Florida takes top ranking for robocalls

It’s a dubious honor for the Sunshine State as the records show Florida residents get more spam and robocalls than any other state in the country.
But that problem is about to get even worse.
Fox 4 Investigates’s Ryan Kruger shows us how your phone could soon be ringing off the hook. In fact, one recent study shows Floridians get more than 4 times as many spam calls and text messages than the next closest state. And some experts say you’re about to get even more. A recent report by the consumer group — customer service number – found Florida residents received by far the most spam complaints in the country.
Zach Zermay is a consumer lawyer in Fort Myers who specializes in robocalls and spam. He says lawmakers have worked in the past to dramatically cut down on the number of robocalls, including passing legislation in 2021 that banned some companies from using automated systems to make robocalls without permission from the person on the other end of the phone.
The Federal Trade Commission says Floridians complained about robocalls 388,000 thousand times in 2021.
In 2022, there was a 45% drop in the number of complaints.
Zermay fears those protections are going away.
Governor DeSantis signed new legislation in May that critics argue would allow companies to make even more robocalls.
But supporters, like the Florida retail federation, say those consumer protections are still there and that the new law cuts down the number of people who can file lawsuits against businesses for calling them. 1

Parts of South Florida recovering after wet, windy weekend

MIAMI – Severe weather over the weekend caused quite a bit of chaos across areas of South Florida.
Whipping winds, lightning, hail and lots of rainfall led to heavy flooding that forced residents to stay inside in areas like Miami Beach and Edgewater.
On Sunday, the last day of Ultra Music Festival, the event was delayed an hour and guests were forced to seek shelter at certain points.
The festival released alerts telling the attendees to stay safe.
The strong thunderstorms also led to a hazardous scene at the University of Miami.
An area was closed to the public after a portion of one of the freshmen dorm patios collapsed.
The housing department sent an email saying a portion of Mahoney Pearson outdoor patio was damaged. It happened Sunday around 6 p.m.
South Florida’s major airports also felt the impact of the poor weather.
At Miami International Airport, there were 38 delays and 28 cancellations while further north at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, a total of 33 delays and 12 cancellations were reported.

Auburn vs. Florida odds: Current line, win probability, final score prediction, how to watch NCAA Tournament

For the first time since 2008, every team in the Final Four will be a 1-seed. On Saturday, 1-seed Auburn will square off against 1-seed Florida in the Final Four.
Auburn fell 90-81 when it met Florida earlier this season on Feb. 8. However, the Tigers have looked formidable in the NCAA Tournament. Auburn star Johni Broome has been particularly excellent. He’s leading the Tigers in points and rebounds this season.
Of course, Florida has no shortage of standouts, either. Senior guard Walter Clayton Jr. exploded for 30 points in the Gators’ comeback win over Texas Tech in the Elite Eight. With the performance, he became the first player in program history to have multiple 30-point NCAA Tournament games.
