New York Gov. Hochul orders flags to be raised for Trump's inauguration amid mourning period for Jimmy Carter

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, has ordered flags in the state to fly at full-staff on Monday for the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump as the nation remains in a mourning period to honor former President Jimmy Carter.
“Tomorrow, we are all Americans as we observe the centuries-old traditions of Inauguration Day,” Hochul said in a statement to the New York Post on Sunday.
“For that reason, I am directing flags to fly at full staff throughout the State of New York on January 20 and return to half staff to honor the late President Carter on January 21,” she added. “Regardless of your political views, the American tradition of the peaceful transition of power is something to celebrate.”
The governor’s directive comes during President Biden’s order that flags at all government and public buildings and grounds across the country fly at half-staff for a 30-day mourning period following Carter’s death on Dec. 29, 2024, which happens to include Inauguration Day.

Biden said the U.S. flag “should be displayed at half-staff at the White House and on all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions.”
It is a tradition when a former president dies to order a 30-day mourning period and for flags to be displayed at half-staff.
Hochul joins a trio of Democratic governors — California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis and Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson — in ordering flags to fly at full-staff for Trump’s inauguration before the mourning period ends on Jan. 28.

Several Republican governors have also directed flags to be raised on Monday, including Idaho Gov. Brad Little, North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin.
Nearly 30 states will raise their flags on Monday for Trump’s inauguration, as will flags at the U.S. Capitol following an order from House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Trump had publicly taken issue with the idea that flags could be displayed at half-staff for his inauguration following Carter’s death.

“The Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at ‘half mast’ during my Inauguration,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Jan. 3. “They think it’s so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our Country, they only think about themselves.”
“Look at what they’ve done to our once GREAT America over the past four years – It’s a total mess! In any event, because of the death of President Jimmy Carter, the Flag may, for the first time ever during an Inauguration of a future President, be at half mast,” he continued. “Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Flags were flown at half-staff when former President Nixon was sworn-in for his second term in 1973 after Nixon ordered the flags to be lowered following the death of former President Truman.

Aaron Rodgers wife revealed: NFL legend reveals marriage on day one of pre-season with Pittsburg Steelers | The Express Tribune

Aaron Rodgers marked his first day with the Pittsburgh Steelers by revealing a surprising personal update: he secretly married earlier this year.
Rodgers, 41, who signed a one-year contract with the Steelers after a turbulent season with the New York Jets, wore a black band on his wedding ring finger during his contract signing last Saturday.
The revelation came during a Tuesday press conference, following his first day of training at the Steelers’ mandatory mini-camp.
“Yeah, it’s a wedding ring,” Rodgers confirmed when asked about the ring. When pressed further on how long he had been married, he replied, “It’s been a couple of months.”
The four-time NFL MVP and 2011 Super Bowl champion had spent months contemplating his future before deciding to join Pittsburgh. His move came after being released by the Jets, following a second season that fell short of expectations.
Rodgers, a free agent for the first time in his 20-year career, had visited the Steelers and was also reportedly considering an offer from the New York Giants.
Before making his decision, Rodgers had kept his options open, even hinting at the possibility of retirement.
However, speaking on Tuesday, Rodgers explained that personal matters had delayed his decision to sign with Pittsburgh. “I was dealing with a lot of things in my personal life,” he said. “Some things improved a little bit, where I felt like I could fully be all in here with the guys.”
Rodgers, who spent 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers before joining the Jets, has kept his personal life relatively private. He did not elaborate on the identity of his wife but has previously spoken about his relationship with a woman named Brittani.
He had mentioned her in public interviews last December and April, confirming he was in a serious relationship.
Despite his high-profile career, Rodgers had never been married before, making this announcement all the more unexpected.
When asked about his decision to join the Steelers, Rodgers credited head coach Mike Tomlin for much of his decision. “It starts with Mike Tomlin. I’ve been a fan of his for a long time,” Rodgers said.
“The rapport that fell in between me and Mike made it to where, as I was going through my personal stuff, that there wasn’t any other option for me. It was here or not play.”
Tomlin, who has led the Steelers since 2007 and has never had a losing season, played a significant role in Rodgers’ choice.
The quarterback also expressed his desire to bring a Super Bowl title to Pittsburgh, calling it “a seventh championship for the city” — a fitting goal for a team with a storied history.
Rodgers, who has won MVP four times, acknowledged the continued drive to win a second Super Bowl.
“I have a lot that motivates me, but this is about the love for the game — a game that has given me so much over the years,” he said.
Rodgers’ first day with the Steelers marked not only a fresh start in his NFL career but also a new chapter in his personal life, leaving fans eagerly awaiting his performance in the upcoming season.

