Suspected stalker follows Atlanta family onto plane at DC airport
Mother describes security scare on Delta flight
A security scare on a Delta Air Lines flight had an Atlanta-area mother and her family terrified. Officials confirm a man was able to make it onto an Atlanta-bound plane at Washington Dulles International Airport without a boarding pass for that flight.
ATLANTA – The end of a family trip to the nation’s Capitol took a terrifying turn on August 4 when Lauren Benton and her family showed up for their Delta Air Lines flight at Washington Dulles International Airport, that is when she says a man got too close for comfort.
“I would go so far as to say stalking us,” she said.
Benton said they noticed the man after going through security. She says he followed the family of four to a seating area and at one point joined Benton and one of her young daughters in the women’s restroom.
“My heart was racing, and my immediate attention was drawn to my children,” Benton said. “Where are they? And I need to keep them close to me now.”
Eventually, they went to board their Delta flight home to Atlanta, but that is when the situation got worse. The man followed them onto the flight and sat right next to them.
“I was just questioning his intentions the entire time and I know that child trafficking is absolutely a growing problem here in the United States and so that was the first thing that came to mind,” Benton said.
She says she reported him to a flight attendant, and eventually he was removed because he should not have been on board. Officials confirmed the passenger had a ticket, just not on that Delta flight.
Airport officials say the passenger was not charged.

The airline tells FOX 5 it is investigating. In a statement it said, “Delta has processes in place for gate agents and flight crews to verify that individuals onboard aircraft prior to departure are customers that are booked on that particular flight. Delta is reviewing the matter in question internally and has been in touch with airport authorities in conjunction with this review.”
“I was shocked and felt nauseous, I could not believe the magnitude of the safety breach,” Benton said.
Benton says her sense of safety at the airport was shattered. She hopes others take note of this situation.
“If your gut is giving you the sense that something is off and wrong, don’t be afraid to speak up,” she said.
Benton says her young daughters are scared after this. She says she is frustrated with the lack of response here and says Delta needs to do more.

High E. coli levels along Chattahoochee River force business closures after days of rain
Elevated E. coli levels along parts of the Chattahoochee River are forcing some businesses to temporarily shut down operations as officials continue monitoring unsafe water conditions following days of heavy rain.
The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper says spikes in bacteria levels after storms are common, but experts say the duration of the current contamination event is unusual.
“Typically we have a 24-hour period after a rain event where the river might look a little brown and have some elevated levels,” said Britt Oxford, general manager of Atlanta operations for Nantahala Outdoor Center. “But right now, with continuous rain for almost five days now, it’s just kind of held on and staying elevated.”
Oxford said prolonged rain combined with ongoing drought conditions have contributed to the lingering contamination, adding that he hasn’t seen levels stay elevated this long since Hurricane Helene.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey measured E. coli levels as high as 2,500. Water is generally considered unsafe for recreation when levels exceed 235.
The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper says elevated bacteria levels have stretched across parts of Fulton, Cobb, Forsyth and Gwinnett counties, impacting an estimated 20 businesses along the river.
Health experts warn that exposure to contaminated water can cause symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea and infections.
Despite the warnings, some people were still spotted near the river Wednesday.
“I mean, we’re pretty much in the summer weather and I know I’ve seen folks near the water wanting to go fish, treat it like a beach or a pool,” said Annabelle Ombac, who was hiking near Nantahala Outdoor Center’s Powers Island outpost.
Oxford said the prolonged contamination is affecting both businesses and longtime Atlanta traditions centered around the river.
“The thing that’s heartbreaking for me is we are the gateway for people to access the river,” Oxford said. “They’re not able to access the river. And it’s kind of a tradition a lot of people have in the city.”
Josh Schulman, who was running along the river Wednesday, said access to the Chattahoochee is one of the metro area’s defining features.
“Having the Chattahoochee here is a treat,” Schulman said. “It’s a gift to be able to have this as part of a major metro area.”
Oxford said river conditions should improve roughly a day after the rain clears, but until then, businesses will continue monitoring water quality and adjusting operations accordingly.

Missing East Point man’s family pleads for answers as police search enters 4th week
An East Point family is pleading for answers nearly a month after a 20-year-old man disappeared after visiting a local Target store.
According to East Point police, Derek Samuel was last seen April 29 at the Target on Marketplace Boulevard before he walked out of the store and vanished.
Family members said Samuel had been driven to the store by friends. Investigators later located his cell phone in a wooded area behind the shopping center, though police have not publicly identified any suspects in the case.
Samuel’s mother, Nishae Samuel, described her son as cheerful, outgoing and someone who always tried to make others laugh.
“He’s goofy. He’s always smiling, he’s always happy,” she said. “I’ve never really seen my kid sad for real, you know, or upset.”
The family says Samuel dreamed of starting his own clothing line and enjoyed gaming and spending time with friends. Surveillance footage reportedly captured him leaving the East Point Target and walking toward Commerce Drive before disappearing.
His mother said the disappearance has taken a heavy emotional toll on Samuel’s siblings, including his twin sister.
“They’re staying strong in this. We’re praying together, we’re trusting God’s plan in this,” she said.
The family is also asking people to avoid spreading misinformation about the case online and instead contact investigators directly with credible tips.
“I just want them to understand that we do need our privacy at this point in time,” Samuel said. “If they do have any information pertaining to my son, just contact East Point Police.”
Police say a $15,000 reward is being offered for information that helps investigators in the case.
