Wes Moore wins Democratic primary for Maryland governor, CNN projects

Moore, a Rhodes scholar and former White Home fellow, first grew to become well-known for his 2010 bestselling memoir, “The Different Wes Moore,” an inspirational story of two boys with the identical identify and ties to the tough streets of Baltimore.

He’ll face Republican state Del. Dan Cox, an election denier who has taken a sequence of hard-line conservative positions, within the race for what will probably be one of the vital troublesome governor’s workplaces for the GOP to carry in November’s midterms.

Cox on Tuesday received the GOP major nomination to exchange term-limited Republican Gov. Larry Hogan — an consequence that showcased Republican voters’ willingness to scrap what had been a successful formulation within the deep-blue state after Hogan angered his personal get together along with his criticism of Trump and his public security measures amid the coronavirus pandemic. Hogan had backed Kelly Schulz in that major, whereas Trump had endorsed Cox.

Maryland Weather: Spectacular Sunday, heat & storms next week

CBS News Baltimore

Live

BALTIMORE — A spectacular Sunday is on the way. Intense heat and humidity return next week along with afternoon storm chances.

Sunshine continues Sunday with temperatures climbing just a touch in the low 90s across the forecast area, unless you are in the mountains or near the water. Cooler water temperatures will help keep those afternoon highs in the upper 80s.

Heat and humidity become the big story next week. High pressure to our east will help pump in hot and muggy air. Highs return to the lower to middle 90s Monday afternoon. A few isolated storms will be possible during the afternoon and evening hours, but many places will not get wet as storms stay isolated.

Tuesday will be very warm and muggy. With extra cloud cover, our high temperatures stay in the middle to upper 80s. Isolated to scattered storms are possible during the afternoon and evening hours.

Wednesday through Friday will be very hot and muggy with highs in the lower to middle 90s. Feels like temperatures will reach 100° or higher during this stretch. There will be isolated to scattered storms Wednesday afternoon and evening. Thursday looks dry and very hot with highs in the middle to upper 90s. Friday has a tropical steam with highs in the lower to middle 90s with scattered afternoon and evening drenching thunderstorms.

Since we are headed into another heat wave, you’ll want to make sure you’re taking all of the heat precautions. Drink plenty of water, take breaks in the A/C, or find a way to cool your body down such as taking a cool shower or using a wet cool towel. Don’t forget to make sure to check on your pets, neighborhoods, and elderly during this next round of heat as well.

Apple has reached a tentative collective bargaining contract with the first unionized company store in the country.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ Coalition of Organized Retail Employees, which represents the employees at a retail location in Maryland, announced Friday evening that it struck a three-year deal with the company that will increase pay by an average of 10% and offer other benefits to workers.

The agreement must be approved by roughly 85 employees at the store, which is located in the Baltimore suburb of Towson. A vote is scheduled for Aug. 6.

“By reaching a tentative agreement with Apple, we are giving our members a voice in their futures and a strong first step toward further gains,” the union’s negotiating committee said in a statement. “Together, we can build on this success in store after store.”

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The deal came after workers at the store authorized a strike in May, saying talks with management for more than a year hadn’t yielded “satisfactory outcomes.”

The Maryland store is one of only two unionized Apple sites in the country. Employees there voted in favor of the union in June 2022, a few months before workers at a second Apple location in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, unionized with the Communications Workers of America. The second store has not secured a contract with the tech company.

Unions have scored headline-grabbing election wins in recent years, including at an Amazon warehouse in New York City, a Chipotle store in Michigan and hundreds of Starbucks stores across the country. But many of them have not secured contracts.
