Guest Commentary: Delaware needs more pre-K education, Montessori can help
By Sean Steward and Linda Zankowsky
Sean Steward is a board member of Montessori Works and Sussex Montessori Public Constitution College, the place considered one of his kids attends. Linda Zankowsky is the board chair of Montessori Works and Sussex Montessori. Her kids attended Montessori faculties by sixth grade.
It’s that point of yr once more: Greater than 150,000 kids in Delaware are heading again to highschool. Nevertheless, fewer than 1,500 are benefiting from Montessori training, which means fewer than 1,500 kids will profit from this partaking, developmentally acceptable training mannequin.
Mother and father and policymakers are in place to extend entry to those life-changing applications. And — given how the pandemic has solely magnified the significance of early childhood training — time is of the essence.
The Montessori mannequin is suitable for all kids as a result of kids are on the heart of the mannequin. This system adjusts to the kid. As a substitute of anticipating kids to progress neatly by a regimented day, sitting nonetheless and transitioning from one adult-determined exercise to the subsequent, the Montessori method permits kids of all ages to discover their surroundings and observe their curiosity. Montessori lecture rooms concentrate on hands-on studying alternatives, permitting kids to interact with what pursuits them most. Lecturers act as guides, facilitating the kids’s studying and offering the construction wanted for youngsters to be self-directed.
Whereas usually related to personal faculties and applications, there are public Montessori faculties in all 50 states and over 500 in complete throughout the nation. In Delaware, there are two public applications in New Fortress County and a more recent one in Sussex County.
Sussex Montessori Public Constitution College is an instance of what dad and mom and advocates working collectively could make potential. Montessori Works, the nonprofit on whose board we each serve, explored alternatives statewide to develop entry to Montessori and finally raised greater than $18 million to construct Sussex Montessori on a former dairy farm in Seaford. We’re honored that Sussex Montessori College has been acknowledged by the Delaware State Information’ Stars of Delaware because the Finest Constitution College for 2022.
This fall, greater than 400 kids in grades Ok-5 will flock to the campus, studying indoors and outdoor and instructing their friends in mixed-age lessons. To this point, greater than 51% of the scholars come from low-income households, and 45% of the scholars determine as individuals of shade.
Montessori is working in Delaware, simply because it has labored all over the world for greater than 100 years, when Maria Montessori pioneered the method in Italy. It labored for the founders of Google and the founding father of Amazon. It labored for basketball celebrity Steph Curry and culinary celebrity Julia Baby. It should work to your youngster because it has labored for ours.
After we requested our youngsters about their days at a Montessori program, they didn’t say “effective” as kids usually do. As a substitute, as a result of kids in Montessori applications have selections over how they spend their time, their solutions are filled with particulars and enthusiasm. The kids wish to be there. Consequently, after we speak to college students at Sussex Montessori, we hear “enjoyable” describing their studying expertise rather more than “effective.”
The Montessori curriculum usually focuses on kids from delivery to 12 years outdated however has been expanded to incorporate center and highschool, as nicely. In Delaware, two of the general public applications concentrate on grades Ok-6, and one focuses on Ok-8. Delaware households are clamoring for spots in these applications — the three public elementary Montessori applications in our state have greater than 500 kids on their waitlists.
There may be clear demand to develop Montessori applications, and essentially the most impactful space for progress is in early childhood training. In spite of everything, “Delaware is within the backside quartile and behind all neighboring states relating to pre-Ok entry and enrollment,” based on a Rodel Basis report. “Solely 845 kids, 5 % of four-year-olds and two % of three-year-olds, had been enrolled in state sponsored pre-Ok in 2018-2019.”
That needn’t be the case. Analysis tells us that early childhood training may be transformative, particularly throughout these preliminary phases of improvement. Nonprofits like Montessori Works and philanthropic teams just like the Longwood, Welfare and Crystal Belief foundations — which all contributed to creating Sussex Montessori — are dedicated to increasing early childhood training programming.
The subsequent step lies with dad and mom and policymakers. Mother and father should make it clear to highschool district directors and state lawmakers that they need their kids to have the ability to entry a Montessori training. Policymakers should cut back the hurdles to creating new, free fashions for all Delaware households.
Collectively, we will make it potential for 1000’s extra kids in Delaware to get a robust begin by Montessori.

