However, it won’t be an easy task. Led by coach Steve Pikiell, the Scarlet Knights (7-3, 0-1 Big Ten) have won back-to-back games. The streak started with a win at Seton Hall on Dec. 9, which is Rutgers’ lone top-100 KenPom win this season.

Mississippi State has failed to advance beyond the regular season since its 2021 national championship run. However, after winning 17 conference games in this year’s regular season and winning two contests in the SEC tournament, the Bulldogs delivered a résumé worthy of postseason baseball.

St. John’s comes to Charlottesville off a Big East tournament title. This year marks the first NCAA Tournament bid for the Red Storm since 2018.

Friday’s meeting marks the first in history between Mississippi State and St. John’s.

Morning Bell: Friday, May 31st, 2024: Postseason Play is Here for Mississippi State

Mississippi State is back in the postseason, and they will send their ace to the mound. Khal Stephen has been steady for State all year, holding an 8-3 record with a 3.38 ERA.

Navigating through a regional regarding pitching is difficult because the odds are State will face their stiffest competition in the second game. However, MSU must avoid the losers bracket, so they opt to go with their ace.

The best scenario for MSU would be to get a good start from the junior right-hander and save their bullpen for game two. Hunter Hines and Dakota Jordan have both been in a slump at the plate, combining for only one hit during the SEC tournament.

Regardless of pitching, MSU will only advance to the Super Regionals next week if the two Mississippi natives provide some production.
