The Southern Jaguars (1-6) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (6-1) tangle in a Sunday matinee in Starkville. Tip-off at Humphrey Coliseum will be at 4 p.m. ET (SEC Network). Southern continues through its David schedule against Goliaths. The Jaguars have already met TCU, Arizona, Illinois and Marquette. All are top-30 in KenPom. Now, SU totes a 5-game losing streak (straight up and against the spread) into Sunday’s battle in Starkville, the 1st meeting between these 2 programs since 2015 when the Jaguars earned a 76-72 win over MSU.

The Bulldogs, which are No. 22 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, won their 1st 6 games this season, but they faltered at Georgia Tech (67-59) in their last game on Nov. 28 as a -8.5 favorite. Mississippi State shot just 30.8% from the floor in getting stung by the Yellow Jackets.

SU’s road to a cover is paved all along the 3-point arc. But the Bulldogs have been silly-good in cutting off perimeter attacks so far. They have allowed a 25% success rate; that ranks 7th in the nation. Should we expect some regression there? Yes, but that type of defense is also systemic in coach Chris Jans’ style.

Jans should have his team’s attention after the setback at GTU, and MSU figures to dominate all the efficiency angles, the boards and the charity stripe.

A run-ragged-over-their-heads Southern team may not have enough in the tank to stay within 35 here. Consider a partial-unit play on MISSISSIPPI STATE -25.5 (-118).

Manhunt underway for two suspected killers who escaped from Mississippi prison

A manhunt is underway to track down two suspected killers who have escaped from a jail in southwestern Mississippi.

Tyrekennel Collins, 24, and Dezarrious Johnson, 18, broke out of the Claiborne County Detention Center around 2.20am local time on Friday, according to the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department.

Footage from the facility shows the men crawling into the ceiling of the jail, the sheriff’s department said.

From there, the pair managed to find a means of escape to the jail’s exterior.

Johnson reportedly injured his right leg during the escape, which may have given him a limp, authorities said.

Both men are currently awaiting trial for separate murder chargers in separate counties.

The sheriff’s department warned that they “are considered to be dangerous” and urged “all citizens to take necessary precautions”.

Collins is charged with murder in Copiah County for the October killing of his 46-year-old cousin, James Collins. Copiah County is approximately 40 miles west of Claiborne County.

Johnson is charged with both murder and aggravated assault in Jefferson County after he allegedly killed one person and injured two others. His trial is set to begin on October 15. Jefferson County is directly south of Claiborne County.

The Claiborne County Detention Center is located in Port Gibson, Mississippi, which is approximately 60 miles southwest of Jackson.

Mississippi sales tax holiday helping parents shop for back to school

PINE BELT, Miss. (WDAM) – Shoppers across Mississippi can look forward to cheaper prices July 12 through July 14 as the state observes a sales tax holiday.

Beginning at 12:01 a.m. next Friday until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, there will be a hold on sales taxes for clothing, footwear and school supplies under $100.

The holiday is earlier than usual this year, helping out some Pine Belt parents whose children return to school as soon as July 22.

“I think it’s helpful for sure,” April Jordan said. “With two children, it definitely helps out, and moving it up a little earlier since the start of school is a little earlier is definitely an advantage, for sure.”

Families with multiple children especially are grateful as the cost of living rises and school supply lists grow longer.

“We have four kids, so anytime we can go clothes shopping for them, we look forward to any kind of discount we can get,” said Bryce Hantla.

Other parents are on the fence about hitting the aisles during the sales tax holiday because of large crowds.

“It’s kind of like Black Friday, where it’s like ‘Hey you can save 10 percent’ and I’m like ‘OK …’” said Chris Jordan.

Even grandparents, who can remember fondly this time of year with their own children, said they also were happy to see things get a little easier for parents.

“We loved school shopping,” Valerie Craig said, “We liked getting all the supplies for the kids and it was fun for us.

“I’m kind of sad we’re not doing it this year. But, we’ll definitely take advantage when it’s our time again.”

Eligible items this holiday include: baby clothes, backpacks, most athletic wear, shoes, scout uniforms, and casual footwear or boots.

Other deals in stores, like buy one, get one free items, also will be tax free if the full priced item is less than $100.
