Suspect in custody after crashing into police cars while evading arrest in Delaware
BEAR, Delaware (WPVI) — A man is in custody after car crash and police shooting took place in New Castle County on Saturday night.
The incident started just before 11:45 p.m. when New Castle County police responded to the unit block of Augustine Place in Bear, Delaware, for an assault in progress.
At the scene, police say a suspect fled in his vehicle, which then struck a car and several police SUVs.
As he fled, authorities say the suspect hit a New Castle County police officer, prompting police to open fire at the suspect.
Despite the gunfire, the suspect reportedly fled the scene in his vehicle. The car was later found abandoned a short distance away and the suspect was believed to have fled on foot.
Investigators later identified the suspect as 36-year-old Carlos Torres of Wilmington.
A search warrant was issued for Torres on Sunday, and police say they searched several known addresses where he may have been.
Torres was then located and taken into custody, according to police.
Authorities say he was not injured in the shooting but he was injured at some point in the initial altercation that first called police to the home.
Torres has since been charged with assault in the second degree, terroristic threatening, reckless endangerment, and other related offenses.
Investigators said the officers involved in the incident were not seriously injured.
The officers who fired at Torres, a 12-year veteran and a 3-year veteran on the force, have been placed on administrative leave per division policy.

Delaware Arby’s robbery suspect sprayed “chemical agent” on employee before taking money from safe
NEWARK, Del. (CBS) — Two Arby’s employees are recovering from their injuries following a robbery at the fast-food chain in Newark, Delaware, Saturday night, Delaware State Police said.
DSP investigators responded to the Arby’s in the Liberty Plaza/Possum Park Mall on Capitol Trail in Newark for a reported robbery just before 10 p.m.
According to police, a man wearing a black hoodie and ski mask allegedly entered the restaurant, moved behind the counter and sprayed a “chemical agent” on an Arby’s employee. While the suspect was spraying the chemical agent, police say he forced another employee to a different area of the restaurant.
The suspect then stole an “undisclosed” amount of money from a safe before running from the restaurant.
State troopers searched the area for the robbery suspect but could not find him, DSP said.
Investigators said the Arby’s employees suffered minor injuries.
It’s unclear at this time what the chemical agent used in the robbery was.

Brayden Schager Propels Hawaii Football to Week Zero Victory over Delaware State
In Week Zero, the Saturday slate of games concluded on the island of Oahu with the Hawaii Warriors powering past the Delaware State Hornets for a 35-14 victory.
In the face of high winds from Tropical Storm Hone, UH quarterback Brayden Schager was the driving force in the win, finishing with four total touchdowns – two through the air, and two on the ground. The Dallas-area native also completed 17-of-34 passes for 203 yards in this game.

Schager connected with Tamatoa Mokiao-Atimalala on an 11-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to open the scoring. At the end of that first quarter, Tylan Hines returned a punt forty yards for a touchdown. Hines’ return was the first punt return touchdown for Hawaii since 2012.
Marqui Adams got the Hornets on the board with a ten-yard touchdown run to cap a 77-yard drive. Hawaii led just 14-7 at the half.
In the second half, Delaware State opened the frame with another long touchdown drive, making an upset seem like a possibility with the score tied 14-14. However, the Hornets would not reach the endzone again.
Schager on the other hand, would lead three more touchdown drives for Hawaii to put the game away, including one that resulted in a 29-yard bomb to Dekel Crowdus.
Hawaii’s 2024 schedule continues on Saturday, August 31, at 7:30 PM ET/4:30 PM PT on CBS when UH hosts Big Ten newcomers UCLA.
