President Joe Biden, many others expected to honor Eddie Bernice Johnson today in Dallas

North Texans on Monday will begin celebrating the life of former Dallas Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, including a wake and prayer service at Concord Church that President Joe Biden plans to attend.

Johnson’s body will lie in state at Fair Park’s Hall of State from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by a procession to Dallas’ Concord Church for the wake and prayer service from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Johnson’s funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, 10 a.m. at Concord. On Wednesday she’ll be buried in Austin at Texas State Cemetery.

Numerous dignitaries are expected to attend the services memorializing Johnson.

A trailblazing public servant and the first registered nurse elected to Congress, Johnson died December 31 due to a post-surgery infection.

Before serving in public office, Johnson was a civil rights activist with a thriving nursing career. She was the first Black person to serve as chief psychiatric nurse at Dallas’ VA hospital.

Her 50-year career in electoral politics included stints in the Texas House and Senate, where she broke barriers often faced by women and minorities. Johnson was the first Black person to serve in the Texas Senate since Reconstruction.

Elected to the Dallas-anchored District 30 in 1992, Johnson focused much of her attention on delivering resources to North Texas, particularly for transportation, infrastructure and flood control projects. She promoted science, technology, engineering and math education and shepherded major funding for science and technology, including NASA. Johnson was instrumental in securing tens of billions of dollars to revive the U.S. semiconductor chip industry.

The once-segregated Union Station in downtown Dallas bears her name, as does the Eddie Bernice Johnson Stem Academy in Wilmer.

“She gave Dallas all she had,” said her son, Kirk Johnson.

The circumstances behind Johnson’s death are controversial.

Her family intends to bring a lawsuit against Baylor Scott & White Health System, alleging negligent care at the hospital’s rehabilitation center led to her death. After back surgery, Johnson was sent to Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation. In September Kirk Johnson said he found his mother alone and in pain. A news release announcing the family’s intention to bring a lawsuit states she was “lying in her own feces and urine,” which they contend led to the lumbar spine infection that killed her.

In a statement last week Baylor Scott & White said: “We are committed to working directly with the Congresswoman’s family members and their counsel. Out of respect for patient privacy, we must limit our comments.”

North Texas doughnut shops named among best in U.S.

Jarams will always be top in our hearts.

Arguments about the best doughnut shops can get heated. We have our own personal top 10 favorites. And we have issues with DoorDash’s list below. So, let’s dive right into this sweet, round confection with a hole in the middle.

For National Donut Day, which is Friday, June 5, for all those who celebrate, DoorDash has a roundup of the top 100-rated small and medium-sized donut shops on DoorDash. The list includes local businesses across 86 cities and 25 states.

To be considered for the Donut Day Dozens list, the bakery must be small or medium-sized, have fewer than 10 stores, and have at least 1,000 reviews. The shops with the highest average consumer ratings from April 2025 to April 2026 were chosen.

Of the 21 donut shops chosen across Texas, 13 are located in North Texas.

A few misses

There are some obvious big misses here. Like La Rue in Trinity Groves, which apparently was left off because it has fewer than 1,000 reviews. We awarded this chef-driven shop Best Doughnuts in 2025 for pushing out top-tier confections every morning and a seasonal menu that will both win you over and break your heart. They’re also using only beef tallow in the fryers now.

And no Jarams? The shop on Preston Road has a 4.7 average rating on DoorDash, and it appears 4.8 was the cutoff. The family-owned Jarams is one of the best shops in Dallas.

As is Detour Donuts in Frisco. This is run by an ambitious young baker who draws long lines for themed doughnuts and a rotating menu.

Beyond North Texas …

The rest of the awarded donut shops were mostly located in Houston, with a sprinkle in San Antonio. Shops were listed in alphabetical order, and not with any sort of numbered ranking system.

  • Best Donuts – Humble, TX
  • Southern Maid Donuts – Humble, TX
  • DAWN DONUTS – League City, TX
  • Max Donuts – Houston, TX
  • Nom Donuts – Houston, TX
  • Snowflake donuts – Houston, TX
  • ST Donuts – San Antonio, TX
  • Mom’s Donut Shop – Gainesville, TX
  • The Donut Palace – Lufkin, TX
