AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) – As we look at our school systems each day, there are so many parts that contribute to the well-being of our children’s future.

Whether it’s a teacher, a coach, or a school nurse, every individual at a school helps shape the minds of our kids.

That’s why the week of Feb. 5-9, students, staff, and parents are giving extra thanks to school counselors.

Gov. Janet Mills officially proclaimed Feb. 5-9 as School Counselor Week across the state.

It’s a time to send a special thanks to the thousands of school counselors in Maine for all the work they do.

We spoke with the chair of the Maine School Counselor Association to hear why it’s important to acknowledge this essential role.

“School counselors really work to support the whole child and families,” said Scott Harris, chair of Maine School Counselor Association. “It’s a big team effort, and I think we are one of the ways that really helps to bridge a lot of the different areas of the school with teachers, students, families, administration.”

Usually, a school counselor is the first on scene when it comes to responding to emergencies.

Harris also emphasized it’s important for school counselors to lend an ear to each other.

With current events, it’s important to make sure our counselors also have access to resources to assist them.