“At this time we are still trying to determine why she was in the area, there’s no none known family or contacts of hers that are in the area.,” said Cpt. Jackie Smithson, with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say they plan to interview family members next week to determine why this happened.
No additional details are being released at this time.

Thousands of Delawareans visit food pantries ahead of Thanksgiving holiday
Turner said the need has been critical since the start of the pandemic, even with the government aid in the first few years.
“While all of those interventions that were in place, we actually saw a decrease in the number of people coming out to the food bank,” she said. “When those ended, inflation also hit. So since then, it’s just been a huge demand in our community.”
The Wilmington food pantry Gracia visited this week has been sponsored over the past six years by state Rep. Kim Williams, D-Stanton, and state Sens. Jack Walsh, D-Pike Creek, and Spiros Mantzavinos, D-Elsmere.
“It’s just a resource we want to provide to those who may need a little more extra help during the holiday season,” Williams said. “We’re happy to do this.”
Turner said while it’s the holiday season, it’s also important to remember many Delawareans are food insecure year-round. A 2022 study from Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks and pantries, shows more than 120,100 Delawareans are facing hunger, 37,680 of them are children. That means 1 in 8 people and 1 in 6 children in the First State are food insecure.
“Come January, our donations are going to drop significantly,” Turner said. “So we encourage people to keep our neighbors in mind during those cold winter months when oftentimes low-income people are choosing between heating their home or buying groceries.”

Newark approves recreational weed dispensary, still ways to go before opening
Delaware communities prepare for legal weed in 2025
Delaware municipalities prepare for the recreation marijuana industry, which is set to open legal retail shops in April 2025.
Newark remains on track to be a competitive city for recreational marijuana in Delaware.
Two marijuana-related ordinances were approved at the Nov. 25 City Council meeting. The Council updated the city code regarding adult recreational use to match state law, as well as approved a special use permit for the eventual operation of a recreational dispensary in the city.
A special use permit allowing Fresh Delaware to operate in the city as a recreational marijuana business with cultivation, manufacturing and retail was approved with a unanimous vote.
“I think that Newark City Council can take a lot of pride in the fact that there are other towns and counties that are literally lost in the wilderness on this because they didn’t get things done in time,” Mayor Jerry Clifton said.
Fresh Delaware moves to open retail dispensary
Fresh Delaware and the area surrounding it was re-zoned to allow recreational marijuana cultivation, manufacturing and retail in August, but it required a special use permit from the city. Now, Fresh Delaware only has the state’s conversion process left to complete before it can shift from medical-only sales.
City council members uniformly had positive reviews for the representative of Fresh Delaware present at the meeting.
“You were a good neighbor,” Councilmember Corinth Ford said.
Fresh Delaware cultivates and manufactures its own product, and has an additional location in Seaford. It is one of the 13 medical dispensaries in the state. There is another area in Newark zoned to allow recreational marijuana business toward the Maryland border.
Fresh Delaware is on track to open for recreational sales in the spring, according to the state Office of the Marijuana Commissioner. Spring is the statewide goal for retail openings, though the store still has a ways to go on its conversion track.
Where other Delaware cities stand
As Newark approves a recreational business, other cities in the county are behind.
Wilmington has been back-and-forth on bans, buffers and zones while New Castle County government is discussing possible buffers for retail locations in December. Other cities in Delaware, including Rehoboth, Lewes and Bethany, banned retail altogether.
Wilmington recently asked the state to change the law to get a cut of any sales tax, but Mayor Jerry Clifton said he wants to take a wait-and-see approach on how the state government responds to its request.
Newark mirrors state code in recreational usage
The council updated the city code around recreational usage, updating its code to match the state. The city code now reads that people 21 and older can privately use a personal quantity of 12 grams or less of concentrated cannabis, or cannabis products containing 750 milligrams or less of delta-9 THC.
Public use is still a criminal misdemeanor, however, and using while under 21 years old is a civil violation. Smoking marijuana in public also violates state law. City solicitor Paul Bilodeau said private consumption can include someone’s backyard.
Some council members had ideas about how to regulate potential parties where the smell could spread from multiple smokers, but no official action was taken on those ideas.
The ordinance was approved unanimously by City Council.
“We are in a strange world where it is legal to consume marijuana in private, but it is illegal to buy it,” Bilodeau said.
