Training has seen many challenges over the previous two years. College students and households have needed to take care of interrupted studying as a result of pandemic in addition to restricted entry to summer season programming. Based on unbiased research and pupil achievement knowledge, this has resulted in notable studying deficits amongst a lot of our youth. Some individuals name these deficits studying loss. Some name it unfinished studying. Regardless, the results are evident, and we, as a state, are working diligently to do one thing about it. The Division of Training has been working in tandem with particular person faculty districts and constitution faculties to make sure that summer season studying plans are in place all through the state.
Recognizing that each one college students, particularly deprived college students, have been adversely affected by the pandemic, these plans are in place to offer alternatives for sturdy studying to proceed to happen at scale all through the summer season. We on the division have coined this summer season, the Summer time of Alternative. We would like college students to proceed to remain concerned with each other and supported by expert people, in order that they proceed to develop and thrive whereas ready for the 2022-2023 educational yr to start. This implies, regardless of a kid’s zip code, all college students may have the chance to take part in a summer season program that’s fascinating, thrilling, and helps them develop academically, socially, and emotionally. This yr’s summer season packages, as all the time, will give attention to literacy and arithmetic however there may even be varied alternatives for college kids to expertise actions that they might not have had entry to beforehand. These actions could embody drama, the taking part in of an instrument, artwork courses, dance, and extra. They could additionally embody the usage of native sources similar to our state and nationwide parks the place there are alternatives for mountaineering, biking, fishing, and swimming. As a state, we hope to successfully tackle college students’ educational and social and emotional studying in an genuine method, permitting for as a lot flexibility as potential relating to tempo, choice of materials, content material, subjects, and pupil voice and decision-making round what pursuits and conjures up them. And we’ve got all come to appreciate that children being engaged and concerned isn’t solely good for private development but additionally psychological well being and well-being.
Measuring pupil progress is difficult, particularly throughout the summer season months when youngsters are accessing totally different packages and actions. For some college students and households, a half day program works higher than a full day program and vice versa. Some college students will attend summer season packages that exposes them to a number of totally different content material, subjects, supplies, and experiences whereas different could select to give attention to a specific subject, topic, or talent. Offering youngsters and households with many choices is an effective factor. Nonetheless, the higher the differential in programing the more difficult it’s to measure development. Thus, the Division of Training is working with companions to measure development in particular summer season packages utilizing each qualitative and quantitative knowledge. In doing so, we are able to decide what packages had not solely the excessive participation charges but additionally produced the strongest outcomes.
Whereas planning for The Summer time of Alternative, we heard from our districts and constitution faculties in addition to our community-based organizations (CBOs) and faith-based organizations that their best hurdle is staffing. Discovering dedicated and well-trained employees to work with younger individuals is an actual problem proper now. We introduced this problem to the Governor’s Household Providers Cupboard Council and brainstormed methods wherein this might be addressed. The reply is the creation of the Governor’s Summer time Fellowship program. Highschool college students, particularly those that are presently enrolled within the state’s Instructor Academy Pathway, are being recognized and educated to assist these summer season packages in paid positions. The Workforce Help Crew on the Division of Training, the Governor’s Workplace, the United Manner, different neighborhood companions, and our faculties and districts have labored collaboratively to launch this initiative in brief time. In reality, we’ve got already had greater than 100 highschool college students in our three counties apply to participate. All chosen college students will undergo a full week of coaching in preparation for placement into summer season packages of their communities.
Whereas all of us need for the upcoming summer season to be again to regular and resemble the summers of the previous, we should additionally acknowledge the chance that sits earlier than us: a possibility for our state to offer as many significant and thrilling alternatives for development as potential for our younger learners, particularly those that have traditionally been unnoticed up to now. A centered effort steeped in a lens of fairness and entry is strictly what’s wanted as we transfer from pandemic to endemic and put together for what might be a powerful and extra productive 2022-23 faculty yr.

Autumn’s newest tradition: The Delaware Fall Festival at Battery Park
The story behind the Kalmar Nyckel
Here’s the story behind the Kalmar Nyckel, the Swedish Mayflower of the Delaware Valley. 10/29/24
Sunday’s autumn weather was perfect for the inaugural Delaware Fall Festival.
The event took place at Battery Park in the historic Old New Castle area of New Castle, providing the ideal setting for a community gathering and a worthy cause.
The free event was organized to raise funds and awareness for the New Castle Outdoor Recreation Coalition’s planned expansion of the park’s playground. Phase 2 of the Battery Park Playground Project will feature a replica of the Kalmar Nyckel, the Swedish flagship that brought settlers who established the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley in 1638.
The festival featured live entertainment, children’s activities, and various food vendors.
Renee Duval, a three-year resident of New Castle, attended the festival with her husband and two children. As regular visitors to Battery Park who often stroll the path near Deemers Beach, they were excited to explore the event after hearing about the food trucks, music, and vendors.
Among the vendors was Theresa Batts, owner of Batts Concessions from Hartford County, Maryland, who learned about the festival through social media. She said the timing was perfect. She and her husband prefer to sell on weekends, but it is very hard to find events on a Sunday. And this weekend, they were celebrating their business’s first anniversary. Batts Concessions offered an array of treats, including kettle corn, homemade peanut brittle, various nuts, and cotton candy. When asked how sales were going, Batts replied, “Fantastic. No complaints. We would definitely do it again next year.”
Delaware Fall Festival organizers hope to make this an annual tradition for the historic waterfront community.