Inside Bethenny Frankel’s $7.8M Sale of Applejack Farm in Connecticut

Bethenny Frankel has sold her Connecticut home, also known as Applejack Farm, for more than $7.8 million.
The estate, which is located in Greenwich, Connecticut, closed for $7,825,000. The sale was represented by Jeff Jackson, a broker and owner of Corcoran Centric Realty. Martha Z. Jeffrey and Anne Z. Ogilvy of Sotheby’s International Realty represented the buyer.
Applejack Farm is located in a gated area of the Golden Triangle neighborhood, just minutes outside of Greenwich. Frankel, 54, originally purchased Applejack Farm for $4,250,000 in 2021.
The home was first built in 1743 and is considered to be one of the oldest homes in Greenwich. Over the years, the Real Housewives of New York City alum renovated and added on to the property, ultimately increasing its value.
The property boasts five bedrooms, six bathrooms, two half bathrooms, grand historic rooms, a La Cornue-equipped kitchen, a primary suite with dual spa-grade bathrooms, a lower level with a media room, entertainer’s bar, gym and more. The estate also features a guest cottage that includes two bedrooms, two and half bathrooms, a three-bay garage, a standalone studio and a party barn.
Across its buildings, Applejack Farm has numerous architectural details, including beamed ceilings, brick fireplaces, paneled walls, ornate moldings, an antique bar and more.
The grounds of Applejack Farm included a wide array of trees and rolling green lawns. The plush landscape is accentuated with intricate lighting, a luxe stone patio, a storage shed and a covered porch overlooking the stunning view.
Back in April, Frankel announced that she was migrating south to the Sunshine State.
“I am moving to Florida for personal and professional reasons,” she explained in an Instagram video. “Something has arisen that made this the best and healthiest for myself and my daughter.”
That same month, she quietly placed her Connecticut home up for sale for $8 million.
Before making her relocation official, Frankel reportedly purchased a condo in Miami, which serves as her secondary Florida home. She bought the property for about $1.7 million in June 2024.
After settling in, Frankel gave fans an inside look to her home and new life in the Sunshine State.
“The transition and journey has been rough but in a few weeks we will be settled into our Florida home before we head to the Hamptons for an endless summer,” she wrote via Instagram in May alongside moments of her time in Miami so far. “Let the adventure era continue.”

Father and daughter who died on Maine mountain remembered as 'full of life, full of joy'

Local News
“Both wonderful people, full of life, full of joy.”
The father and daughter who died hiking on Mount Katahdin in Maine earlier this month are being remembered by their loved ones for being “full of life” and “full of joy.”
The bodies of Tim Keiderling, 58, and his daughter, 28-year-old Ester Keiderling, both of Ulster Park, New York, were found near the summit of Mount Katahdin on June 3 and 4, respectively. Park rangers began searching for the father and daughter June 2 after finding their car still in the Baxter State Park day-use parking lot.
Tim Keiderling’s body was found following a massive search on Tuesday, with searchers locating Ester Keiderling’s remains a day later.
Heinrich Arnold, Tim Keiderling’s brother-in-law, said in a statement on Facebook that the father and daughter encountered “terrible” weather, which they succumbed to overnight.
“They were doing a day hike, a bucket list thing, to climb this amazing mountain,” he said. “Both wonderful people, full of life, full of joy.”
According to the obituary for the father and daughter, both were members of the Bruderhof religious group, an international Christian community focused on communal living.
In the obituary, loved ones wrote that Tim Keiderling was “an avid outdoorsman” who “loved bee-keeping, camping, and hiking” and worked in his community as an elementary school teacher, financial administrator, and traveling salesman.
“As a teacher, he will be remembered most for his infectious energy, his patient kindness, and his ability to pull together the most rambunctious groups of children,” the obituary reads. “He was at his best when teaching world history and geography, leading hikes through the fields and woods of the Hudson Valley, and spinning yarns around the campfire.”
Esther Keiderling and her father were close, according to their loved ones. She is being remembered for being “a sensitive, deeply-thinking woman who loved reading and writing, with a particular interest in the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins and Edna St. Vincent Millay.”
“Her friends remember with great fondness how attentive she was to the needs of those around her, noticing when someone needed a word of encouragement or a small gift of some kind,” the obituary reads. “Such gifts often included her own heartfelt poetry.”
According to their loved ones, what drew both father and daughter to hiking up to great heights was “always the view.”
“The broad expanse of God’s handiwork, laid out below them,” relatives wrote in the obituary. “The unbearable tragedy of their passing aside, it is perhaps fitting that they went Home from a mountain top: a place of danger and solitude, but also, a place close to God.”
Tim Keiderling is survived by his wife of 31 years, Annemarie, three other daughters, two sons, and two granddaughters, according to the obituary. Funeral services were held Sunday for the father and daughter in Rifton, New York.
