Rookie halfback Bucky Irving has worked his way into the Bucs’ game plan, and the offense chewed up Philadelphia with 445 yards in a 33-16 victory last week after beating Super Bowl contender Detroit two weeks before.
The Falcons could consider this a mini-revenge game. Tampa Bay beat them 29-25 on Mayfield’s touchdowns pass with 31 seconds remaining in Week 14 last season, a victory that pushed the Bucs toward the division title and significantly hurt Atlanta’s chances.
The Falcons acquired Kirk Cousins to correct a sluggish offense, but he has yet to throw for as many as 250 yards his four starts.

This is an intriguing matchup on several levels. Pittsburgh has jumped to the AFC North lead by using coach Mike Tomlin’s old-school approach — run the ball and play defense. Steelers’ opponents are averaging only 261.3 yards and 13.3 points per game, both in the top four in the league.

At the same time, this is the most explosive offense the Steelers have faced, although the Cowboys with quarterback Prescott are quite one-sided. Prescott averages 268 passing yards per game, but the Cowboys’ running game has been non-existent. The defense has not been any better. Dallas ranks No. 26 in total defense and No. 27 in rushing defense.

Justin Fields, who became the Steelers’ starting quarterback when Russell Wilson was injured before the opener, has accounted for six touchdowns — three rushing and three passing. Baltimore attempted only 12 passes in a 28-25 victory over Dallas two weeks ago. This game looks to have a similar feel.

Nashville-born Hattie B’s Hot Chicken would like to reintroduce itself to Dallas.
Hattie B’s owners closed the first-in-Texas restaurant in Deep Ellum in early August 2024 after two and a half years. It’s now back open in another part of Dallas, near Oak Lawn and Lemmon avenues, as of Oct. 2, 2024.

The former IHOP — pitched roof and all — has been splashed in Hattie B’s signature fire-engine red, with diner-style black and white tiles inside.
“It’s a nod to those classic Americana chicken and burger joints,” said Hattie B’s creative director Michael Carpenter in a statement.

Hattie B’s is known for its hot chicken laced with cayenne. The Classic Fried Chicken Sandwich comes with the option of adding American cheese or bacon pimento cheese. Purists might opt for a half bird (breast, thigh, leg and wing) with sides like crinkle-cut fries, black-eyed pea salad or bacon cheddar grits.

The Nashville-based restaurant developed international acclaim a decade ago when Bizarre Foods America and Food & Wine took notice of the family-owned restaurant. Since then, Hattie B’s has expanded its reach from Nashville to Atlanta, Memphis, Austin and even Las Vegas.
Hattie B’s entry into Texas was a calculated effort for co-founder Nick Bishop Jr., who saw the potential for his family’s Nashville business to reach across the United States.
Bishop said he loves the Lemmon Avenue location’s on-site parking — noteworthy, because parking can be a struggle in Deep Ellum.
“Guests will experience the same delicious hot chicken, cold beers and great tunes they’ve come to expect at Hattie B’s,” Bishop said in a statement.
Hattie B’s is at 3827 Lemmon Ave., Dallas, and is open for lunch, dinner and late-night seven days a week. It opened Oct. 2, 2024.

Short-term rentals are back in the news, with high program costs, serious enforcement struggles and declining hotel occupancy tax revenue for the city. Is anyone surprised?
In June 2023, the Dallas City Council passed a ban on short-term rentals in single-family neighborhoods, potentially putting more than 90% of all Dallas STRs out of business. That action was met with a lawsuit, subsequent injunction and appeal by the city. Meanwhile, STRs continue operating. What went wrong on our way to eliminating the few nuisance STRs that are out there?
The City Council approved a ban that was not supported by factual data nor by city staff. City-provided data in a 2021 report titled, “Short-Term Rental Data Analysis: An Analysis of the Impact of Short-term Rental Properties in the City of Dallas,” and two subsequent reports titled “Short Term Rental Impact Analysis Updates” show that 80% of short-term rentals have zero 311 or 911 calls, that “nuisance STRs are outliers” and that there is “no evidence of a city-wide impact”. City staff testified at City Council meetings against the ban.
Years of STR task forces had already produced a fair and sensible registration ordinance including full funding of the registration program for night and weekend enforcement by STR owners, and serious consequences for nuisance properties. We were on our way to addressing real issues.

But it didn’t last. Opponents of STRs are a vocal minority. Many also oppose ForwardDallas 2.0 and other city policy initiatives that would improve quality of life and affordability. They won the day in June 2023, but what did their advocacy accomplish?
It cost Dallas taxpayers $1.3 million to set up the STR code compliance program and it continues to cost them $650,000 annually to run it, according to testimony from Code Compliance Services Director Christopher Christian. Plus, there’s the cost of the lawsuit. Yet enforcement is no better than before the ban.
The number of STRs has increased slightly over the last year from 3,250 to 3,512, according to city staff briefings, but hotel occupancy tax revenue has dropped from $3.8 million last year to $2.7 million through this July.

How do we get things back on track? The ban is obviously not working. Dallas should get rid of it. Reinstate the original registration ordinance without amendments and negotiate agreements with STR platforms for direct collection of hotel occupancy taxes.
Short-term rentals aren’t going away. They are the preferred hospitality choice for travelers seeking an affordable, authentic experience. The FIFA World Cup is coming to Dallas in 2026. Where will guests stay while they generate millions of dollars of income for our city?
A small but vocal minority of naysayers should not be allowed to dictate city policy. Dallas has always been welcoming of entrepreneurs and diversity. Let’s get back to some fair and easy-to-enforce rules so we can get the few bad apples in line and allow the 80% of responsible STR owners to continue.
