What we learned in FC Dallas' 3-2 win over Portland

The fireworks were big and loud on July 4th for FC Dallas. Not only did the post-game celebration include the annual fireworks show for the fans, but the game itself included plenty of fireworks, as FC Dallas downed the Portland Timbers 3-2.

FC Dallas’s come-from-behind win helped end a two-game losing streak. The club now heads to Kansas City for what will be one of its most important weeks this season.

We’ll shift gears to Kansas City tomorrow, but let’s first dive into last night’s fun win with some items we learned along the way.

I won’t dive too much into the first half. Aside from the Timbers getting a very early look at goal 16 seconds into the match and then the actual first goal of the game minutes later, there really wasn’t a ton to write home about in the opening 45 minutes.

Thankfully, whatever interim manager Peter Luccin said at halftime worked. FC Dallas came out more aggressive and pressed the Timbers into bad turnovers on their own end.

Cowboys offensive line ranked in top 10 by PFF

Cowboys offensive line ranked in top 10 by PFF

At one point in time, the Dallas Cowboys had the top offensive line in the NFL when Tyron Smith, Zack Martin, and Travis Frederick were leading the charge. Injuries to Smith and the retirement of Frederick have caused Dallas to dip a bit when it comes to the better offensive line units across the league.

There’s been a drop-off, but per Pro Football Focus, the Cowboys offensive line still ranks among the best as they came in as the 10th-ranked unit of its kind in the NFL.

10. Dallas Cowboys

Although the Cowboys’ offensive line had been among the five best units in the league for years, that position is in jeopardy going forward. The Cowboys let left tackle Tyron Smith and center Tyler Biadasz walk in free agency, and now rookie left tackle Tyler Guyton is set to replace Smith while Brock Hoffman is expected to play center.

It did not help Dallas that right tackle Terence Steele had a disappointing 2023 season coming back from injury. The team still has one of the better guard duos in Tyler Smith and Zack Martin, but it is unknown how much quality is around them.

The part about Brock Hoffman starting at center isn’t edged in stone yet, though. Rookie Cooper Beebe will have a lot to say about that with his raw power and technique. Hoffman will have the advantage from an experience standpoint, but Beebe has a higher ceiling when it comes to talent, making it one of the most intriguing training camp battles.

Guyton is tasked with being the next top guy at left tackle. He has to get better at some things, but Guyton’s strength and athleticism at 6’8 and 322 pounds give him a perfect base to be coached up and developed. Steele wasn’t horrible by any means in 2023, but he’ll certainly need to take it back up a notch to where he was a few years ago when he looked like one of the better right tackles in the league.

The question marks are there on the Cowboys offensive line, but there’s also plenty of talent and upside. Getting Guyton up to speed and Steele back to form are key, and if that does happen in 2024, the Cowboys will have a shot to control the line of scrimmage and keep their defense fresh, which has worked wonders over the last few years when that’s been the case.

KANSAS CITY, KANSAS — Forward Petar Musa scored his 11th regular season goal, equalizing the match at 2-2 in the 64th minute. However, FC Dallas (6-11-5, 23 points) suffered a 3-2 defeat to Sporting Kansas City (5-13-5, 20 points) on Sunday night at Children’s Mercy Park.

FC Dallas Interim head coach Peter Luccin expressed his thoughts on the team’s performance: “With all the rotations that we did, I think we started well in the first 15 minutes. Then after that, we changed a bit in terms of our energy, our press was different, and we became passive. So that’s why they started having the ball and scored those goals.” Luccin highlighted the need for more consistency in their press without the ball during the first half and mentioned that the team created many chances in the second half but continued to concede too many goals.

The match ended with Luccin noting, “We could have won that game but at least we should have tied that game, so that’s why I’m not so happy about the result. There were good things about the game, we created good sequences and played good football but that’s not enough. We need more for Wednesday.”

The two teams are set for a quarterfinal rematch on Wednesday night in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, offering a chance for FC Dallas to redeem themselves.

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott enjoys vacation with his family weeks after sexual assault lawsuit is dropped

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is enjoying some time off as he prepares for another NFL season.

Prescott was seen at a private airport in Mexico with his family as he enjoys his vacation to Cabo.

He was seen without a walking boot on after he reportedly injured his ankle.

Just days ago, he was seen walking in some protective footwear but these recent photos seem to show that isn’t needed anymore.

It’s been a long offseason for Prescott, who recently saw a sexual assault lawsuit that was filed against him dismissed.

According to online court records, a Judge Angela Tucker in Colin County, Texas tossed the suit at the end of last month.

The judge has also set a hearing on September 13 of this year to determine if any further sanctions should be levied against Prescott’s accuser, Victoria Shores, and her legal team.

Levi McCathern, the attorney for Prescott, released a statement in the aftermath of the decision.

‘Despite Ms. Shores and her legal team’s relentless efforts to extort money and damage Dak’s reputation,’ McCathern said, ‘justice has consistently prevailed and will continue to do so.’

‘The original lies by Ms. Shores, her team, and their recent failed attempt to sue him civilly are all just a continuation of their extortion plot against Dak.

‘These ploys distract from the trauma of legitimate sexual assault survivors and undermine the progress that our society has made in supporting them.

‘We are proud that Dak stands up against this injustice and thankful Judge Tucker agrees’.
