly.

Protesters say they believe Guevara was targeted by police.

“The demand is that he’s immediately released back to his family and back to the community. And we’re going to be here fighting until he is released,” said Estevan Hernandez, an immigration rights activist. “These deportations do not make our country safer. They make it crueler than they stain the conscience of a nation that claims to stand for justice.”

“The journalist in question violated his visa years ago and was ordered by an immigration judge to leave the country in 2012. If he wanted to remain in our country, he should have done so legally,” said Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA). “It’s nice that ICE is finally upholding the rule of law, and they have my full support”

What’s next:

Guevara’s attorneys are trying to get a bond hearing in immigration court. It’s unclear if that will happen.

Protesters say they will demonstrate again this Saturday in Lawrenceville.
