JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – On Saturday in San Antonio, the best high school football seniors in the country will be in San Antonio playing in the 2024 All-American Bowl. Included in that list is offensive lineman Jimothy Lewis Jr.
Lewis Jr., a Madison native and Mississippi State commit, played his high school football at the prestigious IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL, and is excited to play on the same field as the most talented high school players in the country.
“Guys just come from all around the country to play in that game. It just lets you know there’s talent everywhere, lets you see there’s better people better than you. It’s crazy,” Lewis Jr. said.
Montra Edwards, the defensive coordinator at Hazlehurst High School, has been working with Lewis Jr. on and off for a few years. He was not surprised to learn of his invite to the All-American Bowl.
“He’s been working hard ever since I’ve known him,” Edwards said. “He comes in, he busts his butt; great kid, smart kid, loves to work, and embraces the grind.”
Lewis Jr. is one of three Mississippi players who will be playing in the game, being joined by Meridian’s Daniel Hill and Houston’s William Echoles. Lewis Jr. is proud to represent the Magnolia State on the national stage.
“It puts Mississippi on the spot,” he said. “There’s good players here, kids come in here, train, doing stuff like that; it helps them.”
“He’s laying the legacy down, showing them that, ‘I’m a guy from Mississippi, I deserve to be in big time all-star games. When I get there, I’m going to compete just like everybody else,’” Edwards said.
Lewis Jr. said his only goal for this weekend is to get on the field and make an impact, but Edwards knows he will make his mark.
“I expect him to dominate,” he said.
The All-American Bowl will be played in San Antonio’s Alamodome on Saturday. The game will kick off at noon central time, and it will air on NBC.

July 6 (UPI) — Two inmates held on murder charges are back behind bars Saturday after they escaped from a Mississippi jail.
Claiborne County Sheriff Edward Good said deputies found 24-year-old Tyrekennel Collins and 18-year-old Dezarrious Johnson at an abandoned home Saturday morning after the two had escaped the Claiborne County Detention Center at around 2:20 a.m. Friday. Clairborne County is 60 miles south of Jackson, Miss.
They will be transported to Jefferson County and Copiah County, respectively, where they were originally arrested for murder. Their escape will land them additional charges, which carry up to five years in prison, Good said.
Chief Deputy Christy Sykes told NBC News the inmates escaped by climbing through a ceiling panel in the common area of the jail. From there, they made their way to a window and used bed sheets to rappel to the ground.
Other inmates immediately alerted jail staff that the two had escaped.
Johnson injured his leg during the escape and had a bad limp, according to authorities.
The sheriff’s department warned residents to “take necessary precautions.” The two were not believed to be armed during their escape but were still considered dangerous.
Collins was arrested in 2023 in connection with the murder of his 46-year-old cousin.
Johnson is charged with murder and aggravated assault in the killing of one person and injury of two others in 2022.
Sykes said this isn’t the first time Claiborne County inmates have been able to escape through a panel in the ceiling.
“It’s been an issue,” she said. “We’re working closely with the board of supervisors to get this taken care of as soon as possible.”

A manhunt is underway to track down two suspected killers who have escaped from a jail in southwestern Mississippi.
Tyrekennel Collins, 24, and Dezarrious Johnson, 18, broke out of the Claiborne County Detention Center around 2.20am local time on Friday, according to the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department.
Footage from the facility shows the men crawling into the ceiling of the jail, the sheriff’s department said.
From there, the pair managed to find a means of escape to the jail’s exterior.
Johnson reportedly injured his right leg during the escape, which may have given him a limp, authorities said.
Both men are currently awaiting trial for separate murder chargers in separate counties.
The sheriff’s department warned that they “are considered to be dangerous” and urged “all citizens to take necessary precautions”.

Collins is charged with murder in Copiah County for the October killing of his 46-year-old cousin, James Collins. Copiah County is approximately 40 miles west of Claiborne County.
Johnson is charged with both murder and aggravated assault in Jefferson County after he allegedly killed one person and injured two others. His trial is set to begin on October 15. Jefferson County is directly south of Claiborne County.
The Claiborne County Detention Center is located in Port Gibson, Mississippi, which is approximately 60 miles southwest of Jackson.
